Chapter 9: The Room Nobody Knew Existed

Nobody spoke during the drive back.

The key sat in Ethan's hand.

Small.

Old.

Almost meaningless.

Yet it felt heavier than any contract he had ever signed.

"The truth is beneath the hotel.""

Those words repeated in his mind.

Sarah had left him a trail.

Not because she wanted him to follow.

Because she knew eventually he would need to.

When they reached the Grand Regent, it was nearly midnight.

The hotel was quiet.

Employees had gone home.

Guests slept.

But beneath the luxury floors existed another world.

Storage areas.

Maintenance tunnels.

Forgotten spaces.

Ethan stood with Marcus and Lupita near the basement entrance.

"You knew about this?""

Ethan asked Lupita.

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Nobody?""

"No one.""

They moved deeper underground.

The air became colder.

The walls changed.

Older.

The Grand Regent had been renovated many times.

But beneath everything was the original structure.

The beginning.

The place where Daniel's vision started.

They searched for nearly an hour.

Nothing.

Then Ethan noticed something.

A small metal door behind old equipment.

No handle.

Only a lock.

He held up the key.

Marcus whispered:

"No way.""

The key fit perfectly.

The door opened.

Inside was a hidden room.

A room untouched for years.

Dust covered everything.

Old files.

Photographs.

A computer.

And on the wall...

A picture of Sarah.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Not because she was there.

Because of what was written beneath it.

"She kept her promise.""

Ethan walked closer.

The words were written in Daniel Whitmore's handwriting.

Lupita covered her mouth.

"Oh my...""

Marcus looked shocked.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan didn't answer.

He was staring at the desk.

There was a folder waiting.

With his name on it.

ETHAN VANCE.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photographs.

Proof.

Proof of everything.

Victor Blackwell's entire operation.

But there was something else.

A video recording.

Dated three years ago.

The same month Sarah died.

Ethan stared at the screen.

"She recorded this.""

Marcus looked concerned.

"Do you want to watch it?""

Ethan couldn't speak.

He pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Then Sarah appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

Ethan's breath caught.

"Hi, Ethan.""

Three words.

And he almost broke.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

"If you are watching this, then I know you found the room.""

She paused.

"I hoped you never would.""

Ethan wiped his eyes.

"But I knew you.""

Sarah smiled sadly.

"You always search for answers.""

The video continued.

"I need you to understand something.""

"Everything I did was to protect you and Lily.""

A pause.

"But now you need to know the truth.""

Ethan leaned closer.

Sarah's expression changed.

More serious.

"Daniel Whitmore did not disappear.""

The room went silent.

Marcus looked shocked.

Lupita froze.

Sarah continued.

"He was killed.""

Ethan felt cold.

"And the person responsible...""

Sarah looked down.

Like saying the name hurt.

"Was someone we trusted.""

The video glitched.

Then the final words appeared.

A name.

A name Ethan never expected.

The screen went black.

And everyone in the hidden room stared at the same name.

Because it wasn't Victor Blackwell.

May you like

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone standing beside Ethan all along.
