Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

"That's ridiculous," Tiffany snapped.

The estate manager, Mr. Collins, didn't move.

He had spent the entire evening managing a wedding where everyone seemed to believe that money grew on trees.

Now he looked as if he desperately wanted to be somewhere else.

"Mrs. Sterling, I'm simply following instructions from our accounting department.""

Tiffany folded her arms.

"Then follow them properly. My mother-in-law is paying for this event.""

Mr. Collins turned toward me.

"Mrs. Bennett, could you please confirm whether you authorized the additional payment request submitted this afternoon?""

I frowned.

"What additional payment request?""

Tiffany stepped between us.

"Margaret, don't do this here.""

I looked at her.

"Do what?""

"Create another scene.""

Mr. Collins opened the folder.

"The request was for an additional twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars.""

A murmur traveled across the ballroom.

I stared at him.

"Twenty-seven thousand?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

"For what?""

"Additional catering, premium beverage service, extended entertainment, and a private after-party arrangement.""

I turned toward Tiffany.

"Did you authorize this?""

She rolled her eyes.

"It's a wedding. There are always last-minute expenses.""

"Twenty-seven thousand dollars isn't a last-minute expense.""

"You agreed to cover the wedding.""

"I agreed to pay for the wedding we discussed. Not every extravagant idea that entered your head.""

Tiffany's father approached.

"What's going on?""

Mr. Collins explained the payment issue.

Richard's expression changed immediately.

"Why are we discussing finances in front of guests?""

I looked at him.

"Because your daughter keeps spending my money.""

He stepped closer.

"Watch your tone.""

I held his gaze.

"Watch your daughter's hands.""

A few guests gasped.

Tiffany grabbed her father's arm.

"Daddy, she's trying to embarrass me.""

Richard turned toward Mr. Collins.

"Listen, we have a contract. The balance will be settled.""

"Of course, sir. But the authorization must be verified.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Then verify it.""

Mr. Collins placed a printed document on the nearby table.

I approached.

At the top was my full name.

Margaret Elizabeth Bennett.

Below it was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

I studied the letter M.

The first stroke was too sharp.

My real signature had a slight curve because of an old wrist injury.

I knew that signature better than I knew my own face.

"That's not my signature," I said.

Tiffany laughed nervously.

"Oh, come on.""

I looked up.

"Excuse me?""

"You signed dozens of documents. Maybe you forgot.""

"I did not sign this.""

Richard waved his hand dismissively.

"This is a family matter. We can sort it out tomorrow.""

Mr. Collins shook his head.

"Unfortunately, sir, the authorization must be resolved before any additional services can be provided.""

Tiffany's eyes narrowed.

"You're embarrassing us.""

I almost laughed.

For the first time, I understood that she wasn't embarrassed about what she'd done to me.

She was embarrassed that someone had questioned her access to my money.

I took a photograph of the document.

Then I called Jonathan.

He answered on the first ring.

"Margaret?""

"I'm looking at the document now.""

"Is it the additional payment authorization?""

"Yes. Twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars.""

"Do not touch it. Ask the manager to preserve the original.""

I looked at Mr. Collins.

"Could you please keep this document? My attorney will need a copy.""

"Certainly.""

Tiffany snatched the paper off the table.

"Absolutely not!""

Mr. Collins stepped back.

"Mrs. Sterling, please.""

"That document contains private family information.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did you use my name?""

Her mouth opened.

No answer came.

Jonathan's voice sounded through my phone.

"Margaret, are you still there?""

"Yes.""

"Tell the manager I will contact him directly. And Margaret?""

"Yes?""

"There's something else you need to know. The signature is only part of the problem.""

My stomach tightened.

"What else?""

"I found a transfer request.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Transfer request?""

"Yes. It was submitted three weeks ago. It attempted to redirect the refund and cancellation proceeds from the wedding account into a separate account.""

I stared at the chandelier above me.

"Whose account?""

Jonathan paused.

"An account registered to Sterling Events Consulting.""

I looked at Richard.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"Is that your company?"" I asked him.

Richard straightened his tie.

