Chapter 10: The Husband Who Carried The Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of the threats.
Not because someone had broken into our home.
Not because my entire identity had been rewritten in less than a week.
I stayed awake because of one question.
How much had Daniel known?
The man lying beside me was someone I had loved for years.
Someone I had trusted with my heart.
Someone who knew every scar I carried.
And yet, there was a part of my life he knew before I did.
A secret about my own father.
My own family.
My own past.
I watched the darkness outside the window until sunrise.
When Daniel finally woke up, he immediately looked at me.
He knew.
He knew I had not forgiven him.
“Vivienne.””
I didn’t answer.
He sat up slowly.
“I owe you the truth.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
He swallowed.
“Years ago, before we got married, my father called me to his office.””
I stayed silent.
“He told me there were things about Sterling Holdings I didn’t understand.””
“Things like Adrian Vale?””
His expression tightened.
“Yes.””
“And?””
“He told me Adrian’s death was complicated.””
I laughed quietly.
“Complicated.””
Daniel looked down.
“He told me there were people who wanted the company. People who would destroy anyone who got too close.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was twenty-seven.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He closed his eyes.
“I believed him because he was my father.””
There it was.
The same mistake everyone made.
Trusting family without questioning.
“I didn’t know you were connected,” he continued.
“But you knew someone was hiding something.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
His eyes lifted.
“I loved you.””
I looked away.
“Love doesn’t excuse everything.””
“I know.””
That was the difference.
Before, Daniel would have defended himself.
Now he accepted the blame.
But acceptance did not erase damage.
“Why didn’t you tell me when you found out?””
He was quiet for a long time.
Then:
“Because I was afraid.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I stared at him.
“You already did.””
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
Daniel looked broken.
“I thought if I could keep the past buried, we could have a normal life.””
I shook my head.
“There was never a normal life.””
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
“There was only a life built on things I didn’t know.””
Daniel looked at my belly.
His expression softened.
“Our daughter…”
I looked at him.
“She deserves the truth.””
“Yes.””
“And she deserves parents who don’t hide things from her.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
I stood.
“Then prove it.””
“How?””
“Help me destroy the people who did this.””
For a moment, Daniel looked surprised.
Then he nodded.
“I will.””
We spent the entire morning rebuilding the investigation.
The first thing I did was make a list.
Not suspects.
Facts.
That was how I worked.
Emotion could create mistakes.
Facts created patterns.
At the top of the page:
1. Adrian Vale died thirty years ago. 2. Sterling Holdings experienced financial irregularities three years ago.
3. Someone threatened me after I discovered the investigation. 4.
Someone knows about my identity. 5. Someone is protecting a decades-old crime.
Daniel studied the list.
“You think these are connected.””
“I know they are.””
“How?””
“Because criminals repeat patterns.””
I pointed to the documents.
“The person stealing from Sterling Holdings now is likely connected to the person who covered up Adrian’s death.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then where do we start?””
“Your family.””
His expression tightened.
I noticed.
“You still hesitate.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“I don’t know how to stop seeing them as my family.””
I softened slightly.
“That’s because they are.””
He looked at me.
“But family can still hurt you.””
He nodded.
“I’m learning.””
That afternoon, we received an unexpected visitor.
Richard Sterling.
He arrived alone.
No security.
No assistant.
No performance.
Just a tired man carrying decades of regret.
“I know you don’t want to see me,” he said.
I stood near the door.
“You’re right.””
He accepted that.
“I deserve it.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Dad, why didn’t you tell us?””
Richard looked older than yesterday.
“Because I was a coward.””
The answer stunned both of us.
He continued.
“I spent thirty years protecting the Sterling name.””
He looked around our modest home.
“And I lost everything that mattered.””
I crossed my arms.
“What do you want?””
“To give you the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone suddenly wants to give me the truth after hiding it.””
Richard looked down.
“I know.””
He handed me a small envelope.
“This belonged to Adrian.””
My fingers froze.
“Where did you get this?””
“Your mother gave it to me.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My father’s handwriting.
A man I had never met.
But somehow, the words felt familiar.
If anything happens to me, the person responsible will not be someone outside the company.
I kept reading.
The danger is already inside.
My heart tightened.
There was a name missing.
The letter ended there.
“Why did he stop?””
Richard’s face changed.
“Because someone found him.””
“Who?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I think you already know.””
Before I could respond, the front door opened.
A familiar voice came from behind us.
“Actually, I think I can answer that.””
We turned.
Eleanor stood there.
But she wasn’t alone.
Police officers were behind her.
And she was holding a folder.
Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
“Vivienne Bennett Sterling.””
The officer stepped forward.
“You are under investigation for theft and financial crimes.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Eleanor smiled.
“The truth is finally coming out.””
I stared at her.
“You’re framing me.””
She tilted her head.
“No.””
She looked at the officers.
“I’m saving my family.””
May you like
And I knew.
The war had officially begun.
