Chapter 16: The Envelope at the Wedding

I couldn't stop thinking about the envelope.

Margaret Bennett. Original Authorization.

Those words had been written in Richard Sterling's handwriting, placed inside a folder at my son's wedding, and presented as though they contained a gift from a mother to her only child.

A gift I had never given.

"Daniel," I said, "what exactly did Tiffany tell you?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"She said you'd signed something before the wedding. She told me it was a family investment agreement, but that you wanted to surprise me with it.""

"Did she show you the document?""

"No. She said Richard was handling the paperwork.""

"And you believed her?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I wanted to believe her.""

That answer hurt more than I expected.

Jonathan closed the laptop.

"We need the original envelope, the folder, and every version of the document. The security footage gives us a timeline, but it doesn't establish what was inside.""

"Where would the folder be now?"" I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"Probably at the Sterling office.""

"Why?""

"Richard keeps all the company documents there. Tiffany used to take wedding paperwork to his office because she said it was safer than keeping it at home.""

Jonathan made a note.

"Do you have access to that office?""

"No. And I'm not going there.""

"Good. Don't.""

Daniel nodded.

Then he reached into his bag and removed a small black notebook.

"I found this in my old desk drawer.""

Jonathan opened it.

Inside were handwritten notes from meetings with Richard. Most were ordinary business reminders: client names, proposed schedules, and figures for a planned expansion.

But one entry stood out.

October 12 — M. Bennett authorization. Original to be held by R.S. Final version after wedding.

I read it twice.

"Daniel, did you write this?""

He nodded.

"Richard dictated notes during meetings. I wrote them down so I could prepare the presentation.""

"What did he mean by final version?""

"I don't know.""

Jonathan turned another page.

There was another entry, dated two days later.

*Transfer to follow confirmation. D.B. compensation separate.

T. to coordinate.*

I looked at Daniel.

"D.B.?""

"Daniel Bennett.""

"And T.?""

"Tiffany.""

Jonathan tapped the page.

"This may connect the proposed payment to your compensation. But we need the original notebook preserved and independently examined.""

Daniel nodded.

I looked at my son.

"You knew there was an authorization.""

"I knew Richard was expecting one. I thought you were going to sign it after the wedding.""

"Why would you think that?""

"Because he told me you had already agreed in principle.""

I shook my head.

"I never agreed to anything.""

"I know that now.""

The room fell silent.

Then Jonathan's assistant knocked and entered with a message.

"Mr. Pierce, the bank investigator is on the phone. He says they have an update regarding Northbridge.""

Jonathan took the call.

He listened, asked several questions, and then put the phone on speaker.

A man's voice came through.

"Mr. Pierce, we've completed an initial review of the account records provided by the wedding management company. The Northbridge account appears to have received payments from multiple sources, including Sterling Events Consulting.""

"Have you identified the account holder?"" Jonathan asked.

"We have a registered business contact. The information is being verified through the appropriate channels.""

"Does the account show any transfers to other accounts?""

"Yes. Several. One transfer went to an account associated with Patricia Sterling. Another went to an account associated with Daniel Bennett.""

Daniel went still.

"How much?"" Jonathan asked.

"That information is being reviewed. We don't want to confuse preliminary figures with confirmed amounts.""

"Understood.""

The investigator continued.

"We also found a payment instruction referencing Margaret Bennett's land proceeds. The instruction was not completed.""

I closed my eyes.

At least one attempt had failed.

But the money that had moved was still out there.

After the call, Jonathan turned to us.

"We have enough to request a more complete accounting through the bank's investigation process. We also need to establish whether the documents were submitted to any third parties.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Mom, I think Richard used my name because he knew I wouldn't question him.""

I wanted to say that he should have questioned him.

That he should have protected me.

That a son should not have allowed his mother's financial information to become part of someone else's business plan.

Instead, I asked, "What are you going to do now?""

He took a breath.

"Tell the investigators everything. Including the money I received.""

"All of it?""

"All of it.""

Jonathan nodded.

"That's the right approach. No selective disclosures. No private conversations with Richard or Tiffany. Everything goes through counsel.""

Daniel agreed.

That evening, I received a message from an unfamiliar number.

Mrs. Bennett, this is Victor Hayes. I attended the wedding. I believe you should know what happened before the reception.

I showed Jonathan.

He advised me not to respond until he had verified the sender.

The next morning, Victor's identity was confirmed through the estate's guest records. Jonathan arranged a meeting at his office.

Victor arrived carrying a thin folder.

He was in his early forties, wore an expensive gray suit, and seemed uncomfortable from the moment he sat down.

"I don't want trouble," he said.

Jonathan answered calmly.

"Then tell us only what you personally know.""

Victor looked at me.

"Mr. Sterling invited me to the wedding because he wanted me to see the family arrangement.""

"What family arrangement?"" I asked.

"The investment. He said you were putting money into the company and that Daniel would become a partner.""

"I never agreed to that.""

"I understand that now.""

He opened the folder.

Inside was a printed copy of a presentation.

The first slide showed Richard's company logo.

The second listed projected investors.

The third displayed a capital contribution of $185,000.

Beside the figure were the words:

*BENNETT FAMILY — CONFIRMED.*

I felt my throat tighten.

Victor pointed to the bottom of the slide.

"Richard showed this to me before the wedding. He said the paperwork was complete and the money would be available once the wedding was over.""

"Did he show you my signature?""

Victor nodded.

"On his laptop.""

"Was it the same signature on the agreement?""

"I can't be certain. It was a small image on the screen.""

Jonathan asked, "Did you invest based on this presentation?""

"No. I was considering it, but I wanted confirmation that the funds were actually available.""

"Did Richard provide confirmation?""

"He sent me a copy of a document.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Do you still have it?""

Victor removed another sheet.

"This is what he sent.""

It was a one-page letter bearing my name.

It stated that I intended to provide $185,000 to Sterling Advisory Holdings as a family investment.

At the bottom was a signature.

Mine.

But the date was different from the date on the agreement Jonathan had already examined.

I stared at it.

"Where did he get this?""

Victor shook his head.

"He said it came directly from you.""

Jonathan took the page.

"Mr. Hayes, please preserve the original email and attachment. Don't circulate this document further.""

Victor nodded.

Then he said something that changed everything.

"There's one more reason I contacted you.""

"What is it?""

"Richard told me the investment had already been received.""

I frowned.

"That's impossible.""

"I asked him the same question because I knew the bank had not confirmed anything. He said the money was being held temporarily in a private account.""

"Which account?""

Victor looked at Jonathan.

"Northbridge Lifestyle Services.""

Jonathan and I exchanged a glance.

Victor continued.

"Richard said the account was only a temporary holding arrangement. He promised the money would be transferred into the company after the investor meeting.""

Jonathan closed the folder.

"Did he provide proof?""

Victor nodded.

He removed a final page.

It was a screenshot of a transaction summary.

The reference line read:

BENNETT FAMILY CAPITAL — HOLDING BALANCE.

I stared at the screen.

The amount shown was $185,000.

And beneath it was a line I had never seen before.

*FINAL RELEASE AUTHORITY: MARGARET BENNETT.*

My signature appeared beside it.

I had never authorized that release.

Victor looked at me.

"Richard said you would sign the final release personally.""

Jonathan examined the document.

"Then we need to find out who created this record and where the funds actually originated.""

I couldn't look away from my signature.

Richard wasn't merely claiming that I had promised money.

May you like

He was telling investors that my money had already arrived.

And if he could convince them of that, the consequences could reach far beyond the wedding.
