Chapter 11: The Betrayal Nobody Expected

Samuel Reed sat at the kitchen table while everyone watched him carefully.

Nobody trusted him.

Jayden especially.

The man had helped North Shore.

He had admitted it.

And now he appeared in the middle of the night claiming he was there to help.

That was not easy to accept.

“You need to explain,” Jayden said.

Samuel nodded.

“I do.””

He looked at Rosa.

“They found out you still had the files.””

Rosa’s expression hardened.

“How?””

Samuel looked down.

“Because I told someone.””

Jayden immediately stood.

“You told them?””

Mia grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

But Jayden didn’t move.

“Why would you do that?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Because I thought I could control it.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It did fifteen years ago.””

Jayden stared.

Samuel continued.

“When I left North Shore, I thought I had escaped.””

“You didn’t.””

“No.””

Samuel looked at the floor.

“They kept reminding me what I had done.””

Jayden understood.

Blackmail.

“They owned you.””

Samuel nodded.

“I tried to get evidence quietly.””

“By working with them?””

“Yes.””

“And now?””

“Now they know.””

Rosa looked at Samuel.

“You contacted me before?””

Samuel nodded.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Rosa’s face changed.

“I never received anything.””

Samuel looked confused.

Then he understood.

“Someone intercepted it.””

Jayden felt his anger shift.

There was another person.

Another layer.

Someone controlling information.

Mia spoke quietly.

“Who has access to all of this?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

A person inside the system.

The next morning, they made a decision.

They couldn’t wait anymore.

The evidence had to become public.

Jayden, Mia, and Samuel worked together.

They organized documents.

Videos.

Records.

Everything.

But before they could release it, Samuel stopped.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Jayden looked up.

“What?””

Samuel hesitated.

“The person who controls North Shore’s operation in Harbor Bay…”

He paused.

“It isn’t Daniel Voss.””

Everyone became still.

Jayden frowned.

“Then who?””

Samuel looked at Rosa.

“Your mother knows.””

Jayden turned.

“Mom?””

Rosa closed her eyes.

“I was hoping you would never meet this person.””

“Who?””

Rosa whispered:

“Victor Cole.””

Jayden froze.

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

His father’s older brother.

The uncle he had never met.

The uncle nobody talked about.

Jayden looked confused.

“My uncle?””

Rosa nodded.

“He disappeared years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed your father was destroying their future.””

Jayden felt the room spinning.

“You’re saying my own family is behind this?””

“No.””

Rosa looked at him.

“I’m saying someone from your family helped create it.””

Victor Cole.

The name appeared in old records.

Business partner.

Investor.

Former owner of several waterfront properties.

Then one event changed everything.

A disagreement between brothers.

Owen wanted to preserve the harbor.

Victor wanted expansion.

Money.

Growth.

Power.

They separated.

Victor left Harbor Bay.

Everyone thought he was gone.

But he wasn’t.

He had been building influence.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Just like North Shore.

Jayden stared at the documents.

“How did nobody know?””

“Because people only look for someone who is gone.””

Rosa’s answer was painful.

“They don’t look for someone who is watching.””

That afternoon, the evidence was almost ready.

Then every screen in the room went black.

The computers shut down.

The internet disappeared.

Mia checked.

“They hacked us.””

Samuel looked worried.

“That shouldn’t be possible.””

Jayden looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I separated everything.””

Mia looked at the screen.

“No.””

She pointed.

“They didn’t hack the computers.””

Everyone looked.

“They hacked the network.””

Jayden frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means they didn’t attack our devices.””

Mia swallowed.

“They attacked the place where information travels.””

The school.

The town.

The entire system.

They weren’t just watching them.

They were controlling what people could see.

That night, Jayden stood outside the seafood shop.

The harbor was quiet.

His father was still in custody.

His mother had spent years hiding the truth.

His uncle was connected to the enemy.

Everything he believed about his family had changed.

Mia walked beside him.

“You okay?””

Jayden laughed softly.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Good answer.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“Sometimes people pretend they’re okay because they think they have to.””

Jayden looked toward the water.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Mia was silent.

Then she said:

“Trust the people who stayed.””

Jayden looked at her.

She continued.

“Your mom stayed.””

She pointed toward the shop.

“Your dad stayed.””

Then herself.

“I stayed.””

Jayden smiled slightly.

For the first time in days.

Then his phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

IF YOU WANT YOUR FATHER TO GO HOME, MEET ME ALONE.

Jayden stared.

Mia saw his face.

“What?””

He showed her.

Her expression changed.

“No.””

Jayden looked toward the dark harbor.

“He knows.””

“Jayden.””

“He knows we found out about Victor.””

Mia shook her head.

“You can’t go.””

Jayden looked at the message.

May you like

Then at the place his family built.

“I have to.””
