Chapter 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything
The morning after the engagement disaster, the Mercer mansion looked like a place that had survived a storm.
The decorations were still there.
The flowers were still arranged perfectly.
The expensive crystal glasses remained untouched on the tables.
But the illusion was gone.
The mansion was no longer a symbol of wealth and perfection.
It was a house filled with unanswered questions.
Logan Mercer had not slept.
Not even for an hour.
He sat inside his private office overlooking Manhattan, watching the city slowly wake beneath a gray morning sky.
Usually, this view gave him a sense of control.
The endless buildings.
The endless movement.
The reminder that he had built something powerful.
But today, none of it mattered.
Because there was one thing money could never buy.
The lost time between a mother and her child.
On his desk sat three things.
A hospital photograph.
A threatening note.
And a security report showing every movement inside his home over the last year.
Logan stared at the photograph again.
It was old.
The edges were worn.
The image showed a newborn baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.
A tiny crescent-shaped birthmark was visible behind the baby’s ear.
The same mark Noah had.
Logan had noticed it many times.
During baths.
During bedtime.
During moments when Noah rested his head against his shoulder.
But he had never thought about where it came from.
He never questioned it.
Because why would he?
He was Noah’s father.
At least, that was what he had always believed.
A knock interrupted his thoughts.
“Come in.””
Thomas entered carrying a folder.
The security director placed it on the desk.
“We checked the hospital records.””
Logan immediately looked up.
“And?””
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation told Logan everything.
“Something is wrong.””
Logan opened the folder.
Inside were copies of documents from St. Catherine’s Hospital.
The official records stated that Marina Vale had given birth to a baby boy.
The baby had complications.
The baby had died.
But beneath the documents were additional notes.
Internal records.
Records that were never supposed to be seen.
“There was an administrative change,” Thomas explained.
Logan looked at him.
“What kind of change?””
“Names were altered.””
A cold feeling moved through Logan.
“Whose name?””
Thomas pointed to the papers.
“Originally, the newborn identification matched Marina’s information.””
He paused.
“Then twenty-four hours later, the file was updated.””
Logan’s eyes narrowed.
“Updated to what?””
Thomas placed another document in front of him.
The answer was there.
A different name.
A different guardian.
A different story.
But one signature appeared at the bottom.
Logan recognized it immediately.
His expression changed.
“No.””
Thomas said nothing.
Because he knew.
Logan knew that signature.
It belonged to someone who had worked closely with his family.
Someone who had access to private information.
Someone who could manipulate records without raising suspicion.
“Who authorized this?”” Logan asked.
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“The request came through a legal representative.””
“Name.””
Thomas took a breath.
“Victor Cruz.””
The room became silent.
Logan leaned back slowly.
Victor Cruz.
Vanessa’s father.
A man known throughout Manhattan’s elite circles.
A powerful attorney.
A man who had built a reputation on protecting wealthy clients and making problems disappear.
Logan had met him many times.
Dinner parties.
Charity events.
Family meetings.
He had trusted him.
And now his name was connected to the disappearance of Marina’s child.
“No,” Logan whispered.
Thomas looked at him.
“You don’t believe it?””
“I believe evidence.””
Logan closed the folder.
“But I also know people.””
His voice became colder.
“And Victor Cruz is not someone who makes mistakes.””
The sound of footsteps interrupted them.
Both men turned.
Marina stood at the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
She had changed out of her work uniform and was wearing simple clothes.
For the first time, Logan noticed how young she really was.
She was only twenty-one when Noah was born.
A girl who had lost her child.
A girl who had spent years searching.
A girl who had walked into his mansion every day just to be near the son she thought she would never have.
“Did you find something?”” she asked.
Logan looked at her.
He wanted to protect her.
But he also knew the truth would hurt.
“Yes.””
Marina stepped inside.
“What?””
Logan placed the document on the desk.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then froze.
She recognized the name immediately.
“No…”
Her voice barely existed.
“Victor?””
Logan watched her reaction.
“You know him?””
Marina nodded slowly.
“I saw him once.””
“When?””
“The night Noah disappeared.””
The answer shocked Logan.
“Tell me everything.””
Marina sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“I was at the hospital. I remember holding my baby.””
