Chapter 14: The Truth Buried Beneath Twenty Years of Lies

Emily arrived the following morning carrying a small leather suitcase.

She was thirty years old, with dark brown hair and the same thoughtful eyes Daniel remembered from his father's photograph.

Margaret stood outside the house waiting for her.

Neither woman spoke at first.

Then Emily looked at the elderly woman standing on the porch.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Margaret smiled through her tears.

“Please call me Margaret.””

Emily stepped forward.

“I don't know what to say.””

Margaret opened her arms.

“You don't have to say anything.””

They embraced.

Daniel stood a few feet away, watching the scene.

His mother had lost her husband, spent years protecting their home, and carried the burden of a secret daughter who had never been allowed to become part of their family.

Now, at last, the two women were standing together.

Inside, Emily placed the suitcase on the dining table.

“I brought everything my mother left me.””

She opened it.

There were photographs, letters, medical documents, and a sealed envelope.

Daniel recognized his father's handwriting immediately.

Emily handed it to him.

“My mother said this was meant for you.””

He opened it.

Daniel,

If this letter reaches you, then something happened before I could explain everything.

There was a second person involved in the events surrounding Rebecca's disappearance and the destruction of our company.

I believe this person is connected to Margaret's family.

Daniel stopped reading.

Margaret looked at him.

“My family?””

He continued.

I have reason to believe that someone close to us provided Robert with information about our private accounts, our movements, and the location of important documents.

I don't want you to accuse anyone without proof. But you must understand that betrayal rarely comes from the people standing outside your door.

Daniel lowered the letter.

“Who in your family, Mom?””

Margaret looked genuinely frightened.

“My brother.””

Daniel stared.

“Uncle Peter?””

She nodded slowly.

Peter Collins had been Margaret's older brother.

He had died eight years earlier, after years of living abroad.

Daniel remembered him as a charming man who brought expensive gifts whenever he visited.

He had always seemed generous.

But Margaret's expression suggested something different.

“Your father and Peter had an argument shortly before Thomas died,” she said.

“What about?””

“Money.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“I remember Peter.””

Margaret looked at her.

“He came to the company office several times. Robert introduced him as a financial consultant.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Was he working with Robert?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I believe so.””

Emily removed another document from the suitcase.

It was a bank statement.

The account holder was Peter Collins.

The deposits had been made by Hayes Development.

The first transfer was dated three weeks before Thomas's death.

The final transfer occurred two months afterward.

Daniel looked at the amounts.

They totaled nearly $600,000.

“Why would Robert pay him that much?””

Julia examined the documents.

“Possibly for information or assistance with the transfers.””

Emily removed another envelope.

“My mother wrote this shortly before she died.””

The letter explained that Peter had contacted Catherine after Thomas disappeared.

He told her that Robert had arranged a safe place for Thomas and that the family should stop asking questions.

Catherine didn't believe him.

She confronted Peter and demanded proof.

Instead, he threatened to have her arrested for possessing stolen company documents.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Did Peter ever tell you Dad was alive?””

Margaret slowly shook her head.

“No. He told me Thomas had died peacefully and that I should stop asking questions.””

Daniel stood.

“So your own brother helped Robert?””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“I can't believe it.””

Rebecca placed a hand on her shoulder.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel looked through the remaining documents.

Then he found something that made him stop.

A medical transfer record.

The patient name was Thomas Bennett.

The destination was a private rehabilitation facility called St. Catherine's Recovery Center.

The admission date was the day after the garage incident.

Daniel stared.

“He was alive.””

Julia examined the document.

“The record appears genuine.””

Emily pointed to the final page.

“My mother wrote that the facility was paid through an account controlled by Peter Collins.””

Daniel immediately called the number listed on the archived record.

The facility had closed, but the records had been transferred to a regional medical archive.

Julia contacted the administrator.

After several calls and identity checks, they received confirmation that a patient matching Thomas's details had been admitted twenty years earlier.

Daniel could barely speak.

“What happened to him?””

