Chapter 8: The Bride's Secret

Daniel left the USB drive on the coffee table and walked out without another word.

I watched his car disappear down the street.

Jonathan remained seated.

"We need to examine those files before deciding what they establish.""

I nodded.

But my thoughts were somewhere else.

Tiffany had planned the transfer.

She had known about the money.

She had known about the false authorization.

And she had apparently convinced Daniel that his mother's financial information was something she could use whenever she wanted.

I looked at the USB drive.

"Can you open it?""

Jonathan connected it to his laptop.

"Let's see what we have.""

There were twenty-three files.

Emails.

Meeting notes.

Spreadsheets.

A draft investor presentation.

And one folder titled:

*WEDDING FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS.*

Jonathan opened it.

The first document was a list of anticipated wedding expenses.

The second was a spreadsheet showing the money I had already contributed.

The third was a list of assets.

My savings account.

The proceeds from the land sale.

My house.

My retirement investments.

I stared at the screen.

"Why would they have a list of my assets?""

Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

He opened another file.

It was an email from Tiffany to Richard.

The subject line read:

Margaret's financial position.

I began reading.

Dad, Daniel says his mother has more money available than she lets on. She has the land sale proceeds and a substantial savings account. She's already committed to paying for the wedding, so I think we can arrange the remaining transfer without creating too much suspicion.

I stopped breathing.

Jonathan scrolled.

She gets emotional when money is discussed, but Daniel can handle her. If we present it as something that protects our future, she'll eventually agree.

I felt my hands begin to shake.

Another email followed.

We should move quickly. Once the wedding is over, she'll be less involved, and Daniel can manage the communication.

I looked at Jonathan.

"Read that again.""

He did.

Once the wedding is over, she'll be less involved.

I leaned back.

The wedding hadn't been a celebration of my son's future.

It had been a convenient way to gain access to my money.

Jonathan opened the next email.

This one was from Richard.

Make sure the transfer happens before the investor meeting. We cannot afford another delay. Once the money clears, we'll settle the outstanding obligations and repay the family account when the next contract closes.

I looked at the date.

October 18.

Three weeks before the wedding.

"They were planning this before I even sold the land," I whispered.

Jonathan nodded.

"That's what the correspondence suggests.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Thomas and I had spent decades building our life.

We had saved for retirement. We had repaired this house ourselves. We had invested carefully because we knew nobody would look after us if we didn't look after ourselves.

And now my son's new family had treated those savings like a convenient emergency fund.

My phone rang.

Tiffany.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Margaret, where is Daniel?""

Her voice was sharp.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

I looked at Jonathan.

"Why would I know where your husband is?""

"Because he left my father's office and went straight to your house.""

I said nothing.

"Did he give you something?""

"No.""

She laughed.

"You're terrible at lying.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What do you want, Tiffany?""

"I want my husband back.""

"Then call your husband.""

"He's not answering.""

"Perhaps he's busy.""

"Margaret, stop playing games. I know you have the documents.""

I glanced at the laptop.

"Which documents?""

"The files from Richard's office.""

I didn't respond.

Her breathing became louder.

"Listen to me. Those files are confidential. You have no right to use them.""

"Did I sign the confidentiality agreement?""

"Don't be clever.""

"Did I?""

She went silent.

Then her voice changed.

"Margaret, I know things have been difficult between us, but we're family.""

I almost laughed.

"Yesterday you told me I was ruining your wedding.""

"I was upset.""

"You hit me.""

"I already said I was upset!""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

She exhaled angrily.

"Fine. I'm sorry you felt hurt.""

I closed my eyes.

An apology that blamed the victim.

A familiar performance.

"Did you know about the transfer?""

"Yes.""

"Did you use my signature?""

"Daniel was supposed to get your approval.""

"Did he?""

Silence.

Then Tiffany said, "You were going to approve it eventually.""

I stared at the phone.

"That's not an answer.""