She closed her eyes.
“I remember his crying.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I remember thinking I would never forget that sound.””
Logan stayed silent.
“Then a nurse came in.””
Marina swallowed.
“She told me there were complications. She said they needed to move him.””
“And?””
“And I waited.””
Her voice broke.
“I waited for hours.””
The pain in her face was impossible to hide.
“No one came back.””
Logan felt anger rising.
“What happened next?””
“When I finally asked questions, everyone acted strange.””
She looked at him.
“Then Victor Cruz arrived.””
Logan’s expression hardened.
“What did he say?””
“He told me I needed to accept reality.””
Marina’s fingers tightened.
“He said some things were better left buried.””
The office felt colder.
“He threatened you,” Logan said.
Marina nodded.
“He told me if I kept searching, I would lose everything.””
Logan stood.
“Why didn’t you report him?””
Marina looked at him.
A painful smile appeared.
“To who?””
The question hit harder than an accusation.
“I was nineteen.””
She continued.
“I had no money. No influence. No one believed a young woman against someone like him.””
Logan looked away.
Because he understood that world.
A world where powerful people controlled the story.
A world where reputation could become a weapon.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
Logan opened it.
One photograph.
His blood froze.
It was a picture of Marina outside the Mercer mansion.
Taken yesterday.
Below it was a message.
Stop digging.
Logan’s jaw tightened.
Marina saw his expression.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He handed her the phone.
Her face went pale.
“They know.””
Logan looked at her.
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But her fear said something different.
She suspected.
And that scared him.
Because Marina had spent years running from someone.
Now that person knew she had found Noah.
Logan walked toward the window.
His mind moved quickly.
The threats.
The altered records.
The hidden surveillance.
The bottle in Vanessa’s possession.
The connection to Victor Cruz.
None of it was random.
Someone had built an entire system around hiding the truth.
Then Logan remembered something.
A conversation from months ago.
Vanessa had once asked strange questions about Noah’s birth.
Questions he thought were harmless.
Questions he had ignored.
When did Noah start sleeping through the night?
Did he have any unusual marks?
Did he have any relatives?
At the time, Logan thought she was simply trying to bond with his son.
Now, every memory looked different.
A knock came again.
This time, one of the household employees entered.
“Mr. Mercer?””
Logan turned.
“Yes?””
“There is someone downstairs asking to see you.””
“Who?””
The employee looked nervous.
“Mr. Victor Cruz.””
The room went completely still.
Marina stood immediately.
“No.””
Logan looked at her.
“He came here?””
She nodded.
“You need to be careful.””
Logan’s expression hardened.
For years, people had come into his life believing money gave them power over him.
They were wrong.
Because now he was not fighting for a company.
He was not fighting for a contract.
He was fighting for his son.
“Let him in.””
Marina looked at him.
“Logan—”
“I need answers.””
He walked toward the door.
“And I think he knows I’m looking.””
Downstairs, Victor Cruz waited inside the grand entrance hall.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Polished smile.
The kind of man who looked innocent even when standing in the middle of a disaster.
But Logan noticed something.
Victor’s confidence was different today.
There was tension behind his eyes.
Fear hidden beneath control.
That meant one thing.
Victor knew.
Logan stopped several feet away.
The two men stared at each other.
Then Victor spoke first.
“I heard last night was complicated.””
Logan said nothing.
Victor glanced around the mansion.
“Family situations can become emotional.””
Logan stepped closer.
“Where is Noah’s original hospital record?””
For the first time, Victor’s smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But Logan saw it.
And that was enough.
“You’re asking dangerous questions.””
Logan’s voice became ice.
“No.””
He looked directly at him.
“I’m asking questions that should have been answered years ago.””
Victor stared back.
Then quietly said:
“You have no idea what you’re about to uncover.””
Logan didn’t blink.
“Then I suggest you start explaining.””
Victor looked toward the staircase.
Toward the nursery.
Toward the place where Noah slept.
And in that moment, Logan understood something terrifying.
Victor Cruz was not afraid of losing his reputation.
He was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.
Because whatever happened years ago…
Was bigger than a stolen child.
May you like
It was a secret that powerful people had spent years protecting.
And Logan Mercer had just declared war on it.
