Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside The Family

The meeting with Richard Sterling happened that night.

Daniel’s father chose the Sterling headquarters instead of the mansion.

I understood why.

The mansion was where they performed.

The office was where they made decisions.

The building stood thirty floors above the city, covered in glass and steel.

A monument to the Sterling empire.

But I knew something about empires.

They always looked strongest right before they collapsed.

Richard Sterling entered the conference room alone.

He was older than I expected.

Tired.

Not weak.

Just tired.

His eyes immediately went to the documents on the table.

Then to me.

“You’re Vivienne.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He studied me.

“My son chose well.””

The statement surprised me.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Dad.””

Richard ignored him.

“I heard what happened at the wedding.””

I waited.

“I heard my wife accused you.””

“Yes.””

“And I heard my daughter supported her.””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“You should have stopped it.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

A strange silence followed.

Because Richard did not defend them.

That alone told me something.

He knew.

“How long have you known?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Known what?””

“That something was wrong inside Sterling Holdings.””

His expression changed.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you investigate?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because sometimes the truth destroys more than lies.””

I almost laughed.

“That sounds like something people say when they are afraid of the truth.””

Richard looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“You’re right.””

Daniel looked surprised.

His father continued.

“I made mistakes.””

That was unexpected.

The Sterling family admitting mistakes felt almost impossible.

“I built a company,” Richard said.

“But I neglected the people inside it.””

His eyes moved toward the documents.

“Three years ago, I noticed money disappearing.””

“And?””

“I confronted someone.””

“Who?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Your mother-in-law.””

The room became silent.

“But she denied everything.””

“And you believed her?””

Richard looked away.

“I wanted to.””

There it was again.

The same weakness.

Wanting someone to be innocent so badly that you ignore the possibility they are not.

I understood.

Because I had done the same with Daniel.

“Who else was involved?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation worried me.

“Richard.””

He finally spoke.

“There is someone else.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

Richard looked at the closed conference room door.

Then quietly said:

“Someone you would never suspect.””

The door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Eleanor stood there.

And beside her was a man I had never seen before.

Richard went pale.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Richard.””

Daniel stood immediately.

“Who is he?””

Richard did not answer.

Because he didn’t have to.

The fear on his face said everything.

I looked at the stranger.

And somehow, I knew.

This was not a family problem anymore.

This was something much bigger.

The man stepped into the room.

“I think it’s time we stopped pretending.””

Eleanor stood beside him.

Together.

United.

After everything.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Mom?””

She looked at her son.

And for the first time, there was no guilt.

No hesitation.

Only calculation.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

Because I knew that tone.

That was not the voice of someone apologizing.

That was the voice of someone delivering a warning.

Eleanor smiled.

“Your wife found the truth.””

She looked at me.

“But she doesn’t know the whole truth.””

The stranger placed a folder on the table.

And pushed it toward Daniel.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

Daniel opened it.

Then froze.

His face lost all color.

“Impossible…”

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the pain in his eyes told me my entire world was about to change.

“Vivienne…”

His voice shook.

“This is about you.””

I stared at the paper.

May you like

And realized the Sterling family’s biggest secret had never been about money.

It had been about me.