"I have several business interests.""

"Did you submit a request to redirect my wedding refunds?""

He laughed.

"Don't be absurd.""

Jonathan spoke again.

"Margaret, I have the account details. The registered contact is Richard Sterling.""

The silence around me became enormous.

Tiffany stepped toward my phone.

"Give that to me.""

I moved away.

"No.""

"You're making accusations against my father!""

"Then he can explain the documents.""

Richard's face had turned red.

"This is outrageous. You agreed to fund the wedding, and now you're trying to turn a bookkeeping issue into a criminal investigation.""

I looked at him.

"I haven't accused anyone of a crime.""

"You're threatening us.""

"No, Richard. I'm asking questions.""

He pointed toward the exit.

"Then ask them somewhere else.""

I nodded.

"That's exactly what I intend to do.""

I called Jonathan again.

"Please send me everything. Every contract, every authorization, every payment request.""

"I will.""

"And freeze any remaining payment instructions connected to my account.""

"Already done.""

Tiffany heard him.

Her expression shifted from anger to panic.

"You can't do that!""

I looked at her.

"I can. It's my account.""

"But the vendors need to be paid!""

"Then you and your father can pay them.""

She stared at me as if I had just announced that the sun was going out.

Daniel finally approached.

"Mom, please. We need to talk.""

I turned toward him.

"About what?""

"About fixing this.""

"Your wife slapped me. Someone used my signature. Someone tried to redirect my refunds. What exactly would you like to fix?""

He glanced at Tiffany.

"She didn't mean for things to go this far.""

Tiffany immediately turned on him.

"Daniel, don't you dare put this all on me!""

He flinched.

"That's not what I meant.""

"Your mother is trying to ruin our wedding!""

I watched them argue.

The bride in the expensive white gown.

The groom who couldn't look me in the eye.

The father who had apparently found a way to turn my generosity into a business opportunity.

Then Mr. Collins approached again.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's one more matter.""

I turned.

"What now?""

He lowered his voice.

"The estate's general manager has reviewed the original booking file. The property was reserved under your name, and the deposit came directly from your account.""

"Yes.""

"But there's a clause in the agreement concerning unauthorized changes and outstanding balances.""

I looked at him.

"What does it say?""

He hesitated.

"Under certain circumstances, the estate can suspend the remaining contracted services until the account holder confirms the revised arrangements.""

Tiffany stepped forward.

"That is not happening.""

Mr. Collins continued.

"The general manager has asked me to inform you that the ballroom, catering, and transportation services may be suspended if the payment dispute remains unresolved.""

The room erupted in whispers.

Tiffany grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

"Tell her to fix it!""

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom, please. You can't let them cancel everything.""

I studied his face.

For years, I had mistaken his dependence for affection.

I had believed that every request for help was a sign that he trusted me.

But tonight, when I needed him to stand beside me, he had chosen the woman who had struck me.

I took a breath.

"Daniel, I didn't cancel your wedding.""

He looked relieved.

Then I finished.

"I simply stopped agreeing to pay for things I never authorized.""

His relief disappeared.

Tiffany's eyes filled with tears.

"You're cruel, Margaret.""

I looked at her white satin dress, her diamond necklace, and the enormous floral arrangement behind her.

Every detail had cost me something.

"Perhaps," I said quietly.

"But at least I didn't have to hit someone to get what I wanted.""

Then I walked toward the exit.

Behind me, the orchestra remained silent.

And as I reached the doors, my phone vibrated.

Jonathan had sent another message.

Margaret, I found the original transfer request. You need to see who signed as the witness.

I opened the attachment.

My breath caught.

The witness signature wasn't Richard's.

It wasn't Tiffany's.

It belonged to Daniel.

And beneath his signature was a handwritten note:

My mother has agreed to this arrangement. She does not need to be contacted again.

I read it twice.

Then I looked back through the ballroom doors.

My son was standing beside his bride, watching me leave.

May you like

For the first time in my life, I wondered whether the wedding had been the only thing he wanted from me.

Or whether the betrayal had started long before the invitations were printed.
