Chapter 9: The Locker That Held a Twenty-Year Secret

Daniel stared at the photograph.

For several seconds, he couldn't breathe.

The woman sitting in the café looked older, thinner, and more fragile than the woman in his father's photograph.

But there was no mistaking her.

It was Rebecca Hayes.

“She's alive,” Margaret whispered.

Daniel looked at Julia.

“Where was this taken?””

Julia enlarged the photograph.

A sign above the café entrance showed the name of a small town approximately forty miles away.

Michael leaned closer.

“That's the Willow Café. It's on Route 18.””

Daniel reached for his keys.

Julia stopped him.

“Don't go alone.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“We need to involve Detective Harris.””

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

Within twenty minutes, the detective had arranged for two officers to accompany them.

Eleanor Price joined them at the storage facility.

She was a woman in her late sixties, with short white hair and a calm manner that made her seem impossible to intimidate.

When she saw the photograph of Rebecca, her expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“An anonymous message,” Daniel replied.

Eleanor studied it carefully.

Then she whispered:

“She looks exactly the same.””

Daniel frowned.

“You've seen her recently?””

Eleanor looked toward the storage lockers.

“Not recently. But I never believed she was dead.””

They entered the facility.

The hallway smelled of concrete and industrial cleaning products. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead.

Locker 214 was at the end of the corridor.

Daniel inserted the key from his father's document case.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a metal cabinet.

Eleanor opened it using a second key.

Several sealed folders were arranged on the shelves.

There were financial records, photographs, old newspaper clippings, and a small cassette recorder.

Daniel picked up the first folder.

The label read:

*HAYES DEVELOPMENT — ORIGINAL TRANSACTION RECORDS.*

Julia began examining the contents.

Michael opened another folder.

“Daniel, look at this.””

It contained property transfer documents dating back twenty years.

Several properties had been transferred from Bennett Heritage Holdings into companies controlled by Robert Hayes.

The transactions were signed by people who had never been directors of the original company.

One signature belonged to Rebecca.

Another belonged to Thomas.

Daniel stared at his father's signature.

It was a perfect copy.

But the date was impossible.

His father had died two days before the document was supposedly signed.

“That's forgery,” Julia said.

Michael nodded.

“And it explains why Robert wanted the original documents destroyed.””

Eleanor reached into the cabinet and removed a small envelope.

“Your father left this for you.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Daniel, if you have found this, then someone has finally tried to take what I spent my life protecting.

Do not trust the person who tells you that Rebecca abandoned us.

She was trying to save your family.

Daniel read the words twice.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“Where is the recording?””

She pointed toward the cassette recorder.

Daniel pressed the play button.

A burst of static filled the small room.

Then his father's voice emerged.

Older recordings always sounded different. Softer. Less polished.

But Daniel recognized it immediately.

“Robert, you can't transfer those properties without the board's approval.””

Another voice answered.

Robert Hayes.

“Thomas, the board is not going to question a transaction they never see.””

“You're stealing from the company.””

“I'm moving assets.””

“Into your own companies.””

A chair scraped.

Then Robert spoke again.

“You have a family to think about.””

“My family has nothing to do with this.””

“Your son has a future. Think carefully before you destroy it.””

Thomas's voice became harder.

“Don't threaten my boy.””

“I am trying to help you.””

“Then explain Rebecca's signature.””

Silence.

Then Robert said something that made Daniel's skin crawl.

“Rebecca should have stayed out of it.””

The recording continued.

Thomas accused Robert of forging financial documents.

Robert denied everything.

Then the conversation changed.

A woman's voice entered.

Rebecca.

“You told me the money was being invested in legitimate properties.””

Robert responded angrily.

“You don't understand the business.””

“I understand that you used my signature.””

“You signed what I gave you.””

“I never signed those transfers.””

There was a loud bang.

Then Thomas shouted:

“Robert, leave her alone!””

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at the machine.

His father had been confronting Robert.

Rebecca had been there.

And something had happened after that conversation.

Eleanor opened another folder.

“This contains the original witness statements.””

Julia began reading.

Then she stopped.

“Daniel, you need to see this.””

The document was a letter from Rebecca, dated three days before she disappeared.

It was addressed to Thomas Bennett.

