Chapter 5: The Night Everything Was Stolen
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
The words Victor Cruz had just said remained hanging in the air.
Because Noah was connected to something that could destroy both families.
Logan Mercer had heard threats before.
He had heard competitors promise lawsuits.
He had heard enemies claim they would ruin him.
He had heard people use fear as a weapon.
But this was different.
This was not about business.
This was about a child.
His child.
Or at least the child he had loved, protected, and raised for two years.
Logan stared at Victor.
“Start talking.””
Victor remained silent.
“Now.””
The command echoed through the entrance hall.
Victor looked older suddenly.
The confident attorney who had walked into the mansion believing he could control the situation was gone.
What remained was a man carrying years of guilt.
“I cannot explain everything here.””
Logan’s expression hardened.
“You walked into my house.””
Victor looked at him.
“You brought the past into this house.””
Logan stepped forward.
“No. You did.””
The tension between them became unbearable.
Marina stood beside Logan, holding herself tightly.
She looked at Victor with a mixture of anger and pain.
“For years, I thought my baby died.””
Her voice trembled.
“For years, I buried my child.””
Victor looked away.
“And you knew.””
The accusation was quiet.
But it carried more weight than screaming.
“You knew he was alive.””
Victor closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked even Logan.
Marina covered her mouth.
A painful sound escaped her.
“Yes?””
She repeated the word.
“That’s all you have to say?””
Victor looked at her.
“I know what I did was unforgivable.””
“No.””
Marina shook her head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Her tears fell.
“You don’t get to stand here and admit you stole my son like it’s some mistake.””
Victor lowered his eyes.
“I was trying to protect him.””
“From what?””
Victor didn’t answer.
And that silence made Marina even angrier.
“From what?””
Her voice rose.
“From me?””
“No.””
Victor finally looked at her.
“Never from you.””
“Then from who?””
Again, silence.
Logan watched carefully.
Because Victor was hiding something.
Not because he wanted power.
Because he was afraid.
And fear was often more revealing than lies.
“Take us somewhere private,” Logan said.
Victor looked surprised.
“You trust me?””
“No.””
Logan’s eyes were cold.
“But I need answers.””
They moved to Logan’s office.
The room that had once been used for business negotiations now became the place where the Mercer family’s greatest secret would finally be uncovered.
Victor sat across from Logan and Marina.
For several seconds, he simply stared at the floor.
Then he began.
“Twenty-four years ago, before Vanessa was born, my family became involved with the Mercer family.””
Logan frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Victor looked at him.
“Your father.””
The mention of Richard Mercer changed the atmosphere.
Logan rarely spoke about his father.
Richard Mercer had been a complicated man.
A brilliant businessman.
A demanding father.
A person who believed winning mattered more than anything else.
“What does my father have to do with Noah?””
Victor took a breath.
“Everything.””
Logan’s jaw tightened.
Victor continued.
“Your father was involved in a private medical research investment.””
Logan stared.
“What kind of research?””
Victor hesitated.
“Genetic screening.””
The words sounded ordinary.
But the way Victor said them made them feel dangerous.
“Your father believed families with power should control their future.””
Logan’s expression darkened.
“My father had strange beliefs. That doesn’t explain my son.””
Victor nodded.
“No. But what happened later does.””
He looked at Marina.
“When you gave birth to Noah, the hospital discovered something unusual.””
Marina’s face changed.
“What?””
Victor looked at Logan.
“Noah carried a rare genetic marker.””
Logan frowned.
“Is that why?””
Victor shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
He paused.
“The marker itself was not dangerous.””
“Then why hide him?””
Victor’s answer came slowly.
“Because someone believed it could be valuable.””
The room became quiet.
Logan felt anger building.
“Who?””
Victor did not answer immediately.
That told Logan everything.
“Who?””
Victor finally whispered:
“Richard Mercer.””
Logan stood.
“No.””
The denial came instantly.
Not because he believed his father was innocent.
Because accepting it was too painful.
“My father was dead before Noah was born.””
“Yes.””
Victor looked at him.
“But his people were still active.””
Logan stared.
“What people?””
Victor looked toward the window.
“People who continued his work.””
The information was impossible to process.
Logan had spent years distancing himself from his father’s darker business practices.
He had believed he built his empire differently.
Cleaner.
Better.
But now he wondered how much of the past had followed him.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
Victor looked down.
“She was involved because of me.””
Marina looked confused.
“Your daughter?””
Victor nodded.
“When Vanessa was younger, she discovered information she should never have seen.””
Logan remembered Vanessa’s obsession with becoming part of the Mercer family.
The questions.
The interest in Noah.
The way she pushed for marriage so quickly.
Suddenly, those memories felt different.
“She knew,” Logan said.
Victor did not deny it.
“She knew there was something about Noah.””
“And she married me anyway.””
Victor looked at him.
“She believed becoming your wife would give her access.””
The room went silent.
Logan felt betrayed.
Not because Vanessa no longer loved him.
That had become obvious.
Because she had looked at his son and seen an opportunity.
A resource.
A secret.
Not a child.
Marina looked at Logan.
“I’m sorry.””
He turned.
“For what?””
“For bringing this into your life.””
Logan shook his head.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“You didn’t bring this.””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Noah did.””
Marina looked confused.
“He did?””
Logan nodded.
“He told the truth before any of us could.””
The thought was painful.
A two-year-old child who barely spoke had somehow exposed everything adults had spent years hiding.
Then Thomas entered quickly.
“Mr. Mercer.””
Logan turned.
“What happened?””
Thomas looked concerned.
“We found something else.””
He handed Logan a folder.
“This came from Vanessa’s personal storage.””
Logan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Many photographs.
Noah.
Marina.
The hospital.
Old documents.
Logan’s expression changed as he flipped through them.
“She was watching us.””
Thomas nodded.
“For months.””
Marina looked at the pictures.
Her face went pale.
There was one photograph that made everyone stop.
It showed Marina outside the hospital years earlier.
Holding newborn Noah.
And standing several feet away was Vanessa.
Watching.
Logan felt a wave of anger.
“You were there.””
Victor looked at the picture.
His face changed.
“Vanessa…”
The disappointment in his voice was unmistakable.
“She lied to me too.””
Logan looked at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Victor looked back.
“For the first time in years, yes.””
Before Logan could answer, another sound interrupted them.
A crash.
From upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Noah.
Logan moved first.
He ran toward the nursery.
Marina followed.
The door was open.
The room was dark.
The window was slightly open.
And Noah was standing beside his crib, frightened.
“Daddy.””
The word was barely a whisper.
Logan immediately picked him up.
“What happened?””
Noah pointed toward the window.
Then toward the floor.
A small object lay there.
A blue-flower handkerchief.
Marina stopped breathing.
She recognized it.
Her hand moved to her mouth.
“No…”
Logan looked at her.
“What?””
She picked it up carefully.
Her hands were shaking.
“This belonged to me.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Marina stared at the fabric.
“I had this the night Noah was taken.””
Logan looked toward the open window.
Someone had been inside.
Someone had entered his home.
Someone had reached Noah.
And they wanted them to know.
The past was not buried.
It was coming back.
Then Logan noticed something else.
A small piece of paper beneath the handkerchief.
He picked it up.
Three words were written.
Simple.
Terrifying.
*You should have forgotten.*
Logan held Noah closer.
His eyes became cold.
Whoever had started this had made one mistake.
They had underestimated him.
Because Logan Mercer was no longer searching for answers.
May you like
He was hunting the people who stole his son’s past.
And now they had given him a reason to fight.
