Chapter 5: The Daughter They Tried To Use
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
By Monday morning, rumors had already started spreading.
Not about the missing ring.
Not about Chloe’s accusation.
About me.
That was how the Sterling family operated.
They could not erase facts.
So they changed the story.
According to their version, I was a bitter outsider trying to destroy a wealthy family.
A woman who married Daniel and secretly investigated them.
A woman who wanted revenge.
They never mentioned the years I spent being insulted.
They never mentioned the humiliation.
They never mentioned that I had protected them.
People only believed the version they heard first.
That was why I had learned never to fight with emotions.
I fought with evidence.
I sat at my desk in our townhouse, reviewing every file I had collected.
Daniel stood by the window.
He had barely slept.
Neither had I.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His question was quieter this time.
Not angry.
Just broken.
I closed the folder.
“I told you why.””
“No.””
He turned around.
“You told me why you stayed silent about the investigation.””
He walked closer.
“But why didn’t you trust me?””
That question hurt more.
Because it was true.
“I wanted to.””
He looked down.
“But?””
I swallowed.
“But every time I needed you to stand beside me, you asked me to understand them.””
His face fell.
“I thought I was keeping our marriage together.””
“You were keeping everyone else comfortable.””
The words landed.
Because he knew.
I continued.
“You wanted me to be patient because patience was easier than confrontation.””
Daniel sat down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.””
A simple sentence.
Three words.
The words I had wanted for years.
But somehow, they did not fix everything.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
He looked surprised.
“But?””
“But sorry doesn’t erase what happened.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
That was the first time he didn’t try to argue.
The first time he accepted responsibility.
Maybe people could change.
Maybe.
But change was something I would believe after seeing it.
Not before.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice whispered.
“Vivienne?””
“Yes?””
“You need to stop.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
“You know exactly what this is about.””
I stood.
“Who are you?””
The line went silent.
Then:
“You found the money trail. Congratulations.””
My heart tightened.
“But you haven’t found the reason.””
Before I could respond, the call ended.
Daniel saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I looked at the phone.
“Someone knows.””
“About the investigation?””
“Yes.””
His face became serious.
“Are you in danger?””
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to pretend everything was fine.
But I was done pretending.
“I don’t know.””
That afternoon, I received another surprise.
A package arrived.
No sender.
Inside was a photograph.
My hands went cold.
It was taken outside a hospital.
Eight months earlier.
The day I found out I was pregnant.
The day Daniel and I celebrated.
The day I thought my life was finally becoming perfect.
On the back of the photograph were five words.
WE KNOW ABOUT HER.
My daughter.
My unborn child.
Someone was threatening my baby.
And that was the moment something inside me changed.
I had tolerated insults.
I had survived humiliation.
I had forgiven betrayal.
But nobody threatened my child.
Nobody.
Daniel found me standing in the kitchen holding the photograph.
“What happened?””
I handed it to him.
His expression changed immediately.
“Where did this come from?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked at me.
“Vivienne.””
For the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.
Not fear of scandal.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of losing us.
“I’ll protect you.””
I stared at him.
“You should have done that before.””
The words hurt him.
But they were true.
He nodded.
“I know.””
Then he took out his phone.
“What are you doing?””
“Calling someone.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if someone in my family is willing to threaten my child…”
He looked at the photograph again.
“…then I want every person responsible exposed.””
I watched him make the call.
And for the first time, I wondered if maybe Daniel Sterling was finally becoming the man he promised he would be.
But I also knew something else.
The person behind this was still out there.
May you like
And whoever it was had just made the biggest mistake of their life.
They had threatened the one thing I would never stop fighting for.
