Chapter 9: The Enemy I Never Saw Coming

After leaving my mother’s house, Daniel and I drove without speaking.

There were too many things to say.

Too many things that couldn’t be fixed with one conversation.

Finally, he pulled over.

“We need to talk.””

I stared outside.

“About what?””

“About us.””

I almost smiled.

“Is there still an us?””

His face fell.

“I know I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

“I know I failed you.””

“Yes.””

“But I want to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel, you spent years asking me to be patient.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“I spent years waiting for you to choose me.””

His eyes became wet.

“I know.””

“And now you’re choosing me because your family betrayed you too.””

He looked down.

That silence told me everything.

Maybe he loved me.

But love after destruction felt different.

“I don’t know if I can trust you.””

“I understand.””

That answer surprised me.

Because the old Daniel would have defended himself.

The new Daniel accepted the pain.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me today.””

He took a breath.

“I’m asking you to let me prove I’m different.””

I looked at him.

Then nodded once.

“Then start by helping me find the truth.””

“I will.””

That night, we returned home.

But someone had already been there.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

“Stay behind me.””

For the first time, I didn’t argue.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Until we reached my office.

Every file was gone.

Every document.

Every investigation report.

Everything.

Except one thing.

A single photograph on my desk.

My childhood picture.

With a message written across it.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST ALONE.

Daniel picked up the photo.

His face became dark.

“This ends now.””

I looked around the destroyed office.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“This started thirty years ago.””

I picked up the photograph.

“And now it’s coming for my daughter.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice responded.

“You finally understand.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who are you?””

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

“Then what should I ask?””

The man paused.

“Ask why your husband never told you the truth about his father.””

I looked at Daniel.

He went still.

“What does that mean?””

The man laughed.

“You really thought Daniel knew nothing?””

I looked at my husband.

“Daniel?””

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Vivienne…”

The call ended.

I stared at him.

“Tell me.””

He didn’t speak.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he whispered:

“My father told me something years ago.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He told me never to look into Adrian Vale’s death.””

I felt the room spinning.

“You knew there was a connection?””

“I knew there was a secret.””

“And you never told me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I didn’t know it was about you.””

I stepped back.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Vivienne—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone knew pieces of my life except me.””

I looked at the man I married.

The man I wanted to trust.

“The question is…”

My voice became quiet.

“Are you finally telling me everything?””

Daniel looked devastated.

Because he knew the answer.

No.

Not yet.

And somewhere out there, someone was watching.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who had been waiting thirty years for me to uncover it.

May you like

And now that I had…

They were ready to make sure I never revealed it.
