Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Forgotten

The next morning, Ethan walked into the Grand Regent with a different purpose.

For years, he had entered hotels as an owner.

Checking numbers.

Reviewing operations.

Looking for weaknesses.

But now he entered searching for a ghost.

Noah Whitmore.

The boy Sarah protected.

The child who held the key to a secret powerful people wanted buried.

Marcus followed behind him.

"We need to be careful.""

Ethan looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because if Victor knows Noah is alive, he will move.""

Ethan stopped.

"Alive?""

Marcus became silent.

Ethan immediately noticed.

"You said you didn't know where he was.""

"I don't.""

"But you think he's alive.""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"There was never a confirmed death.""

That changed everything.

For fourteen years, the world believed Noah Whitmore disappeared.

But maybe he hadn't disappeared.

Maybe someone had hidden him.

Ethan spent the next several hours reviewing old records.

Employees.

Visitors.

Security footage.

Anything connected to Daniel Whitmore.

Most information had been removed.

Too cleanly.

Someone had erased history.

But one thing remained.

A name.

A former employee.

Thomas Reed.

Security supervisor.

Worked at the Grand Regent fifteen years ago.

Left suddenly.

No explanation.

Ethan searched deeper.

Thomas Reed had filed one unusual report before leaving.

A report about a visitor.

A young boy.

A woman named Sarah Vance.

And a warning.

"Unauthorized access requested by corporate investors.""

Marcus looked confused.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan shook his head.

"It means someone was trying to reach Noah.""

"Who?""

Ethan looked at the report.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Victor Blackwell.

Finding Thomas Reed wasn't easy.

He had disappeared from the industry.

No social media.

No public records.

No connection to hotels.

But Ethan had resources.

By evening, they found him.

A small house outside the city.

An older man answered the door.

When he saw Ethan, his expression changed.

"I knew this day would come.""

Ethan froze.

"You were expecting me?""

Thomas looked tired.

"Not you specifically.""

He looked at Marcus.

"But I knew someone connected to Daniel would eventually come.""

They entered the house.

Old photographs covered the walls.

Family.

Travel.

A simpler life.

Thomas poured coffee.

"I wondered if Daniel's dream survived.""

Ethan sat down.

"It did.""

Thomas smiled.

"Good.""

Then his expression became serious.

"But the truth didn't.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"What happened to Noah?""

Thomas stared at the table.

"Daniel found out Victor was planning something.""

"What?""

"Not just buying hotels.""

Thomas looked at Ethan.

"He was building control.""

"What does that mean?""

"He wanted to own enough companies that nobody could challenge him.""

Ethan nodded.

"And Noah?""

"Daniel kept evidence.""

Thomas continued.

"He knew Victor would come after him.""

"So he gave it to Noah.""

"Yes.""

"But why a child?""

Thomas sighed.

"Because nobody watches children.""

The answer disturbed Ethan.

"Sarah helped him escape?""

Thomas nodded.

"She took Noah away.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

Ethan frowned.

"But you know something.""

Thomas looked toward an old photograph on the wall.

A young boy.

"Noah was smart.""

"Smarter than people realized.""

"What are you saying?""

Thomas stood and opened a drawer.

He removed an old envelope.

"This was left for Sarah.""

Ethan's heart stopped.

"For Sarah?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you give it to her?""

Thomas looked ashamed.

"Because before I could, Victor's people came looking.""

Ethan took the envelope.

It had Sarah's name.

And beneath it:

If anything happens, give this to Ethan Vance.

His breathing stopped.

Sarah had prepared for this.

She knew one day he would find it.

With shaking hands, Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a small key.

And a note.

May you like

The note contained only six words.

"The truth is beneath the hotel.""
