Chapter 13: The Price of the Truth
Ethan did not remember leaving the hotel.
He did not remember the elevator ride.
He did not remember the sound of Marcus calling security or Lupita praying quietly behind them.
All he remembered was one thing.
Lily was gone.
The world that had always felt complicated suddenly became painfully simple.
The hotel.
The investigation.
Victor Blackwell.
The hidden files.
The decades of secrets.
None of it mattered.
Not without his daughter.
"Tell me exactly what happened.""
Ethan's voice was controlled, but everyone in the room could hear the fear underneath.
Marcus held the phone tightly.
"The nanny called. She said Lily was playing in the hotel garden area after lunch.""
"With who?""
"She said a woman approached.""
Ethan's expression changed.
"What woman?""
"We don't know yet.""
A cold feeling moved through him.
Victor.
It had to be Victor.
"He took her.""
Marcus hesitated.
"We don't know that.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Marcus.""
The single word carried years of friendship.
Years of understanding.
Marcus stopped arguing.
"We're checking cameras now.""
They rushed back to the security office.
The screens showed every hallway.
Every entrance.
Every exit.
Employees moved quickly, searching.
Then one camera froze.
A woman appeared.
Middle-aged.
Dark coat.
Walking beside Lily.
Not dragging her.
Not forcing her.
Lily was holding her hand.
Ethan stepped closer.
"No.""
Marcus looked at him.
"You know her?""
Ethan's face became pale.
Because he did.
Not personally.
But from the past.
The woman was Sarah's older sister.
Rebecca.
The woman Ethan had not seen in nine years.
The woman who disappeared from their lives after a painful family conflict.
"Why would Rebecca take Lily?""
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"Where is my daughter?""
The voice on the other end was calm.
Not Victor.
Rebecca.
"Ethan.""
His heart tightened.
"Where is Lily?""
"She's safe.""
"I want to speak with her.""
A pause.
Then a small voice.
"Daddy?""
Ethan closed his eyes.
"Lily.""
"I'm okay.""
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Where are you, sweetheart?""
"I don't know.""
Ethan swallowed.
"Put Rebecca back on.""
The phone changed hands.
"Ethan, listen to me.""
"Why did you take my daughter?""
"Because nobody else would listen.""
His anger rose.
"You kidnapped a child.""
"No.""
Rebecca's voice broke.
"I protected her.""
"From what?""
"From Victor.""
Ethan became silent.
"What do you know about Victor?""
Rebecca sighed.
"More than you think.""
Rebecca met Ethan at an abandoned church outside the city.
Marcus wanted to come.
Ethan refused.
Not because he trusted Rebecca.
Because if this was a trap, he needed Lily away from everyone connected to the hotel.
When he entered the church, he saw Lily sitting beside Rebecca.
The moment she saw him, she ran.
"Daddy!""
Ethan dropped to his knees and held her tightly.
He didn't care who was watching.
He didn't care about appearances.
For a few seconds, he was not a billionaire.
Not a businessman.
Not an owner.
He was simply a father who almost lost his child.
"I'm sorry," Lily whispered.
Ethan pulled back.
"You did nothing wrong.""
Rebecca watched quietly.
Then she spoke.
"Sarah would be proud of you.""
Ethan looked up sharply.
"Don't say her name.""
Rebecca accepted the anger.
"I deserve that.""
"Why did you disappear?""
The question had waited nine years.
Rebecca looked away.
"Because Sarah asked me to.""
Ethan froze.
"What?""
"Your wife knew what was coming.""
Rebecca sat down.
"She knew Victor was dangerous.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she knew you would fight.""
Ethan looked at Lily.
Everyone kept saying the same thing.
Everyone kept deciding what he could handle.
Rebecca continued.
"Sarah discovered something about Victor.""
"What?""
"Victor wasn't just trying to control hotels.""
She looked directly at Ethan.
"He was trying to control people.""
"How?""
"He collected secrets.""
Ethan frowned.
"Secrets?""
"Blackmail.""
The word hung in the air.
Rebecca continued.
"Politicians. Business owners. Executives.""
"Victor built power by finding weaknesses.""
"And Daniel?""
"Daniel found out.""
Ethan understood.
"That's why he had to disappear.""
Rebecca nodded.
"But Daniel wasn't the only person who knew.""
"Sarah.""
"Yes.""
"And you.""
Rebecca looked down.
"Yes.""
Ethan felt exhausted.
"So why take Lily?""
Rebecca's eyes filled with regret.
"Because Victor was getting desperate.""
She handed Ethan a small device.
"He knows you found the files.""
Ethan looked at it.
"What is this?""
"Proof.""
"Of what?""
"Of who has been working with him.""
Ethan pressed the device.
A recording appeared.
A familiar voice filled the room.
A voice Ethan recognized immediately.
The recording was from weeks earlier.
Victor Blackwell speaking.
And beside him...
Someone else.
Someone from inside his company.
Someone Ethan trusted.
"Who is that?"" Ethan whispered.
Rebecca looked at him.
"You already know.""
The recording continued.
"We need Ethan distracted.""
Victor's voice.
"He will find the files soon.""
The other person responded.
"Then we'll make sure he never gets the chance.""
Ethan stared.
Because the voice belonged to someone he had protected for years.
Someone who had always stood beside him.
May you like
Someone who had lied.
Again.
