Chapter 12: The Husband Everyone Thought Was Dead

Patricia knocked again.

“Rebecca, I know you're inside.””

Daniel looked toward Julia.

She had already connected with Detective Harris, who promised to send officers immediately.

But the church stood far from the main road.

They had no idea how long it would take.

Rebecca stepped away from the entrance.

“Don't let them in.””

Daniel moved in front of his mother.

“Why did you come here, Patricia?””

Patricia's voice came through the door.

“Because this has gone too far.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Your daughter slapped my mother in front of two hundred people. Your family has been threatening us. And now you're standing outside with a man who supposedly died years ago.””

There was silence.

Then Patricia answered.

“Edward wants to speak to you.””

“Then he can speak through the door.””

The man beside her stepped forward.

“My name is Edward Whitmore.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“I know who you are.””

“No, Daniel. You know the story Robert told everyone.””

Edward lifted the photograph.

It showed Thomas Bennett standing outside the garage.

“I was there the night your father died.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Daniel's voice became cold.

“What did you do?””

Edward looked down.

“I helped Robert move him.””

Margaret made a small sound.

Daniel stepped toward the door.

“Was my father alive?””

Edward didn't answer.

“Was he?””

“Yes.””

Margaret began crying.

Edward continued.

“He was injured. Robert told me he had already called for help. I believed him.””

Rebecca's voice came from behind Daniel.

“You're lying.””

Edward looked toward the window.

“I know what you saw, Rebecca. But you didn't see everything.””

“You helped Robert put Thomas in a car.””

“I was following instructions.””

“You told me he was dead!””

Edward lowered his head.

“I was told he had died.””

Rebecca shook with anger.

“You left him there.””

Edward looked at Daniel.

“I've carried that night with me for twenty years.””

Daniel opened the door slightly, keeping the chain engaged.

“Why are you here?””

Edward looked exhausted.

“Because Lauren is making the same mistake I made. She believes Robert will protect her once she has helped him obtain your inheritance.””

Daniel stared.

“What do you mean?””

Edward looked toward Patricia.

She began crying.

“Robert has been using our family for years,” she said.

Daniel didn't respond.

Patricia continued.

“Edward was supposed to help him transfer the company assets. When things went wrong, Robert arranged for him to disappear. I was told to tell everyone that my husband had died in an accident.””

“Why did you agree?””

“Because Robert threatened Lauren.””

Rebecca gave a bitter laugh.

“You protected your daughter by helping him destroy another family.””

Patricia looked down.

“I know.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Where is Lauren now?””

“At Robert's estate.””

“Why?””

Patricia hesitated.

“Because she found out that the wedding was canceled and that you had discovered the trust.””

Daniel stared.

“What is she doing there?””

Edward answered.

“She wants Robert to help her recover the money she believes she is owed.””

“She's not owed anything.””

Edward looked at him.

“That's what I told her.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Did you speak to Lauren?””

“Last night. She was furious. She said Robert had promised her a share of the company if she married you.””

Daniel looked at Julia.

Julia nodded slowly.

“That would explain the attempted beneficiary changes.””

Patricia stepped closer to the door.

“Daniel, please. I want to help.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have something Robert doesn't know I kept.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small leather notebook.

Edward looked alarmed.

“Patricia, don't.””

She ignored him.

“This belonged to Robert. He gave it to me after Thomas died. It contains account numbers, payments, and the names of people who helped him.””

Daniel stared at the notebook.

“Why did you keep it?””

“Because I knew one day he'd turn on us.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Does it contain the name of the man who drove Thomas away from the garage?””

Patricia nodded.

“And the name of the doctor who signed the original death certificate.””

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

“The doctor?””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Your husband wasn't examined by the doctor whose name appears on the certificate.””

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

“What?””

“Robert arranged everything. He said it would prevent a scandal.””

Rebecca began crying again.

For twenty years, she had believed Thomas's body had been hidden or destroyed.

Now another possibility emerged.

Perhaps the entire official account of his death had been fabricated.

Daniel opened the door.

“Come inside.””

Patricia entered first.

Edward followed.

Julia immediately asked them to sit separately.

“Before anyone says another word, I need to make something clear. Everything discussed here must be preserved for the authorities.””

Edward nodded.

“I understand.””

Daniel placed the photograph of Thomas on the table.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Edward rubbed his hands together.

