Calm

Chapter 9: The Money Trail

Daniel arrived at my house forty minutes later.

He carried a laptop, a small envelope, and the expression of a man who had finally realized the ground beneath him was collapsing.

Jonathan opened the door.

"Come in, Daniel.""

My son walked into the living room.

He looked at me but didn't approach.

"Mom, I'm sorry.""

I gestured toward the chair.

"Sit down. Tell us what you found.""

He placed the laptop on the coffee table.

"I was looking for the original employment agreement Richard promised me. I thought if I could find it, I might understand what was happening.""

"And you found Tiffany's accounts?""

He nodded.

"She had a separate email account connected to the business records. I didn't know about it.""

Jonathan immediately interrupted.

"Before we continue, I need to ask how you accessed these records.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"The laptop was at home. Tiffany had left her account open.""

"Did you have permission to access it?""

"No.""

Jonathan closed his notebook.

"Then we need to be careful. Don't copy or distribute anything further. I'll determine the appropriate lawful steps. If you already have documents, preserve the device and don't alter anything.""

Daniel nodded.

"I understand.""

I looked at my son.

"Why were you looking for the employment agreement?""

He stared at the floor.

"Because Richard told me this morning that the job offer was being withdrawn.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because the investors are asking questions about the money. He says I'm responsible for making the family situation public.""

I leaned forward.

"Did he threaten you?""

Daniel nodded.

"He said I would owe him for the time and resources he invested in preparing the position.""

"Did you sign anything?""

"No. Not the final agreement.""

Jonathan asked, "Did you receive any money from Sterling Events Consulting?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How much?""

"Five thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

"What for?""

"He called it a signing bonus.""

"Did you tell me?""

"No.""

"Where is it now?""

"Still in my account.""

Jonathan wrote something down.

"Don't spend it. We'll need the full transaction history and the agreement associated with that payment.""

Daniel nodded.

Then he opened the laptop.

"There's something else I need you to see.""

He turned the screen toward us.

A spreadsheet contained several transfers between accounts.

The dates stretched over three months.

Some payments were labeled as wedding coordination.

Others were described as event management, vendor adjustments, and consulting fees.

I recognized several amounts.

Four thousand dollars.

Six thousand five hundred.

Three thousand two hundred.

Money I had believed was going directly to suppliers.

"Are these payments from my account?"" I asked.

Daniel nodded.

"Some are. Others came from the wedding management account.""

Jonathan leaned closer.

"Do you recognize the recipient?""

Daniel pointed to a company name.

Sterling Events Consulting.

Another payment went to an account registered to Patricia Sterling.

A third went to an unfamiliar business called Northbridge Lifestyle Services.

"What's that company?"" I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Jonathan wrote down the name.

"That's something we'll need to investigate.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you know Tiffany was taking money from the wedding budget?""

He shook his head.

"Not like this.""

"How much did you think the wedding cost?""

"About forty-five thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

"Forty-five thousand?""

"That's what Tiffany told me.""

I looked around my living room.

The same room where I had shown him the original budget.

The same room where he had promised that his wedding would be simple.

"Daniel, I spent more than that.""

His face fell.

"I know.""

"No. I spent over forty-five thousand dollars before all the additional expenses. You told me you knew I was paying for everything.""

He looked devastated.

"I didn't know how much she'd added.""

"Did you ever ask?""

He lowered his head.

"No.""

I stood and walked toward the kitchen.

I needed a glass of water.

My hands were shaking so badly that I nearly dropped it.

When I returned, Jonathan was examining the laptop.

"Daniel, there's a message here from Tiffany dated October 21. Can you explain the context?""

He turned the screen.

The message was addressed to Richard.

Once the wedding is finished, Margaret won't have much reason to question the remaining payments. Daniel will be busy settling into the new role, and I'll handle the family communication.

Richard had replied:

Good. Make sure the account transfer is completed before the investor presentation.

I felt cold.

Another message appeared below it.

What about the extra money from the vendors?

Richard's reply:

Keep the records clean. The family doesn't need to see every detail.

I stared at the screen.

"Keep the records clean.""

Jonathan took a photograph of the displayed correspondence.

"This is concerning, but we need to authenticate it and establish the source. Daniel, don't make any further access attempts.""

"I won't.""

Then Daniel opened the envelope he had brought.

Inside was a printed bank statement.

"Mom, this is from the account where Tiffany receives some of the money.""

I looked at the figures.

There were deposits from several different sources.

One payment stood out.

$42,000.

The sender was Northbridge Lifestyle Services.

The date was three days before the wedding.

