Chapter 10: The Name Sarah Left Behind
The hidden room beneath the Grand Regent became completely silent.
The kind of silence that felt heavier than noise.
Ethan stood frozen in front of the old computer screen.
The video had ended.
The message had disappeared.
But the name remained burned into his mind.
The name Sarah had left behind.
The name nobody expected.
Marcus Hale.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Lupita looked between Ethan and Marcus, unable to understand what she had just witnessed.
Marcus looked like a man who had suddenly aged ten years.
"Ethan...""
Ethan raised his hand.
Not angrily.
Not aggressively.
Just enough to stop him.
Because if Marcus spoke now, Ethan wasn't sure he could listen.
The hardest betrayal wasn't always the one that came from an enemy.
Enemies were easy.
Enemies announced themselves.
They threatened you.
They attacked you.
They wanted you to know they were against you.
But Marcus...
Marcus had sat beside Ethan for eleven years.
He had attended Sarah's funeral.
He had held Lily when Ethan couldn't stop crying.
He had helped build the company.
He had been the person Ethan called when life became impossible.
And now Sarah's final message pointed directly at him.
"Ethan," Marcus whispered, "you have to let me explain.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Did you know about this room?""
Marcus swallowed.
"No.""
"Did you know Daniel was killed?""
A pause.
"No.""
"Did you know Sarah suspected you?""
Marcus looked down.
That was the answer.
Ethan stepped backward.
"You did.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I knew she was suspicious.""
The words felt like a knife.
"Why?""
Marcus looked at the floor.
"Because she found something.""
"What?""
"Evidence.""
Ethan stared at him.
"Evidence against you?""
Marcus didn't answer.
And that silence said everything.
The next morning, the entire executive floor felt different.
People noticed.
They noticed Ethan's expression.
They noticed Marcus was no longer walking beside him.
They noticed the two men who had always appeared united were suddenly separated.
Rumors spread quickly.
They always did.
But Ethan ignored them.
He sat in his office surrounded by documents from the hidden room.
Everything Sarah had collected.
Every piece of information she had hidden.
And every question she had left unanswered.
The more he read, the more confused he became.
Because the evidence against Marcus was not simple.
There were meetings.
Financial transfers.
Private conversations.
But there was no direct proof.
Nothing that showed Marcus personally harmed Daniel.
Nothing that explained why Sarah trusted him enough to keep him close.
Ethan knew one thing about Sarah.
She was not careless.
If she had suspected Marcus, she would not have left him near Ethan unless there was a reason.
Unless there was something Ethan didn't understand.
His phone rang.
An unknown number.
Ethan answered.
"Hello?""
A young man's voice responded.
"Is this Ethan Vance?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Noah.""
Everything stopped.
Ethan stood.
"Noah Whitmore?""
The voice became quiet.
"Yes.""
For a moment, Ethan couldn't speak.
The person everyone thought had disappeared was calling him.
The boy Sarah protected.
The missing son of Daniel Whitmore.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you.""
"Why?""
"Because if Victor finds me, people die.""
Ethan's expression changed.
"How did you get my number?""
A pause.
"Your wife gave it to me.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
Sarah.
Even after death, she was still moving pieces.
"When?""
"Three years ago.""
The answer shocked him.
"Before she died?""
"Yes.""
Ethan sat slowly.
"What did she tell you?""
Noah was silent.
Then he said:
"She told me that if anything happened to her, I should contact you only when you were ready.""
Ethan looked around the office.
"Ready for what?""
"The truth.""
Noah agreed to meet at a small café outside the city.
Ethan arrived alone.
Not because he didn't trust Marcus.
Not anymore.
But because he didn't know who he could trust.
The person waiting for him was not a child.
He was twenty-one years old.
A young man with dark hair, tired eyes, and the same serious expression Ethan had seen in the old photograph.
The boy had grown up.
But Ethan could still recognize him.
"Noah.""
The young man stood.
"Mr. Vance.""
"Call me Ethan.""
Noah nodded.
They sat.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Ethan asked the question that had been haunting him.
"Is Daniel alive when you last saw him?""
Noah looked down.
"No.""
The answer was quiet.
"But he wasn't killed by Marcus.""
Ethan looked up sharply.
"What?""
Noah shook his head.
"I know what Sarah's video said.""
"You saw it?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
"She gave me a copy.""
Ethan felt his heart race.
"Then why would she say Marcus's name?""
Noah looked at him.
"Because she didn't.""
Ethan froze.
"What do you mean?""
Noah pulled out his phone.
He showed Ethan a video file.
"Victor edited the footage.""
Ethan stared.
"No.""
"Yes.""
Noah pressed play.
The video was longer.
The version Ethan saw had been cut.
Sarah's final words were incomplete.
The missing part appeared.
Sarah looked into the camera.
"If you are watching this, then someone has shown you a false version of this recording.""
Ethan's breathing stopped.
Sarah continued.
"Marcus Hale is not the person who betrayed Daniel.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
A wave of relief mixed with anger hit him.
Someone had manipulated him.
Someone had used Sarah's words against him.
The video continued.
"But Marcus carries guilt because he knows the truth.""
Sarah looked directly at the camera.
"He helped me hide evidence.""
"And because of that, Victor has been watching him for years.""
The screen went dark.
Ethan sat silently.
Everything had changed again.
Marcus wasn't the enemy.
He was a prisoner of the same secret.
That night, Ethan returned to the hotel.
Marcus was waiting.
He looked exhausted.
"You know now.""
Ethan nodded.
"I know.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I should have told you.""
"Yes.""
"I was afraid.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Of Victor?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
"Then what?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Of losing Sarah's trust.""
Ethan didn't speak.
Marcus continued.
"She asked me to protect you.""
"And you thought hiding everything was protecting me?""
"No.""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"I thought I could control it.""
A bitter smile appeared.
"I was wrong.""
Ethan looked at his oldest friend.
For years, Marcus had carried the weight alone.
And now Ethan understood something.
Betrayal wasn't always someone leaving you.
Sometimes it was someone carrying your pain without letting you know.
But there was still one question.
"Where is Victor now?""
Marcus looked serious.
"He knows.""
"Knows what?""
"That Noah contacted you.""
The lights in Ethan's office suddenly flickered.
Then every computer screen went black.
A message appeared.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.
Ethan stared.
May you like
Victor was no longer hiding.
The war had begun.