Thomas,

I have found evidence that Robert has been moving money through several private accounts. He believes I know nothing about the second arrangement, but I have copies of the original transfers.

I am afraid he knows I have them.

If anything happens to me, please make sure Daniel never becomes dependent on Robert.

He will try to use the boy.

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

The letter ended with a handwritten sentence.

There is someone inside the company helping him. I don't know whether I can trust anyone anymore.

Julia looked up.

“Do we know who the person was?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“Your father never found out.””

Daniel looked at the documents again.

“Then why was my father killed?””

Nobody answered.

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to be careful with that conclusion. These recordings and documents establish suspicious conduct, but they don't establish murder.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

But he couldn't shake the thought.

His father had died two days after confronting Robert.

Rebecca had disappeared three months earlier.

And the official records had been altered afterward.

Michael was still examining the documents when his laptop chimed.

He looked down.

“Daniel?””

“What?””

“I found a transfer from the original trust.””

Daniel turned.

“What transfer?””

Michael showed him a bank record.

Twenty years ago, shortly after Thomas's death, $400,000 had been moved from one of the original company accounts into a private account.

The account holder was listed as:

*Patricia Whitmore.*

Daniel stared.

“Lauren's mother?””

Michael nodded.

Eleanor looked alarmed.

“That account shouldn't have existed.””

Julia took the document.

“Do you recognize the bank?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes. It was a temporary holding account. But it was never supposed to receive company funds.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Why would Patricia have received four hundred thousand dollars?””

Michael opened another document.

The transfer had been approved by a company director.

The signature was Robert Hayes.

Daniel looked at the date.

It was six weeks after his father's death.

The same period when Margaret had been struggling to keep the family home.

The same period when Robert had offered to help manage the estate.

“Patricia has been connected to Robert for twenty years,” Daniel said.

Eleanor looked troubled.

“Possibly longer.””

Daniel turned toward the detective.

“I need to speak with Patricia.””

Detective Harris shook his head.

“Not until we verify the records.””

Daniel looked at the photograph of Rebecca again.

“Then I need to find her.””

Eleanor quietly placed a small card in his hand.

“Your father gave me this address shortly before he died. He said Rebecca might eventually use it.””

Daniel looked down.

It was a residential address in the same town as the café.

“Why didn't you give this to me earlier?””

“Because I needed to know whether you were truly ready to hear the truth.””

Daniel slipped the card into his pocket.

Before anyone could leave, a noise echoed from the hallway.

A heavy metal door slammed.

Detective Harris immediately turned.

“Stay here.””

He moved toward the entrance with the second officer.

Daniel followed at a distance.

The hallway was empty.

But the outer door stood open.

Someone had entered the storage facility.

Someone had known exactly which locker they were opening.

Michael returned carrying a small object.

“Daniel, I found this outside the locker.””

It was a black USB drive.

A piece of white tape had been wrapped around it.

Written in blue ink were two words.

*FOR DANIEL.*

Julia immediately warned him not to insert it into his laptop.

Michael examined it using a secure device.

A single video file appeared.

The date was twenty years old.

Daniel pressed play.

The screen showed a woman sitting in a dimly lit room.

Her face was partially hidden by shadows.

Then she leaned toward the camera.

It was Rebecca.

“My name is Rebecca Hayes,” she said.

“If Daniel Bennett is watching this, then Thomas was right. Robert has finally come for the boy.””

She paused, looking directly into the camera.

“I need you to understand something. Your father didn't die because of a heart attack.””

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

Rebecca continued.

“He was murdered because he discovered what Robert had done.””

Margaret gasped.

The recording flickered.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“And the person who helped Robert arrange it wasn't a stranger.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It was someone Thomas trusted like a brother.””

The screen went black.

Daniel stood frozen.

Then the video automatically resumed.

Rebecca appeared again, holding a photograph.

She turned it toward the camera.

It showed Thomas Bennett standing beside Robert Hayes.

But there was another man in the background.

A younger man wearing a police uniform.

Rebecca whispered his name.

“Detective Samuel Harris.””

Daniel slowly turned toward the doorway.

The detective who had been investigating the financial fraud was standing behind him.

May you like

And he was staring at the screen.

For the first time since Daniel had met him, Detective Harris looked terrified.