"Margaret, your money was sitting in an account earning almost nothing. We were offering you an opportunity to help your own family.""

"By sending it to your father's company?""

"He was going to repay it.""

"When?""

"After the investment deal.""

"And if the deal failed?""

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"How much money did your father owe?""

"That's none of your business.""

"Then my money is none of yours.""

Her voice became icy.

"You really think you're better than everyone because you have money?""

"No. I think I have the right to decide what happens to it.""

"You've always wanted Daniel dependent on you.""

The accusation hit an old wound.

I remembered the years after Thomas died.

Daniel had been twenty-seven, recently divorced from his first serious girlfriend, and struggling to establish his career.

I had helped him pay rent.

I had covered his car repairs.

I had even loaned him money when his first business collapsed.

Perhaps I had helped too much.

But I had never demanded that he stay close.

"I wanted my son to be happy," I said.

"Then stop interfering with his marriage.""

"I didn't interfere. I paid for it.""

Tiffany made a frustrated sound.

"You're going to regret this.""

I ended the call.

Jonathan looked up.

"Did she admit to knowing about the transfer?""

"Yes.""

"Did she admit to using your signature?""

"She admitted she knew about the transfer. She didn't directly admit to forging the signature.""

"Good. I'll document the conversation.""

He returned to the laptop.

A few minutes later, he opened another folder.

"This is interesting.""

I walked back to the table.

"What?""

"There's a draft agreement between Daniel and Sterling Events Consulting.""

He enlarged the document.

At the top was a heading:

*PROPOSED EMPLOYMENT AND PROFIT-SHARING AGREEMENT.*

Daniel's name appeared beneath it.

The proposed salary was substantial.

But the final section caught my attention.

It stated that Daniel would receive a percentage of profits generated through new capital introductions.

"Capital introductions?"" I asked.

Jonathan nodded.

"That could refer to bringing in investors or arranging financing.""

I read the next paragraph.

Then I found a line that made my blood run cold.

Initial capital contribution expected from Bennett family assets: $185,000.

I sat down.

"They were planning to give him a commission?""

"Potentially.""

"For bringing Richard access to my money?""

Jonathan didn't answer.

I looked at the document again.

There was a handwritten note beside the clause.

Daniel's share to be finalized after wedding.

I felt physically sick.

My son might have been promised money in exchange for helping his father-in-law obtain access to my savings.

And then I saw something else.

A second signature appeared on the agreement.

Tiffany's.

She had signed as a witness.

Jonathan photographed the document.

"This needs to go to the appropriate authorities. We also need to establish whether any actual financial transactions occurred.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed the date.

The agreement had been prepared two days before my land sale was completed.

I whispered, "They knew.""

Jonathan looked at me.

"Margaret?""

"They knew I was selling the land. They were waiting for the money.""

He closed the laptop halfway.

"I'm sorry.""

I stared at the document.

"Do you think Daniel knew about the commission?""

"We can't conclude that from this document alone.""

I picked up my phone.

A new message had arrived.

It was from Daniel.

Mom, please don't tell anyone yet. I need to explain something. Tiffany just admitted she has another bank account I didn't know about.

I immediately called him.

He answered after one ring.

"Daniel, where are you?""

"At home.""

"Are you safe?""

He hesitated.

"Yes. But I found something.""

"What?""

"Tiffany's been moving money.""

My heart began pounding.

"Whose money?""

"I don't know. There are transfers from her father's company, payments from wedding suppliers, and something from an account in her name.""

"How much?""

"I added everything I could find.""

He took a shaky breath.

"Mom, it's over two hundred thousand dollars.""

I looked at Jonathan.

He immediately reached for a pen.

"Daniel, listen carefully. Don't move anything. Don't delete anything. Let Jonathan handle the records.""

"There's more.""

"What?""

"I found an email from Tiffany to her father.""

"What did it say?""

Daniel went silent.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"She said that once the wedding was over, you would be too embarrassed to fight them.""
