Chapter 13: The Daughter Nobody Was Allowed to Find

Daniel stared at his mother.

For twenty-three years, he had believed he was Thomas and Margaret Bennett's only child.

Now he was learning that his father had another daughter.

And his mother had known.

“Mom,” he whispered.

“What did you just say?””

Margaret lowered herself into the nearest chair.

“I knew she existed.””

Daniel took a step backward.

“How?””

Margaret looked at Rebecca, then at Patricia.

“Because Thomas told me before he died.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Before he died?””

Margaret nodded.

“He came home one evening and told me there was a little girl. Her name was Emily. She was four years old.””

Daniel stared.

“Where was she?””

“With her mother. A woman named Catherine Miller.””

Rebecca slowly sat down.

“Catherine?””

Margaret nodded.

“She had worked for Bennett Development before your father and Robert became business partners. Thomas told me they had been involved before he met me.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“So Dad had another family?””

“No,” Margaret said quickly.

“Not another family. He made a mistake years before we married. But he never abandoned the child.””

She opened the old wooden box and removed another envelope.

“This was inside your father's papers.””

Daniel took it.

The envelope contained a photograph of a little girl with dark curls, standing beside Thomas in a garden.

On the back, his father had written:

*Emily, my beautiful girl. One day, I hope you and Daniel will know each other.*

Daniel's throat tightened.

He had spent his childhood asking his father for a sister.

Thomas had always smiled and told him that perhaps one day.

Now he understood why.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” he asked.

Margaret began crying.

“Because Robert threatened to use the information against us. He said he would tell everyone that your father had hidden money and lied about his family. He said it would destroy the company and your future.””

“So you kept her existence secret?””

“I tried to find her after your father died. But Catherine had moved. The letters came back. Then Robert told me she had taken Emily away permanently.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“That wasn't true.””

Margaret looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“Catherine didn't leave voluntarily. She was frightened of Robert. She knew about the company fraud, and she had copies of documents Thomas had given her.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Where is she now?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't know. But I know Emily survived.””

Eleanor Price was still on the phone.

“Mr. Bennett, I need to explain the trust arrangement.””

Daniel put the call on speaker.

Eleanor continued.

“Thomas established a separate family protection trust for Emily. It was designed to provide her with financial security without exposing her identity.””

“Why?””

“Because your father believed Robert might use the child to pressure him. The trust was structured so that neither Robert nor anyone connected to Hayes Capital could access the funds.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“How much money?””

“Approximately $3.8 million, including accumulated investments.””

Patricia let out a quiet gasp.

Daniel barely reacted.

“Where is Emily?””

“I have an address associated with the original beneficiary records. However, the identity needs to be confirmed.””

Julia immediately spoke.

“We'll need the full legal documentation.””

“Of course,” Eleanor replied.

Before the call ended, she added something else.

“There's one more detail. The trust was recently reviewed by someone claiming to represent Emily.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

“A solicitor using the name Jonathan Reed.””

Michael's name suddenly seemed to echo through the room.

Daniel turned toward him.

“Michael?””

Michael looked genuinely confused.

“That's not me.””

Eleanor continued.

“The solicitor submitted a request for the trust's current value and beneficiary information. The request was rejected because the authorization was incomplete.””

Julia asked for the documents to be forwarded.

Then Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Did Dad ever tell you why he created the trust?””

Margaret nodded.

“He wanted Emily to have something that Robert could never take from her. He also wanted you to meet her someday.””

She handed Daniel a second letter.

This one was addressed to both children.

My dear Daniel and Emily,

If you are reading this together, then I have failed to give you the one thing I wanted most: the chance to grow up knowing each other.

I hope you will understand that love is not measured by the number of years people spend together. It is measured by what they are willing to protect.

I made mistakes. I cannot change that. But I never stopped loving either of you.

Please don't let the mistakes of the past become the walls between you.

Daniel read the final sentence twice.

Then he looked at his mother.

“Did you hate her?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I was hurt. I was angry. I was young, and I was afraid of losing your father.

But Emily was a little girl. She had done nothing wrong.””

Daniel sat beside her.

“Then we need to find her.””

Julia received the beneficiary documents twenty minutes later.

The address belonged to a woman named Emily Miller, living in a neighboring state.

There was also a telephone number.

Daniel dialed.

A woman answered.

“Hello?””

“Is this Emily Miller?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Bennett.””

Silence.

Then the woman said, “I know who you are.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You do?””

“My mother told me about you.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Your mother is Catherine?””

“Yes.””

“Is she available?””

A pause followed.

Then Emily's voice became strained.

“My mother died five years ago.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I'm sorry.””

“She spent years trying to contact your family. She said your father promised he'd bring us together.””

Daniel swallowed.

“He did.””

“Then why didn't he?””

Daniel didn't have an answer.

Emily continued.

“My mother kept every letter. Every photograph. She also kept a document that someone came looking for last month.””

Daniel straightened.

“What document?””

“An original trust agreement. A man offered her money for it before she died. She refused.””

“Who was the man?””

Emily hesitated.

“Robert Hayes.””

Daniel looked at Julia.

“What did he offer?””

“Two hundred thousand dollars. He said the document was worthless, but he wanted it destroyed.””

Daniel felt his jaw tighten.

“Do you still have it?””

“Yes.””

“Would you meet me?””

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked, “Is Margaret Bennett alive?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Yes.””

“Does she know about me?””

“She does.””

Another silence.

Then Emily whispered:

“I've wanted to meet her my entire life.””

Margaret reached for the phone.

“Emily?””

The woman's breath caught.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Margaret began crying.

“I'm so sorry, sweetheart.””

Emily's voice broke.

“I don't blame you.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Your father loved you.””

“I know. My mother told me.””

They agreed to meet the following morning.

But before Daniel could end the call, Emily added:

“There's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“My mother didn't just leave me the trust documents.””

Daniel waited.

“She left me a letter explaining what happened to your father.””

His grip tightened.

“What did she say?””

Emily's voice became barely audible.

“She said Thomas Bennett was alive when Robert Hayes took him away. And she said the man who helped Robert wasn't the only person involved.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Who else?””

Emily answered:

“Someone from your mother's family.””

Daniel turned toward Margaret.

May you like

Her face had gone white.

And suddenly, the secret that had haunted the Bennett family for twenty years had become even more dangerous.
