Chapter 11: The Woman They Tried To Arrest
The police station smelled like cold coffee and old paperwork.
I sat across from the detective assigned to my case.
Detective Harris.
He looked tired.
Not cruel.
That mattered.
Because I had learned something about powerful families.
They didn’t need everyone to believe them.
They only needed enough people to create doubt.
“We received a complaint from Sterling Holdings,” Detective Harris said.
“About me.””
“Yes.””
“What exactly am I accused of?””
He opened the file.
“Unauthorized access to company records. Theft of confidential documents. Possible financial manipulation.””
I almost smiled.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“They accused me of the exact crimes I was investigating.””
He watched me carefully.
“You’re saying this is retaliation?””
“I’m saying someone is trying to make me look guilty before I expose them.””
He looked down at the file.
“There is evidence.””
“What evidence?””
He hesitated.
Then turned the papers toward me.
Bank records.
Access logs.
Security footage.
My stomach tightened.
Because some of it looked real.
My name appeared on company documents.
My access information was there.
My fingerprints were recorded.
But I knew something.
Evidence could be created.
That was the first lesson in investigations.
The truth was not always what was documented.
“Someone planted this.””
Detective Harris studied me.
“You’re very sure.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m pregnant.””
He frowned.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“But it proves something about motive.””
I pointed at the documents.
“If I was stealing from Sterling Holdings, why would I risk everything while eight months pregnant?””
He didn’t answer.
Because it was logical.
Not impossible.
But logical.
The door opened.
Daniel entered.
My heart moved before my mind could stop it.
Because despite everything…
Seeing him still mattered.
“I’m here to give a statement.””
Detective Harris looked surprised.
“You’re Mr. Sterling?””
“Yes.””
“And your relationship to the accused?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“My wife.””
The word felt strange.
Beautiful.
Painful.
“I want to state clearly that Vivienne did not commit these crimes.””
Detective Harris looked at him.
“You’re willing to testify against your own family?””
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
That moment mattered.
Not because it fixed everything.
It didn’t.
But because Daniel finally chose truth over comfort.
Later that day, we discovered the worst part.
The evidence against me had been submitted by someone inside my own home.
The security footage showed a person entering our office.
Someone wearing a jacket.
Someone hiding their face.
But the time stamp revealed something.
They used a key.
Our key.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No.””
I watched his face.
“What?””
He looked sick.
“My mother had access.””
The betrayal on his face was painful to watch.
Not because I felt sorry for Eleanor.
Because I knew what it meant to realize your family was capable of hurting you.
“She wanted you blamed.””
Daniel nodded.
“But why?””
I looked at the footage.
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
I paused.
“Something she doesn’t want anyone to know.””
That night, we returned home.
Richard was waiting.
He looked exhausted.
“I found something.””
I immediately became alert.
“What?””
He placed an old photograph on the table.
My father.
Adrian.
Richard.
And another person.
A woman.
I picked it up.
“Who is she?””
Richard’s face became serious.
“Her name was Margaret.””
“Who was she?””
“She was the original investor in Sterling Holdings.””
I frowned.
“I thought you and Adrian founded it.””
“We did.””
“Then why wasn’t she mentioned?””
Richard looked away.
“Because she disappeared.””
My stomach tightened.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before Adrian died.””
The room went quiet.
Another missing person.
Another secret.
Another piece of history buried.
“Why are you showing me this?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because Margaret had a daughter.””
My blood turned cold.
“And?””
Richard whispered:
“Her daughter is Eleanor.””
I stared.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The impossible suddenly became possible.
Eleanor wasn’t just connected to Sterling Holdings.
She had a personal reason.
A hidden history.
A reason to destroy evidence.
A reason to control the company.
Daniel sat down heavily.
“My entire life…”
Richard looked at his son.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is sorry.””
Nobody spoke.
Because he was right.
Sorry had become the easiest word in the Sterling family.
But it changed nothing.
That night, another message arrived.
Not from an unknown number.
From Eleanor.
A simple text.
COME TO THE OLD STERLING PROPERTY ALONE.
I showed Daniel.
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“She wants you isolated.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t go.””
I stared at the message.
“She knows something.””
“So do we.””
“But she has answers.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Vivienne.””
I looked at him.
“I spent my entire life searching for where I came from.””
My voice softened.
“I’m not running now.””
He understood.
Because he knew me.
Finally.
“Then I’m coming with you.””
I almost refused.
But I stopped.
Because maybe trust wasn’t about believing someone had never hurt you.
Maybe trust was about seeing whether they would stand beside you after they did.
“Okay.””
We drove to the old Sterling property at midnight.
The abandoned building sat outside the city.
Broken windows.
Empty halls.
A place forgotten by everyone.
Except Eleanor.
She was waiting inside.
“You came.””
I looked around.
“What do you want?””
She smiled.
“To tell you the truth.””
I laughed.
“Your family has a strange relationship with that word.””
Her smile disappeared.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“Aren’t you?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“You don’t know what your father did.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“Adrian Vale wasn’t the innocent man everyone believes he was.””
The air changed.
“What are you saying?””
She whispered:
“The man you’ve spent your life searching for…”
May you like
A pause.
“He destroyed my family first.””
