Chapter 7: The Photographer Who Knew Too Much

Daniel recognized the man behind the camera immediately.

His name was Victor Lane.

He had photographed the engagement party, the rehearsal dinner, and the wedding ceremony. Lauren had personally selected him, insisting that nobody else could capture the occasion properly.

Now he was sitting inside a black sedan across the street from the abandoned Bennett office, photographing Daniel's mother.

“Mom, get away from the window,” Daniel said.

Margaret turned.

“What is it?””

“Someone's watching us.””

Michael moved toward the glass and carefully pulled the curtain aside.

The sedan's engine suddenly roared.

“That's Victor Lane,” Daniel said.

Julia looked up.

“The wedding photographer?””

“Yes.””

“Are you certain?””

Daniel nodded.

“I've seen him almost every weekend for six months.””

Michael reached for his phone.

“I'll get the license plate.””

But the sedan was already moving.

It accelerated through the intersection, disappearing behind a delivery truck.

Daniel rushed downstairs.

By the time he reached the street, the vehicle had vanished.

He stood beneath the flickering streetlight, looking at the empty road.

His phone vibrated.

A photograph had arrived from an unknown number.

It showed Margaret standing inside the office.

The picture had been taken through the window.

Beneath it was a message.

*Your father should have kept his secrets buried.*

Daniel immediately showed it to Julia.

Her expression hardened.

“Don't respond.””

“Someone is threatening my mother.””

“I know. That's why we're going to the police.””

Michael stepped outside.

“I managed to get half the license plate.””

“Good,” Julia said.

“Send it to Detective Harris.””

Daniel looked back toward the building.

“Why would a wedding photographer be involved in this?””

Julia answered carefully.

“Because he might not be a photographer.””

They returned upstairs and examined the original wedding contract.

Victor's company was listed as Lane Visual Productions.

The business address was a small office in another part of town.

Michael searched the company registration.

“It's registered to Victor Lane,” he said.

“But there's something strange.””

“What?””

“The company has received payments from three different businesses connected to Hayes Capital Partners.””

Daniel leaned over his shoulder.

“How much?””

Michael scrolled.

“Approximately $62,000 over fourteen months.””

Margaret looked bewildered.

“Why would Robert pay a photographer?””

Michael clicked another file.

“Because Victor isn't just taking photographs.””

The payment descriptions were revealing.

Surveillance services.

Background verification.

Personal documentation.

Daniel felt his jaw tighten.

“He was following me.””

“Probably,” Michael said.

Julia photographed the records.

“Let's not assume we understand the entire arrangement yet. We need evidence that can be verified.””

Daniel's phone rang.

Detective Harris.

“Mr. Bennett, we received your complaint about the threatening message.””

“Have you identified the vehicle?””

“We're checking the registration details.””

“I have reason to believe the photographer from my wedding is involved.””

“Victor Lane?””

Daniel looked at Julia.

“You know him?””

“We've received a separate complaint involving his company. I can't discuss another investigation, but I'd advise you not to approach him.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Is he dangerous?””

“I didn't say that. I said don't approach him.””

The detective paused.

“Also, Mr. Bennett, I want you to know something. We've received additional material concerning the alleged $250,000 transfer.””

“What material?””

“A recording.””

Daniel went still.

“What recording?””

“A conversation apparently involving you and another individual discussing the transfer.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“That's impossible. I've never discussed it.””

“That's why we need you to listen to it.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“Someone has fabricated a recording of me.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“Which means they're trying to make the financial complaint stick.””

Margaret approached her son.

“Could Lauren really go this far?””

Daniel looked at the red mark on her cheek.

He remembered her standing in the ballroom, complaining about her dress while his mother struggled to keep her balance.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“I think she already has.””

That evening, they returned to Margaret's house with a police patrol arranged to monitor the street.

Daniel insisted his mother sleep in the downstairs bedroom.

He checked every window before turning off the lights.

At 10:47 p.m., his phone rang.

It was Victor Lane.

Daniel answered but said nothing.

“Mr. Bennett,” Victor said cheerfully.

“I hope I'm not disturbing you.””

Daniel's voice was cold.

“Why were you photographing my mother?””

A brief silence followed.

“Photographing? I'm afraid you've misunderstood.””

“I have the picture.””

“Perhaps someone sent it to you.””

“Don't play games with me.””

Victor sighed.

“Look, Daniel, I was hired to document your wedding. That arrangement ended when you canceled it.””

“Who hired you?””

“Lauren.””

“Who paid you?””

“The client.””

“Which client?””

Another pause.

Then Victor said, “You should ask Robert Hayes.””

Daniel's grip tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he has the rest of the photographs.””

“What photographs?””

Victor lowered his voice.

“The ones from before you met Lauren.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“What do they show?””

“Your father. Robert. And a woman who disappeared twenty years ago.””

Daniel felt a cold sensation move through his chest.

“Who was she?””

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he said, “There's something else. Lauren didn't choose me because I was the best photographer.””

“Why did she choose you?””

“Because I was already working for Robert.””

Daniel stood up.

“What were you supposed to do?””

“Document your life. Your routines. The people you met. Anything that might be useful.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You were spying on me.””

“I was paid to observe.””

“And my mother?””

Victor's voice became uncomfortable.

“She wasn't part of the original arrangement.””

“Then why photograph her?””

“Because Robert wanted to know whether she'd found something.””

Daniel looked at Julia, who had entered the room after hearing his raised voice.

She silently signaled him to put the call on speaker.

Daniel asked, “What did my mother find?””

Victor hesitated.

Then he said something Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.

“Your father didn't die believing Robert was innocent.””

The call disconnected.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Julia immediately picked up her phone.

“We need to record any future calls. I'm contacting Detective Harris.””

But Daniel was already looking toward the old photograph on the mantelpiece.

His father had died when he was nine.

The official report had listed a heart attack.

Margaret had always told him that Thomas Bennett had died peacefully in his sleep.

Now a stranger was suggesting that his father had died with a secret.

Daniel walked upstairs.

“Mom?””

Margaret appeared at the bedroom door.

“What's wrong?””

He studied her face.

“Did Dad ever tell you he was afraid of Robert?””

Margaret's expression changed.

She looked toward the closed bedroom door.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Margaret took his hand.

“Your father was going to report Robert for stealing from the company. Two days before he died, he told me that if anything happened to him, I had to protect you.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“Protect me from Robert?””

Margaret nodded.

Then she opened a drawer and removed a small photograph.

It showed Thomas standing outside a building with another woman.

On the back, his handwriting read:

*Eleanor knows the truth. Keep Daniel away from the Hayes family.*

Daniel stared at the photograph.

The woman beside his father was not Eleanor Price.

It was someone else.

Someone he had never seen before.

Margaret whispered her name.

“Rebecca Hayes.””

Daniel looked up.

“Robert's wife?””

May you like

Margaret nodded.

“She disappeared three months before your father died.””
