Chapter 6: The Evidence That Changed Everything
The envelope contained only one piece of paper.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just a message.
YOUR FAMILY WILL LOSE EVERYTHING IF YOU CONTINUE.
Jayden read it three times.
Then he looked at his father.
“They’re threatening us.””
Owen folded the paper carefully.
“Yes.””
“You’re not scared?””
His father looked around the shop.
At the walls.
The photographs.
The memories.
“I am.””
Jayden didn’t expect that answer.
Owen continued.
“But fear doesn’t decide what we do.””
Jayden nodded slowly.
Those words stayed with him.
The next day, the school held the disciplinary hearing.
Everyone expected Jayden to be punished.
The conference room was full.
Principal Walters.
School board members.
Mrs. Harper.
Officer Grant.
Jayden sat across from them.
Alone.
Until Mia walked in.
Then Ethan.
Then three more students.
The room changed.
Mrs. Harper looked surprised.
“What are they doing here?””
Principal Walters answered.
“They are witnesses.””
Her expression hardened.
Jayden noticed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
The hearing began.
Mrs. Harper spoke first.
“I was attacked by a student.””
Simple.
Clean.
A story people understood.
Then Jayden’s turn came.
He stood.
“My action was wrong.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Jayden continued.
“But what happened before that matters.””
He looked at Mia.
She connected the laptop.
The video played.
The room became silent.
The ruler.
The strike.
The insult.
Then the whisper.
The six seconds.
Nobody moved.
Mrs. Harper’s face changed.
The board members looked at each other.
Principal Walters looked down.
Officer Grant looked uncomfortable.
The truth had finally entered the room.
Then Ethan stood.
“I saw it.””
Another student stood.
“So did I.””
Then another.
Soon, several voices confirmed the same thing.
Mrs. Harper looked around.
She was losing control.
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“This is manipulated.””
Mia shook her head.
“It’s not.””
Mrs. Harper turned toward her.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
The sentence slipped out.
Too fast.
Too honest.
Jayden noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Principal Walters leaned forward.
“What does that mean?””
Mrs. Harper went silent.
For the first time, she had no prepared answer.
The board meeting continued for hours.
By the end, Mrs. Harper was placed on administrative leave.
Not fired.
Not yet.
But removed.
For Jayden, it should have felt like victory.
It didn’t.
Because he knew.
She was only one piece.
The bigger problem remained.
That night, Mia sent him a new file.
“I found something else.””
Jayden opened it.
A photograph appeared.
A meeting.
Daniel Voss.
Caroline Harper.
And someone else.
Someone Jayden recognized.
His heart stopped.
The third person was not from North Shore.
Not from the school.
It was someone from Harbor Bay.
Someone everyone trusted.
The town mayor.
Jayden stared at the screen.
Mia’s message appeared.
We were looking at the wrong enemy.
Jayden looked out his bedroom window.
The harbor lights reflected on the water.
His family had fought storms before.
But this storm was different.
Because this time, the people trying to destroy them weren’t standing outside the town.
May you like
They were standing inside it.
And they had been planning for a long time.
