Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed To See

The next morning, Jayden woke up before his alarm.

He always did.

Growing up around fishermen and seafood workers taught him that sleep was a luxury.

His father woke before sunrise.

His mother followed minutes later.

The house was always quiet in those early hours.

Quiet except for the sounds of preparation.

Coffee brewing.

Keys moving.

The front door opening.

Jayden walked into the kitchen.

Owen Cole stood by the counter, wearing his work jacket.

His hands were rough.

His hair had started turning gray.

But his eyes were still strong.

“You’re up early.””

Jayden shrugged.

“Couldn’t sleep.””

His father studied him.

Parents always knew.

Even when children said nothing.

“What happened?””

Jayden looked down.

For a moment, he considered lying.

Then he remembered who he was talking to.

He told him everything.

The ruler.

The insult.

The slap.

The office.

Owen listened without interrupting.

When Jayden finished, his father was silent.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Just thinking.

“Did you hit her?””

Jayden nodded.

“Yes.””

Owen sighed.

“That part will be difficult.””

Jayden looked up.

“So you’re mad at me?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I’m worried about you.””

Jayden looked confused.

Owen sat across from him.

“Sometimes people create a trap where your reaction becomes the only thing everyone sees.””

Jayden looked away.

“That’s exactly what happened.””

“Maybe.””

His father paused.

“But we need facts.””

Jayden remembered Mia.

He wondered if anyone else had seen.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

A message appeared.

I have something you need to see.

Attached was a video.

Jayden frowned.

He played it.

The classroom appeared.

His own face.

Mrs. Harper.

The ruler.

His heart started racing.

But then he heard it.

The whisper.

“Maybe now your father will reconsider that waterfront offer.””

Jayden froze.

His father noticed.

“What is it?””

Jayden handed him the phone.

Owen watched.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

“What did she mean?””

Jayden looked at him.

“You know?””

Owen placed the phone down.

“I know people want our property.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His father looked toward the window.

Outside, the harbor was waking up.

Boats moved across the water.

Workers prepared for another day.

Everything his family had built was there.

Finally, Owen spoke.

“Three months ago, someone made an offer.””

“How much?””

“More than we could ever need.””

Jayden stared.

“Then why didn’t you sell?””

His father smiled sadly.

“Because not everything has a price.””

Jayden looked back at the video.

“But Mrs. Harper knows about it.””

“That worries me.””

“Why?””

Owen didn’t answer immediately.

That scared Jayden more than anything.

Because his father was not a man who avoided answers.

“She used to work with the company that made the offer.””

Jayden’s eyes widened.

“What?””

Owen nodded.

“Before she became a teacher, she worked in corporate negotiations.””

The room became silent.

Jayden suddenly understood.

This was bigger than school.

Bigger than a slap.

Mrs. Harper had used the classroom.

She had used him.

But why?

To punish him?

Or to send a message to his father?

His phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from Mia.

I think your teacher is trying to force your family to sell.

Jayden stared at the words.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

Then another message appeared.

Be careful. I think she knows someone is watching.

Jayden looked toward the window.

For the first time since yesterday, he felt something stronger than anger.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For his family.

At school, rumors spread faster than any announcement.

By lunch, everyone knew.

Jayden Cole hit a teacher.

Some students avoided him.

Some whispered.

Some looked at him like he was dangerous.

But a few looked uncertain.

Because they had seen something.

They knew the story wasn’t complete.

Mia found him near the library.

“Jayden.””

He turned.

She looked nervous.

“You sent the video?””

She nodded.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know what else to do.””

“You did the right thing.””

Mia looked surprised.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

Jayden lowered his voice.

“Thank you.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Mia said:

“There’s something else.””

Jayden waited.

“I think Mrs. Harper wasn’t the only person involved.””

Before Jayden could respond, a shadow appeared behind them.

Mrs. Harper.

Her smile was calm.

Too calm.

“I was wondering when you two would start comparing stories.””

Jayden stepped forward.

Mia immediately became tense.

Mrs. Harper looked at the phone in Mia’s hand.

Then back at Jayden.

“You think a little video changes everything?””

Jayden stared at her.

“It proves the truth.””

Mrs. Harper laughed quietly.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“It proves you recorded a private classroom conversation.””

Mia’s face changed.

She hadn’t thought about that.

Mrs. Harper smiled.

“You kids always think technology makes you powerful.””

Then she whispered:

“But adults know how to use rules.””

She walked away.

Jayden watched her leave.

Mia looked terrified.

“What do we do?””

Jayden looked at the hallway.

At the students.

At the teachers.

At the system that was already deciding who they believed.

May you like

Then he answered.

“We find out what she’s hiding.””
