Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Ethan returned to the Grand Regent before sunrise.

Lily slept in his arms.

For the first time in days, he felt something close to peace.

But only for a moment.

Because the recording changed everything.

The betrayal was no longer hidden.

It had a voice.

A face.

A reason.

Marcus waited in the lobby.

When he saw Lily, relief crossed his face.

"You found her.""

Ethan nodded.

Then he looked at him.

"We need to talk.""

Marcus immediately understood.

"What happened?""

Ethan played the recording.

Marcus listened.

His expression changed.

Not because he recognized the voice.

Because he recognized the truth.

When the recording ended, Ethan asked:

"How long?""

Marcus looked confused.

"How long what?""

"How long did you know?""

Marcus shook his head.

"I don't.""

"Ethan...""

"Don't lie to me.""

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Marcus looked at the floor.

"I didn't know about the recording.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Silence.

Then Marcus finally said:

"Three months.""

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

"You knew someone inside was working with Victor.""

"Yes.""

"And you didn't tell me.""

"I was trying to find proof.""

"You let my daughter become a target.""

Marcus looked devastated.

"I never thought he would come after Lily.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"That's your mistake.""

A pause.

"You thought Victor had limits.""

Marcus looked away.

"But he doesn't.""

The traitor was revealed later that day.

Not Marcus.

Not Lupita.

Not anyone Ethan suspected.

It was Daniel Cross.

The company's chief financial officer.

A man who had worked with Ethan since the early years.

A man who had managed billions of dollars.

A man Ethan once considered family.

Security found the evidence.

Payments.

Secret accounts.

Messages.

Everything.

Daniel Cross had been working with Victor for years.

But the reason was not greed.

It was fear.

When Ethan confronted him, Daniel looked exhausted.

"Do you know what Victor does to people who refuse him?""

Ethan said nothing.

"He destroys them.""

"You destroyed everyone else first.""

Daniel looked down.

"My daughter was sick.""

The words stopped Ethan.

"What?""

"Victor paid for her treatment.""

Silence.

Daniel continued.

"I owed him.""

"And he used that.""

"Yes.""

Ethan understood.

Victor did not create loyalty.

He created desperation.

He found people's weakest moments.

Then he owned them.

"Did you help him kill Daniel Whitmore?""

Daniel's face changed.

"No.""

"Did you help him attack Sarah?""

Another silence.

Then:

"Yes.""

Ethan felt anger rise.

"Why?""

"Because Sarah was getting too close.""

"To what?""

Daniel looked at him.

"The truth about Victor's biggest secret.""

"What secret?""

Daniel whispered:

"Victor didn't build his empire.""

"He stole it.""

That evening, Ethan finally had everything.

The files.

The evidence.

The recordings.

The witnesses.

Enough to destroy Victor Blackwell.

But something bothered him.

Victor had always been careful.

Too careful.

There was still something missing.

Then Noah called.

"Ethan.""

His voice was urgent.

"You need to leave the hotel.""

"Why?""

"Because Victor wanted you to find the evidence.""

Ethan froze.

"What?""

"He knew you would.""

"Then why?""

"Because the files are not the real target.""

Ethan looked around.

"What is?""

Noah answered:

"The people who can prove they are real.""

Ethan understood.

Witnesses.

Everyone connected to Daniel.

Everyone who could testify.

Victor wasn't trying to steal the evidence.

He was trying to erase everyone who could use it.

Suddenly, alarms began ringing throughout the hotel.

People screamed.

Security rushed.

Smoke filled the lower floors.

A fire.

Ethan grabbed Lily.

"Everyone out!""

The chaos spread.

Guests ran.

Employees helped each other.

And in the middle of it all, Ethan saw him.

Victor Blackwell.

Standing near the entrance.

Watching.

Not running.

Not hiding.

Smiling.

Ethan walked toward him.

Security tried to stop him.

He didn't care.

"You wanted me to see you.""

Victor smiled.

"I wanted you to understand.""

"Understand what?""

Victor stepped closer.

"That people like you always believe truth wins.""

A pause.

"But truth is only useful if people survive long enough to tell it.""

Ethan stared at him.

"You killed Daniel.""

Victor smiled.

"I finished what others started.""

"What does that mean?""

Victor looked toward Marcus.

Then toward the burning hotel.

May you like

"Ask your friend.""

And then he disappeared into the crowd.