The administrator promised to locate the archived discharge records.

While they waited, Daniel called Eleanor Price.

She confirmed that the second trust had remained untouched.

But she also revealed something troubling.

“Mr. Bennett, the trustee recently received a request to transfer the beneficiary designation from Emily to another individual.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who requested it?””

“Robert Hayes.””

Julia immediately asked for the original submission.

It was forwarded within minutes.

The document contained a forged signature from Emily.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you sign this?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Julia examined the authorization.

“This is another attempt to use fabricated documents to obtain control of the trust.””

Daniel looked at the date.

It had been submitted two weeks before the wedding.

Lauren had known about Emily.

She had been trying to obtain the trust information before Daniel even discovered his father's second child.

“Robert and Lauren were working together,” Daniel said.

Emily nodded.

“My mother warned me about her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What did Catherine know?””

Emily opened a final letter.

It was addressed to her.

Emily,

If anyone approaches you about your father's inheritance, be careful. Robert Hayes has spent years trying to obtain the original trust documents.

He believes the trust contains more than money.

Your father placed something inside the original agreement that could expose the entire company fraud.

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Julia examined the trust documents.

She turned to the final page.

There was a reference to an attached schedule that had never appeared in the digital records.

A handwritten note identified it as:

*Schedule C — Beneficial Ownership and Undisclosed Assets.*

Michael, who had arrived shortly before, began searching the company's archived database.

Then he stopped.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“Schedule C identifies the original owners of every property Robert transferred.””

Daniel leaned over the laptop.

The list included several buildings, commercial sites, and parcels of land.

Some had been sold.

Others were still owned by companies connected to Hayes Capital Partners.

The total estimated value exceeded $70 million.

Daniel stared.

“Robert has been hiding the assets all these years.””

Julia nodded.

“And if the original ownership documents are authentic, the transfers may be challenged.””

Emily looked at her father's letter.

“He wanted the truth to come out.””

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“Thomas never wanted money to become the reason his children fought.””

Daniel took Emily's hand.

“We won't let that happen.””

His phone rang.

It was the medical archive administrator.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Have you found the records?””

“Yes, Mr. Bennett. We located the admission and discharge files.””

“Was my father alive?””

“Yes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The administrator continued.

“Mr. Thomas Bennett was discharged from St. Catherine's Recovery Center eleven months after his admission.””

Margaret gasped.

“Eleven months?””

Daniel gripped the table.

“Where was he transferred?””

The administrator paused.

“According to the file, he was moved to a private residence under the care of a legal guardian.””

“Who?””

The administrator read the name.

“Peter Collins.””

Margaret began shaking.

Daniel stared at her.

His uncle had been responsible for his father's care.

For eleven months, Thomas had been alive.

Then he had vanished again.

“Do you have a forwarding address?””

“Yes. The last recorded location was a property outside Hartford.””

Julia immediately wrote it down.

Daniel looked toward Emily.

“Your mother said he was alive when Robert took him away.””

Emily nodded.

“Maybe he survived longer than anyone knew.””

Margaret reached for the phone.

“Can we find out where he went?””

Daniel looked at the administrator.

“Is there any record of his death?””

A long pause followed.

Then the administrator said:

“No, Mr. Bennett.””

Daniel felt his heart pounding.

“What do you mean?””

“There is no death certificate in the medical archive.””

The room went silent.

His father might not have died twenty years ago.

And if that was true, every sacrifice Margaret had made, every year of mourning, and every lie Robert had told would have to be reconsidered.

Then Julia's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and slowly stood.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

She looked at him.

“Detective Harris has located Robert Hayes.””

“Where?””

“At his private estate.””

“And Lauren?””

Julia hesitated.

“She is there too.””

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of an elderly man sitting beside a window.

His hair was completely white.

His face was thinner, but Daniel recognized the eyes.

The caption read:

*If you want to know what happened to your father, come to the Hayes estate tonight. Come alone.*

Daniel stared at the photograph.

May you like

Then Margaret whispered:

“Thomas.””
