Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Jayden knew he shouldn’t go.

Every instinct told him that.

His father would tell him not to.

Mia would tell him not to.

Any adult with common sense would tell him not to meet an unknown person in an abandoned area.

But Jayden also knew something else.

The person who called knew something important.

And information was the only weapon they had.

So he went.

Not because he was fearless.

Because he was tired of being powerless.

The old harbor road was almost empty at night.

The wind carried the smell of salt and rain.

Jayden walked toward the abandoned building.

The same warehouse area where Daniel Voss had met Caroline Harper.

His heart beat faster.

Then a figure stepped out of the shadows.

Jayden stopped.

The man raised his hands.

“Relax.””

Jayden didn’t move.

“Who are you?””

The man looked around fifty.

Tired face.

Old jacket.

Eyes that looked like someone who had spent years regretting something.

“My name is Samuel Reed.””

Jayden waited.

“I used to work for North Shore.””

That immediately changed everything.

“Why should I trust you?””

Samuel smiled sadly.

“You shouldn’t.””

Jayden wasn’t expecting that.

“I’m serious.””

Samuel stepped closer.

“I’m not asking you to trust me. I’m asking you to listen.””

Jayden stayed silent.

Samuel looked toward the harbor.

“Fifteen years ago, North Shore tried to buy this land.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Samuel shook his head.

“You know the public story.””

He looked back at Jayden.

“You don’t know what happened behind closed doors.””

Samuel explained.

North Shore wasn’t just interested in property.

They wanted control.

The waterfront was valuable because of its location.

Shipping access.

Tourism potential.

Future development.

But there was one problem.

Local families.

People like Owen Cole.

People who refused to sell.

“So they changed strategy,” Jayden said.

Samuel nodded.

“They stopped fighting the owners directly.””

“What did they do?””

“They started gaining influence.””

Politics.

Business relationships.

Community programs.

Anything that made people trust them.

Jayden thought of Mayor Bennett.

“Richard Bennett.””

Samuel’s expression darkened.

“Yes.””

“He works for them?””

“Not officially.””

Samuel looked away.

“That’s the dangerous part.””

Jayden asked the question that mattered most.

“What about Mrs. Harper?””

Samuel sighed.

“She was desperate.””

“For money?””

“For another chance.””

“What does that mean?””

“North Shore promised her a position if she helped them.””

Jayden felt anger rise.

“She hurt me for a job?””

Samuel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked serious.

“She convinced herself she was doing something necessary.””

Jayden hated that answer.

Because it sounded familiar.

People always found ways to justify hurting others.

“Why are you helping me?””

Samuel became quiet.

Finally, he answered.

“Because I was there when your father refused the first offer.””

Jayden waited.

“I watched Daniel Voss tell him that everyone has a breaking point.””

Samuel looked ashamed.

“And I believed him.””

“What happened?””

“I helped them.””

The confession shocked Jayden.

Samuel continued.

“I leaked information about property owners.””

Jayden stepped back.

“You were part of this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why should I believe anything you say?””

“Because I know how they operate.””

Samuel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small notebook.

“This contains meetings.””

Jayden took it.

“Names. Dates. Payments.””

“Proof?””

“Enough to start.””

Jayden looked at the notebook.

Then at Samuel.

“Why now?””

Samuel looked toward the dark water.

“Because when I saw what they did to you…”

He paused.

“I remembered the first person they hurt.””

“Who?””

Samuel’s voice became quiet.

“Your mother.””

Jayden froze.

“My mother?””

Samuel nodded.

“Before she met your father, she worked at the harbor office.””

Jayden stared.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Samuel looked at him.

“She discovered something she wasn’t supposed to find.””

Before Jayden could ask more, headlights appeared.

A car.

Samuel’s expression changed.

“You need to leave.””

“Who is that?””

“Someone who cannot know I spoke to you.””

Jayden looked toward the road.

“Come with me.””

Samuel shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because my part of the story is almost over.””

The car stopped.

Jayden heard a door open.

Samuel pushed the notebook into his hands.

“Trust evidence.””

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Jayden ran.

When he returned home, Mia was waiting outside.

She looked furious.

“You went alone?””

Jayden stopped.

“How did you know?””

“Because your location was shared.””

His face changed.

“What?””

Mia held up her phone.

“I installed tracking after everything started.””

Jayden stared.

“You tracked me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you make terrible decisions.””

For the first time in days, Jayden almost laughed.

Almost.

Then Mia saw the notebook.

“What is that?””

May you like

Jayden looked at it.

“I think this changes everything.””
