Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside the Walls

The blue-flower handkerchief sat inside a clear evidence bag on Logan Mercer’s desk.

A simple piece of fabric.

A faded pattern.

Something most people would overlook.

But to Marina, it was a ghost from the worst night of her life.

She sat across from Logan, staring at it as if it could somehow explain the years she had lost.

The mansion was surrounded by security now.

Every entrance was locked.

Every camera was being reviewed.

Every employee was being questioned.

But Logan knew something that made his anger burn even hotter.

The person who entered the nursery did not need to break in.

They already knew the house.

They knew the layout.

They knew where Noah slept.

They knew where the cameras were.

Someone inside had helped them.

And that meant the danger was closer than he thought.

“Marina.””

She looked up.

“Tell me everything about this handkerchief.””

Her fingers tightened.

“I bought it before Noah was born.””

“When?””

“The day I found out I was having a boy.””

Logan watched her carefully.

“You kept it all these years?””

She nodded.

“It was the only thing I had left.””

Her voice became softer.

“When they told me he died, they took everything from me.””

She looked down.

“The only thing I refused to lose was this.””

Logan felt a heavy weight in his chest.

He had spent years giving Noah everything.

The best doctors.

The safest home.

The most expensive toys.

But Marina had carried something different.

A memory.

A connection.

A piece of a life she never got to live.

“I don’t understand,” Logan said.

Marina looked at him.

“What?””

“If someone wanted to threaten you, why leave this?””

She looked at the handkerchief.

“Because they wanted me to know they remembered.””

The answer disturbed him.

Not because it was logical.

Because it was personal.

This was not someone trying to scare strangers.

This was someone who knew Marina.

Someone who knew what that piece of fabric meant.

Thomas entered the office.

“Mr. Mercer.””

Logan looked up.

“Did you find anything?””

Thomas placed a tablet on the desk.

“We checked every camera.””

“And?””

“There is a gap.””

Logan’s expression changed.

“A gap?””

“Seven minutes.””

Marina looked concerned.

“Seven minutes where?””

Thomas answered carefully.

“Between the west hallway camera and the nursery camera.””

Logan immediately understood.

“Someone disabled the system.””

Thomas nodded.

“From inside the mansion.””

The room went quiet.

Logan looked toward the door.

“How many people were inside?””

“Employees, security, and family members.””

“Family members?””

Thomas nodded.

“Vanessa was here earlier.””

Logan’s face hardened.

“She wasn’t arrested?””

Thomas hesitated.

“She left before the police arrived last night.””

Logan stood immediately.

“She left?””

“She claimed she was going to stay with friends.””

A cold expression crossed Logan’s face.

“She knew something was coming.””

Before Thomas could respond, Logan’s phone rang.

A private number.

He answered.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“Logan.””

He said nothing.

“I need to talk to you.””

“You should have thought about that before you lied.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa spoke quietly.

“I know what you found.””

Logan looked at Marina.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“That wasn’t a question.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

Logan’s voice became colder.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Did you enter my son’s room?””

Silence.

That silence was enough to make Marina cover her mouth.

Logan’s eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“I didn’t.””

“Then tell me who did.””

Another silence.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Your security chief.””

Logan froze.

He looked at Thomas.

The room changed instantly.

Thomas looked shocked.

“Me?””

Vanessa continued.

“He has been protecting the truth for years.””

Logan slowly lowered the phone.

“Where did you get that information?””

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“Because I saw the files.””

“What files?””

“The ones your father left behind.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Thomas looked angry.

“That’s a lie.””

Logan studied him.

Thomas had worked for him for years.

He had protected Noah.

He had been loyal.

But loyalty was exactly what made betrayal hurt the most.

“Open your records,” Logan said.

Thomas stared.

“Sir?””

“All of them.””

Thomas looked offended.

“You think I did this?””

Logan’s expression softened slightly.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I need to know.””

Thomas understood.

Because trust was no longer enough.

Not after everything.

He slowly handed over his access card.

“Search whatever you need.””

The investigation began immediately.

Every employee file.

Every access record.

Every private message.

Every security log.

The mansion that had once represented safety became a place full of suspicion.

Hours passed.

Then Thomas found something.

Not in his own records.

In someone else’s.

A maintenance employee.

A man named Daniel Reeves.

He had worked at the Mercer mansion for eight months.

“He wasn’t hired through our normal process,” Thomas said.

Logan looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“His background check was approved through a private recommendation.””

“Who recommended him?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa.””

Logan closed his eyes.

Another connection.

Another hidden piece.

“Find him.””

Thomas moved quickly.

But Daniel was gone.

His employee apartment was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

His vehicle was abandoned three blocks away.

Someone had prepared an escape.

Logan stood in the empty apartment, looking around.

It was almost completely clean.

Too clean.

No personal photos.

No documents.

Nothing that revealed who he really was.

Then Marina noticed something.

“Logan.””

He turned.

She was standing near a bookshelf.

Holding a small object.

A hospital bracelet.

Old.

Faded.

Her hands began shaking.

She looked at the name printed on it.

Then she looked at Logan.

“Noah.””

The bracelet had a baby’s name.

But beneath it was another marking.

A symbol.

The same symbol Logan had seen on his father’s old documents.

His stomach tightened.

“This was connected to my father.””

Marina nodded slowly.

“He was involved from the beginning.””

The discovery was devastating.

Because it meant the secret was not new.

It had existed before Logan even knew Noah existed.

That evening, Logan returned to the mansion.

Noah was sitting on the floor of the living room, playing quietly.

For the first time in days, the little boy looked peaceful.

Marina sat nearby.

Watching him.

Logan stopped at the doorway.

The sight affected him more than he expected.

A child.

A mother.

A family that had been separated.

And him standing in the middle of it all.

Not knowing where he belonged.

Noah looked up.

His eyes immediately found Logan.

“Daddy.””

The word was soft.

But it carried more meaning than anything else.

Logan walked over.

He sat beside him.

Noah touched his hand.

Then he pointed toward Marina.

“Mommy.””

Logan looked at both of them.

And he finally understood.

Family was not about paperwork.

It was not about names.

It was not about what powerful people decided.

It was about the people a child reached for when he was afraid.

Later that night, after Noah fell asleep, Logan returned to his office.

A message was waiting.

No sender.

No number.

Only a photograph.

His father.

Richard Mercer.

Standing outside St. Catherine’s Hospital.

The date was the night Noah was born.

Below the image was one sentence.

*Ask your father’s closest friend what really happened.*

Logan stared at the photograph.

His father’s closest friend.

There was only one person who fit that description.

A man who had been beside Richard Mercer for decades.

A man who had helped build the Mercer empire.

A man Logan trusted.

His own godfather.

And suddenly Logan realized the truth was moving closer.

The enemy was not outside the walls.

It had been inside all along.

The person who destroyed his family had been welcomed through the front door.

And tomorrow, Logan Mercer was going to confront him.
