Chapter 13: The Person Behind The War

Jayden returned to Harbor Bay with one question burning in his mind.

Who was really behind everything?

Not Daniel Voss.

Not Caroline Harper.

Not Mayor Bennett.

Not even Victor Cole.

They were all pieces.

Pieces of a plan created by someone else.

When Jayden arrived at the seafood shop, he saw his father standing outside.

For a moment, he forgot everything else.

He ran.

“Dad.””

Owen hugged him tightly.

Jayden had spent days imagining this moment.

He thought he would feel relief.

Instead, he felt anger.

Not at his father.

At the entire situation.

“They almost destroyed us.””

Owen nodded.

“I know.””

“Everyone knew something except us.””

His father looked at him carefully.

“That’s not true.””

Jayden stepped back.

“What do you mean?””

Owen sighed.

“There were things I suspected.””

Jayden’s expression changed.

“You knew?””

“I knew someone was moving against us.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I wanted to protect you.””

Jayden shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Owen looked confused.

“What?””

“Protect you. Protect the family. Protect everyone.””

Jayden’s voice became emotional.

“But nobody asks if we want to be protected by being kept in the dark.””

Silence.

Owen looked at his son.

And for the first time, he saw something different.

Not a child.

Someone who had been forced to grow up quickly.

“You’re right.””

Jayden didn’t expect that.

His father continued.

“I made the same mistake your uncle made.””

“What?””

“I thought controlling information was the same as protecting people.””

Owen looked toward the harbor.

“But secrets only create space for other people to control the story.””

They gathered at the seafood shop.

Jayden.

Owen.

Rosa.

Mia.

Samuel.

Even Victor.

The room felt impossible.

Enemies.

Family.

All sitting together.

But everyone understood one thing.

They had a bigger problem.

Samuel placed documents on the table.

“Victor was manipulated.””

Jayden looked at him.

“By who?””

Samuel opened an old file.

A name appeared.

Eleanor Voss.

Jayden frowned.

“Voss?””

Samuel nodded.

“Daniel Voss’s mother.””

Mia searched quickly.

“She founded North Shore?””

“Yes.””

Samuel looked serious.

“Daniel is not the person who created the operation.””

Jayden stared at the documents.

Eleanor Voss.

A woman who rarely appeared publicly.

A woman who built North Shore from a small investment company into a national development corporation.

“She was behind it?””

Samuel nodded.

“From the beginning.””

The story was worse than Jayden imagined.

Years ago, Eleanor Voss discovered that Harbor Bay was one of the last undeveloped coastal areas.

She saw opportunity.

Not communities.

Not families.

Opportunity.

When people refused to sell, she didn’t fight them directly.

She studied them.

She learned their weaknesses.

Their relationships.

Their fears.

“She created pressure points,” Samuel explained.

Jayden looked at the names.

“Mayor Bennett.””

“Yes.””

“Mrs. Harper.””

“Yes.””

“Victor.””

“Yes.””

Everyone had a weakness.

Everyone had something Eleanor could use.

Jayden looked at his father.

“What about you?””

Owen was silent.

Then:

“She couldn’t control me.””

Jayden understood.

“That’s why she targeted me.””

Owen looked down.

“Yes.””

The realization hurt.

They didn’t attack Jayden because he was weak.

They attacked him because he mattered.

That evening, they made their final plan.

The evidence would be released publicly.

Not through one person.

Through everyone.

Mia contacted reporters.

Samuel prepared financial documents.

Victor provided internal company records.

Even Mayor Bennett’s assistant secretly agreed to testify after seeing the evidence.

But there was one problem.

Eleanor Voss knew they had something.

And powerful people didn’t wait for danger.

They removed it.

The attack came before midnight.

Not physical.

Legal.

News stations received reports claiming Owen Cole had committed fraud.

Online rumors spread.

Fake documents appeared.

Suddenly, the family became criminals again.

Jayden watched the headlines appear.

“COLE SEAFOOD OWNER ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT.””

He felt sick.

“They’re doing it again.””

Mia nodded.

“They’re changing the story.””

Samuel looked worried.

“This is how they win.””

Jayden looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“They don’t have to prove they’re right.””

Samuel pointed at the screen.

“They only have to make people doubt.””

Then something unexpected happened.

A livestream started.

Mayor Richard Bennett appeared.

Everyone stopped.

The mayor looked exhausted.

Not like the confident man from television.

Like someone who had finally accepted what he had done.

“I owe the people of Harbor Bay the truth.””

Jayden stared.

The mayor continued.

“I have spent years protecting a project that should never have existed.””

The room became silent.

He admitted everything.

The meetings.

The pressure.

The manipulation.

The cooperation with North Shore.

And then he said the sentence nobody expected.

“Eleanor Voss is still attempting to control this town.””

Within minutes, Harbor Bay exploded.

The truth was finally public.

But Eleanor Voss was not finished.

Because powerful people rarely surrender quietly.

An hour later, Jayden received a message.

Not from an unknown number.

From Eleanor herself.

I underestimated you.

Jayden stared.

Another message appeared.

That was my mistake.

Then:

NOW I WILL SHOW YOU WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE LIKE YOU CHALLENGE PEOPLE LIKE ME.

Jayden looked at the screen.

For the first time, he wasn’t afraid.

Because fear depended on secrets.

May you like

And the secrets were gone.

Almost all of them.