I looked at Jonathan.

"Is this one of the vendors?""

He shook his head.

"No. We need to identify the company.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I searched the name.""

"What did you find?""

"An online business registration. It was created six months ago. The listed address is a private mailbox.""

Jonathan closed the laptop.

"That's enough for today. We have to stop investigating through private accounts and move this into formal legal channels.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom, I think Tiffany has been lying to me too.""

I didn't respond immediately.

For months, I had watched my son defend her.

Every demand.

Every insult.

Every unreasonable expense.

He had always told me she was under pressure.

Now he was sitting in my living room, discovering that the woman he married might have been hiding an entirely separate financial arrangement.

But I couldn't bring myself to comfort him.

Not yet.

"What do you want from me, Daniel?""

He looked confused.

"I want you to believe me.""

"I believe that you're frightened. I believe you've finally started telling the truth. But I don't know what else you've done.""

He swallowed.

"I made mistakes.""

"You made choices.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

I sat beside him, leaving a small distance between us.

"Your father used to say that the truth doesn't become less painful because you waited to tell it.""

Daniel wiped his eyes.

"I wish Dad were here.""

"So do I.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

Tiffany.

He stared at the screen.

"Don't answer it," Jonathan advised.

Daniel declined the call.

A message appeared immediately.

Where are you?

Then another.

I know you took my laptop.

Daniel looked at me.

I shook my head.

He placed the phone face down.

Five seconds later, it rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a different name.

*RICHARD STERLING.*

Daniel answered on speaker.

"Hello?""

Richard's voice was sharp.

"Where are you?""

Daniel looked at me.

"At my mother's.""

"Then listen carefully. You have until five o'clock to bring those documents to my office.""

"I don't have your documents.""

"Don't insult me. I know what you've been looking at.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Richard, I just want to understand what happened.""

"You don't need to understand anything. You need to fix it.""

"Did you use my mother's money to pay your company's debts?""

A brief silence followed.

Then Richard laughed.

"Your mother agreed to support the business.""

"She never signed anything.""

"She gave you authority to handle the arrangements.""

"No, she didn't.""

Richard's voice became colder.

"Be careful, Daniel. You have a new wife, a new career opportunity, and a family that has done everything to welcome you. Don't throw all of that away because your mother is having a difficult time accepting boundaries.""

I watched my son's face.

He closed his eyes.

Then he said something I hadn't heard him say in years.

"Don't talk about my mother like that.""

Richard went silent.

Daniel continued.

"She paid for our wedding. She sold land that belonged to my grandfather. She gave us everything she had, and you tried to use her savings to rescue your business.""

"You're making a serious mistake.""

"No. I already made one.""

Richard hung up.

Daniel placed the phone on the table.

His hands were shaking.

I looked at him.

"What happens now?""

He took a deep breath.

"I don't know.""

Jonathan stood.

"Now we preserve the evidence, contact the bank, and make sure no additional funds can be moved without your authorization.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke carefully.

"Mrs. Bennett? My name is Evelyn Carter. I'm the events coordinator who handled the wedding vendors.""

"Yes?""

"I apologize for calling you directly, but something has happened.""

I sat upright.

"What happened?""

"Mr. Sterling contacted several suppliers this morning and instructed them to send their final invoices to a different account.""

"Which account?""

There was a pause.

"Northbridge Lifestyle Services.""

Jonathan looked at me immediately.

Evelyn continued.

"I refused because the original contracts were in your name. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"I found a second set of invoices in our system.""

My throat tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"The amounts don't match the invoices you were given.""

Jonathan moved closer to the phone.

"Can you explain the difference?""

Evelyn took a breath.

"The florist invoice you received was for $8,400. The amount submitted through Sterling Events was $14,900.""

I felt the room spin.

"What about the catering?""

"Your invoice was $12,600. The revised one was $21,300.""

"And the transportation?""

"Your original invoice was $3,200. The revised invoice was $7,800.""

I looked at Jonathan.

He was already writing.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Mrs. Bennett, I think someone has been adding charges to your wedding expenses.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much?""

She hesitated.

"I haven't finished checking everything. But based on the documents I've reviewed so far, the difference may be more than forty thousand dollars.""

Daniel covered his mouth.

Then Evelyn added one final sentence.

"There's one more thing. The second set of invoices was approved electronically using an authorization code sent to your son's phone.""

I turned toward Daniel.

His face had gone completely white.

May you like

Because suddenly, the question wasn't whether Tiffany and Richard had been using my money.

It was whether Daniel had been helping them do it all along.
