Chapter 4: The Man Who Buried the Truth
Victor Cruz had always been a man who understood the power of silence.
In courtrooms, silence meant control.
In negotiations, silence meant confidence.
In business, silence meant knowing something everyone else didn’t.
For decades, Victor had built his reputation by being the person powerful families called when a problem needed to disappear.
A scandal.
A lawsuit.
A secret.
He knew how to protect people.
He knew how to erase evidence.
And most importantly, he knew how to make others believe they had no choice but to stay quiet.
But standing inside the Mercer mansion that morning, Victor experienced something unfamiliar.
Uncertainty.
Because Logan Mercer was no longer the man he thought he knew.
The billionaire standing in front of him was not a businessman negotiating a deal.
He was a father.
And fathers were dangerous when someone threatened their children.
“Where is Noah’s original hospital record?”” Logan repeated.
Victor adjusted his jacket calmly.
“You are making accusations without understanding the situation.””
Logan stared at him.
“No.””
His voice was controlled.
“I am asking why a dead child has a living birth record.””
The words landed.
Victor’s expression barely changed.
But barely was enough.
Logan noticed.
He noticed everything now.
Every pause.
Every movement.
Every lie hiding between sentences.
“You have been investigating,” Victor said.
“That surprises you?””
“No.””
Victor looked around the mansion.
“I always knew you were intelligent.””
Logan stepped closer.
“Then you should know I will find the truth.””
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“Truth is complicated.””
“No.””
Logan shook his head.
“Truth is simple. People make it complicated when they’re trying to hide it.””
For the first time, Victor looked genuinely irritated.
“You think this is about a missing record?””
Logan said nothing.
Victor continued.
“You think you can open an old file, find a mistake, and suddenly everything makes sense?””
He lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Victor looked at him.
And for a moment, Logan thought he might.
But instead, Victor smiled.
A cold, careful smile.
“Ask yourself something, Logan.””
“What?””
“Why would someone go through so much trouble to hide a child’s identity?””
The question stayed in the air.
Logan felt a chill.
Because he had already been asking himself the same thing.
Why?
Why fake a death?
Why threaten Marina?
Why manipulate hospital records?
Why keep Noah away from his biological mother?
There had to be a reason.
And that reason was bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than Victor.
“You know why,” Logan said.
Victor looked away.
“I know that some truths destroy families.””
Logan’s expression hardened.
“My family is already destroyed.””
Victor looked back at him.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“Your family is only beginning to understand what happened.””
Before Logan could respond, Marina appeared at the top of the staircase.
She had heard enough.
The moment Victor saw her, his face changed.
Not much.
But enough.
Recognition.
Fear.
Anger.
All mixed together.
“Marina,” Victor said.
Her entire body froze.
She had not heard her name spoken by him in years.
“You remember me.””
Victor’s silence was the answer.
Logan looked between them.
“You two have met before.””
Marina slowly walked down the stairs.
Her eyes never left Victor.
“The night my baby disappeared.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“Be careful with your accusations.””
“No.””
Marina’s voice shook.
But she kept walking.
“I spent years wondering if I imagined it.””
She stopped near Logan.
“I wondered if I was crazy.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But I remember you.””
Victor said nothing.
“You told me to stop searching.””
The room became silent.
“You told me I would never find him.””
Victor looked at Logan.
“This woman is traumatized.””
Logan immediately stepped forward.
“Do not talk about her like she’s the problem.””
Victor looked surprised.
The protective tone was unmistakable.
Logan had chosen his side.
And Victor knew it.
“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.””
Logan’s eyes became colder.
“I’m involved because my son is involved.””
Victor looked toward the staircase.
Toward Noah’s room.
Then back at Logan.
“You still believe that boy belongs to you.””
The sentence changed everything.
Marina gasped.
Logan’s face went completely still.
“What did you say?””
Victor immediately realized his mistake.
But it was too late.
Logan heard it.
Not the words.
The meaning behind them.
“You said ‘that boy.’”
Victor recovered quickly.
“I meant nothing.””
“No.””
Logan stepped closer.
“You knew.””
Victor remained silent.
“You knew Noah existed.””
Another silence.
“You knew about Marina.””
Victor looked away.
That was the answer.
Logan felt something inside him break.
For two years, he had trusted these people.
Vanessa.
Victor.
Everyone around him.
And they had all known something he didn’t.
They had all been watching him raise a child while hiding the truth.
“Why?”” Logan asked.
The question came quietly.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just painful.
“Why would you do this?””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Because some things cannot be allowed to happen.””
Marina stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at her.
And for a second, Logan saw something unexpected.
Guilt.
“You were never supposed to find him.””
Marina’s face turned pale.
Logan moved instantly.
“What did you do?””
Victor did not answer.
That was when Thomas entered.
“Mr. Mercer.””
Everyone turned.
Thomas held a tablet.
“We found something.””
Logan looked at him.
“What?””
Thomas glanced at Victor.
Then back at Logan.
“A hidden file from the hospital database.””
Victor’s expression changed.
Thomas continued.
“It was deleted from the main system, but a backup server still had a copy.””
Logan took the tablet.
The screen showed a scanned document.
A patient transfer form.
The date matched Noah’s birth.
The child’s information was partially blocked.
But one line was visible.
Emergency relocation authorization.
Logan looked at Victor.
“What is this?””
Victor said nothing.
Thomas continued.
“There is also a payment record.””
“From who?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then answered.
“A private foundation.””
Logan’s eyes narrowed.
“Name.””
Thomas looked at the screen.
“The Cruz Family Foundation.””
The silence afterward was absolute.
Victor closed his eyes briefly.
The first crack in his perfect image.
Logan looked at him with disbelief.
“You paid them.””
Victor said nothing.
“You paid the hospital.””
Still nothing.
“You paid someone to erase my son’s identity.””
Victor finally spoke.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
Victor looked exhausted for the first time.
Not weak.
Not defeated.
Just tired.
“This was never about you.””
Logan froze.
“What?””
Victor looked at Marina.
“It was about protecting someone.””
Marina shook her head.
“Protecting who?””
Victor did not answer.
And that scared Logan more than anything.
Because Victor Cruz was a man who always had an answer.
A man who could talk his way through anything.
But now he was silent.
Because the person he was protecting mattered more than his own freedom.
Then Logan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
Logan answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
Vanessa.
“Logan.””
His expression changed.
“What do you want?””
Her breathing was uneven.
She sounded like someone who had lost control.
“I know Victor came to see you.””
Logan said nothing.
“You need to stop.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because if you keep searching, you will discover why Noah was taken.””
Logan’s grip tightened around the phone.
“And why was he taken?””
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the room go still.
“Because Noah was never supposed to become a Mercer.””
The call ended.
Logan slowly lowered the phone.
Marina looked terrified.
Thomas looked confused.
Victor looked defeated.
And Logan understood something.
The mystery was not about whether Noah was Marina’s son.
It was.
The evidence was already there.
The real mystery was why someone had gone to such extreme lengths to keep him away.
And why his own family had been chosen as part of the lie.
Logan turned toward Victor.
“Tell me everything.””
Victor stared at him.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Victor finally spoke.
“Years ago…”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“There was a reason your son was hidden.””
Logan waited.
Victor looked toward the nursery.
May you like
And the words that came next changed the entire story.
“Because Noah was connected to something that could destroy both of our families.””
