Chapter 9: The Last Lie of the Mercer Family

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

The abandoned archive beneath the Mercer Foundation felt colder than before.

Thousands of files surrounded them.

Thousands of secrets.

But only one question mattered.

Who was the person Richard Mercer had been afraid of?

Logan Mercer stared at the old recording device.

His father’s voice still echoed in his mind.

The child was never the danger.

The danger was the person who wanted him.

For years, Logan had believed his father was responsible for the darkness surrounding Noah’s birth.

He had imagined Richard as the man who had controlled everything.

The man who stole a child.

The man who destroyed Marina’s life.

But now he realized something worse.

His father had been hiding from someone too.

Someone close enough to manipulate the entire Mercer family.

Someone powerful enough to erase records, silence witnesses, and keep the truth buried.

“Play it again.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Mr. Mercer?””

“Again.””

The recording restarted.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, then Logan has discovered the truth.””

Everyone listened carefully.

“I knew this day would come.””

“The child was never the danger.””

“The danger was the person who wanted him.””

“Because the person responsible for taking Noah was not my decision.””

“It was someone inside my own family.””

Again, silence.

Logan turned to Charles.

“You worked with my father every day.””

Charles nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Did he ever mention someone?””

Charles looked troubled.

“Not directly.””

“What does that mean?””

Charles walked deeper into the archive.

“It means your father became paranoid near the end.””

Logan followed.

“He stopped trusting people.””

“Because he knew someone betrayed him?””

Charles nodded.

“I think so.””

Marina hugged herself.

“Then why didn’t he tell anyone?””

Charles looked at her.

“Because Richard Mercer believed secrets were power.””

Logan looked around the archive.

That was exactly what this room represented.

His father had collected information on everyone.

Friends.

Business partners.

Enemies.

Even family.

But one question remained.

Who was powerful enough to make Richard afraid?

Thomas searched through the files.

Then stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Thomas pulled out a folder.

“This file was hidden.””

Logan walked over.

The folder had no name.

Only a date.

The date of Noah’s birth.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten note.

Logan read it.

His expression changed.

“What does it say?”” Marina asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he handed it to her.

Her hands shook as she read.

*The plan changed. The child was never supposed to leave with the Mercer family. Someone moved too early.*

Marina looked confused.

“What does this mean?””

Charles took the paper.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Logan looked at him.

“You know something.””

Charles stared at the handwriting.

“This was written by Richard.””

“Then explain.””

Charles swallowed.

“He believed someone changed the plan.””

“What plan?””

Charles hesitated.

“The original plan was not for Noah to be raised by the Mercers.””

The room went silent.

Marina’s face changed.

“Then what was supposed to happen to him?””

Charles looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

But Logan knew one thing.

Someone had wanted Noah somewhere else.

Someone had interfered.

Someone had changed the outcome.

Thomas continued searching.

Minutes passed.

Then he found another file.

This one had a name.

*Vanessa Cruz.*

Logan’s expression hardened.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Reports.

Private notes.

But one document immediately caught his attention.

A letter from Richard Mercer.

Addressed to Victor Cruz.

Logan read it.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Marina looked at him.

His face had lost all color.

“What does it say?””

Logan slowly lowered the paper.

“My father knew.””

Charles looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That Vanessa was involved.””

Everyone froze.

The letter explained that Richard had discovered Vanessa had been investigating Noah’s identity.

But the final line was what mattered.

*Keep Vanessa away from the child. She is not the person controlling this. She is only following instructions.*

Logan closed his eyes.

Vanessa had been guilty.

But she had not been the beginning.

She had been another piece.

Another person being controlled.

“Who gave her instructions?”” Thomas asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Marina looked toward the file.

“Victor?””

Charles shook his head.

“No.””

Logan looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because Victor was afraid.””

The realization moved through the room.

Everyone had assumed Victor was the mastermind.

But Victor had also been trapped.

Someone above him.

Someone with more influence.

Someone who could control Victor Cruz.

Logan suddenly remembered something.

A phrase Vanessa had used.

You need to be careful who you trust.

At the time, he thought she was manipulating him.

But maybe she was warning him.

Maybe she was afraid.

“Find Vanessa.””

Thomas looked surprised.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

They returned to the mansion.

But Vanessa was gone.

Her room was empty.

Her phone was disconnected.

Then Logan found something on the table.

A handwritten letter.

His name was written on the front.

He opened it.

The handwriting was hers.

Logan,

I know you will never forgive me.

Maybe you shouldn’t.

I made choices because I was scared.

I wanted the Mercer name.

I wanted the life I thought would make me important.

But I never understood how far this went.

I thought I was helping my father.

I thought I was protecting my future.

I was wrong.

The person behind everything is not who you think.

They have been watching you for years.

They were there when Noah came into your life.

They were there when you lost him.

And they are still close.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

*Ask yourself who benefited most from you never knowing the truth.*

Logan stared at the letter.

Who benefited?

Not Victor.

Not Vanessa.

Not even his father.

Someone else.

Someone who gained everything while Logan remained unaware.

Then Thomas rushed in.

“Mr. Mercer.””

“What?””

“We found something from the original hospital records.””

Logan turned.

“What?””

Thomas held a document.

“A witness statement.””

“From who?””

Thomas looked at Marina.

Her face changed before he even answered.

“The nurse who handled Noah’s birth.””

Marina stood.

“She’s alive?””

Thomas nodded.

“And she wants to meet.””

“Where?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“She gave us an address.””

Logan took the paper.

The location was outside the city.

A small retirement community.

“Why now?”” Logan asked.

Thomas answered:

“She said she has been waiting for someone from the Mercer family to come.””

The next morning, Logan, Marina, and Thomas arrived at the retirement home.

The woman waiting for them was old.

Her hands trembled.

Her eyes were tired.

But when she saw Marina, she immediately began crying.

“Oh my God.””

Marina froze.

The nurse reached for her hand.

“I thought I would never see you again.””

Marina started crying too.

Because sometimes recognition hurt more than proof.

“You remember me.””

The woman nodded.

“I remember everything.””

Logan stepped forward.

“Tell us what happened.””

The nurse looked terrified.

“I should have spoken years ago.””

“Why didn’t you?””

The woman looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of who?””

She looked directly at Logan.

And whispered:

“Your mother.””

The world seemed to stop.

Logan stared.

“My mother?””

The nurse nodded.

“Yes.””

Marina looked confused.

“But Richard Mercer was involved.””

The nurse shook her head.

“Richard was part of it.””

She looked at Logan.

“But the person who started it all…”

She took a trembling breath.

“Was Eleanor Mercer.””

Logan felt his heartbeat slow.

His mother.

A woman he remembered as kind.

A woman who had died years ago.

A woman he never imagined connected to any of this.

The nurse continued.

“She was the one who ordered the records changed.””

Nobody spoke.

“She was the one who arranged for the baby to disappear.””

Logan stepped back.

“No.””

The nurse looked at him sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

She reached into a drawer.

And removed one final photograph.

A photograph taken the night Noah was born.

It showed the hospital room.

Marina.

The newborn baby.

And standing beside the crib…

Eleanor Mercer.

Holding Noah.

Logan stared at the image.

His entire understanding of his family shattered.

Because the person behind the biggest secret of his life was not an enemy.

Not a stranger.

Not someone outside the family.

It was the woman who had raised him.

The woman who had taught him everything.

The woman he had loved.

And suddenly Logan understood why the truth had survived for so long.

May you like

Because nobody had been searching for a monster.

They had been searching for someone they could never imagine suspecting.