“Robert called me that evening. He said Thomas had stolen company documents and was threatening to expose us. He wanted me to help retrieve them.””

“Did you know about the financial fraud?””

“I knew Robert was moving money. I didn't know the full extent.””

“Why did you go to the garage?””

“Because Robert promised me a position in the new company.””

Daniel stared.

“You helped him for a promotion?””

Edward looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

He explained that when he arrived, Thomas was already injured.

Robert claimed Thomas had fallen during an argument.

Edward helped move him into a vehicle.

He believed they were taking him to a private clinic.

But when they reached a secluded property outside town, Robert ordered him to leave.

“I heard Thomas asking for Daniel,” Edward said.

Margaret covered her face.

“What happened after that?””

“I don't know. I left.””

Rebecca slammed her hand against the table.

“You knew he wasn't dead!””

Edward looked at her.

“I knew he was hurt. I didn't know what Robert intended to do.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then why did you disappear?””

Edward's eyes filled.

“Because Robert told me Thomas had died and that I would be blamed if anyone discovered my involvement.””

Julia interrupted.

“Did you ever see a body?””

Edward shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you attend the funeral?””

“No. Robert said it would be safer if I left the country.””

Daniel stared at him.

For twenty years, his family had mourned a man whose final hours might never have been properly investigated.

His mother had raised him alone.

Rebecca had lived in hiding.

And Robert Hayes had built an empire on the belief that nobody would ever connect the pieces.

Daniel looked at Patricia.

“Where is the notebook?””

She placed it on the table.

Julia opened it carefully.

Several pages contained names and account numbers.

One entry was marked with a red star.

*Thomas Bennett — Private Medical Transfer.*

Beneath it was an address.

A private rehabilitation facility.

Daniel stared at the words.

“Medical transfer?””

Patricia nodded.

“Robert made payments to that facility for almost a year after your father's supposed death.””

Margaret stood abruptly.

“Where is it?””

Patricia looked at Daniel.

“It's outside Hartford. The facility closed several years ago, but the records were transferred to another medical archive.””

Daniel couldn't speak.

His father's official death certificate had said he died from a heart attack.

But the notebook suggested he might have survived the night of the garage incident.

Rebecca slowly sat down.

“Thomas could have been alive.””

Margaret began crying.

Daniel took her hand.

“Mom…”

She looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.

“Twenty years, Daniel. I spent twenty years believing he was gone.””

Julia photographed the notebook and immediately contacted Detective Harris.

Before she could finish the call, Daniel's phone rang.

It was Lauren.

He stared at her name.

Then he answered.

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded different.

No anger.

No arrogance.

Just fear.

“Daniel, please. You have to help me.””

He said nothing.

Lauren continued.

“Robert has gone crazy. He locked me inside the estate. He says I owe him money.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“What money?””

“The money from your mother. The payments. Everything.””

“You took money from my mother.””

“I know.””

“You tried to steal from my company.””

“I know!””

Her voice broke.

“Daniel, I made a mistake.””

He looked at Margaret.

Her cheek still carried the mark of Lauren's hand.

“What do you want?””

Lauren began sobbing.

“I want you to come get me.””

Daniel remained silent.

Then she whispered:

“Robert found out I was going to tell you about the second trust.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What second trust?””

There was a long pause.

Then Lauren said:

“The one your father created for Rebecca Hayes.””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

Her face had gone completely white.

“What did you just say?””

Lauren's voice trembled.

“Your father didn't just leave you money, Daniel. He left Rebecca something too.””

The call suddenly became muffled.

A man's voice shouted in the background.

Robert.

Then Lauren screamed.

“Daniel! Listen to me! The person Robert has been trying to find all these years isn't Rebecca!””

A crash echoed through the phone.

Then the call went dead.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Rebecca slowly stood.

“What did she mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor Price called.

Daniel picked up immediately.

Her voice was urgent.

“Daniel, I have just received confirmation from the original trustee. Your father's second trust contains a beneficiary whose identity was deliberately concealed.””

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Who?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“Your father named his daughter.””

Daniel froze.

“His daughter?””

Margaret's hand slipped from his.

Eleanor continued.

“According to the original trust documents, Thomas Bennett had another child.””

Daniel stared at his mother.

Margaret's lips parted.

May you like

Then she whispered four words that changed everything.

“I knew she existed.””
