Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Wedding

I didn't sleep that night.

At 7:30 the following morning, Jonathan arrived carrying two thick folders and a laptop.

He placed everything on my kitchen table.

"Before we discuss the documents," he said, "I need you to understand something. We are dealing with more than an unpleasant family disagreement.""

I poured him coffee.

"What have you found?""

He opened the first folder.

Inside were copies of payment authorizations, vendor agreements, and several emails.

"Your wedding contributions were originally made through your personal account. You paid the estate deposit, the catering deposit, the transportation company, and several suppliers.""

"Correct.""

"Then, approximately one month ago, someone began requesting changes to the billing arrangements.""

He showed me an email.

The sender was Tiffany.

Dear Accounts Team,

Please direct all future invoices and refunds to our updated wedding management account. Margaret Bennett has approved this change and is aware of the arrangement.

I frowned.

"I never received this.""

"I know.""

Jonathan opened another document.

"This is the account information they provided.""

I read the company name.

Sterling Events Consulting.

Richard Sterling's business.

"Why would a wedding account need to be connected to his company?""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

He clicked on his laptop.

A spreadsheet appeared.

It contained several payments requested over the previous six weeks.

Some were legitimate wedding expenses.

Others were listed as consulting fees, administrative services, and event management charges.

I leaned closer.

"Thirty-five hundred dollars for event consulting?""

"Yes.""

"Who provided that service?""

"According to the invoice, Sterling Events Consulting.""

I stared at him.

"So Richard was charging me to organize a wedding his daughter was controlling?""

Jonathan nodded.

"That appears to be what the paperwork suggests.""

I felt sick.

"How much?""

"At least $18,400 in questionable charges or proposed charges. Some have not been paid. Others are still being reviewed.""

I sat back.

For a few moments, neither of us spoke.

Then Jonathan opened the second folder.

"There's another issue.""

I looked at him.

"Of course there is.""

He didn't smile.

"Richard Sterling's company has been under financial pressure. I found public records indicating several overdue commercial obligations and a pending dispute with a former business partner.""

"Why does that matter?""

"Because the attempted transfer of $68,000 would have placed your money into an account controlled by that company.""

I stared at the documents.

"Could they have used it for something other than the wedding?""

"Once transferred, recovering it might have been difficult. That's why the bank's intervention was important.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Was Daniel aware?""

Jonathan paused.

"That's a question we need to answer carefully.""

My phone rang.

Tiffany.

I looked at the screen.

Jonathan gestured for me to answer.

I pressed the speaker button.

"Hello?""

"Margaret, finally.""

Her voice sounded different from the night before. Less polished. More impatient.

"What do you want, Tiffany?""

"We need to resolve the situation.""

"What situation?""

"Your decision to freeze the wedding funds.""

I glanced at Jonathan.

"Those are my funds.""

"Yes, but you agreed to pay for the wedding.""

"I paid for the wedding.""

"Not all of it.""

"That sounds like a problem for you.""

She exhaled sharply.

"Margaret, the vendors are calling. The florist wants confirmation. The transportation company is demanding payment. The estate is threatening to suspend services.""

"Then pay them.""

"With what?""

I didn't answer.

She lowered her voice.

"Daniel says you spoke last night.""

"Yes.""

"He shouldn't have gone behind my back.""

I looked at Jonathan.

There it was again.

Not concern.

Not remorse.

Control.

"Why did you use my name to request a transfer?""

Silence.

Then she laughed.

"That document was an administrative form.""

"Did I authorize it?""

"Margaret, we were trying to make things easier.""

"Did I authorize it?""

"Daniel told me you wouldn't mind.""

I closed my eyes.

"So Daniel was your permission?""

"He is your son.""

"And you are his wife. Neither of you owns my bank account.""

Her voice sharpened.

"You know what? This is exactly why I never wanted you involved in our wedding.""

I looked at the crystal vase on my table.

"You never wanted me involved?""

"You wanted everything your way. You questioned every decision. You made us feel guilty about spending money.""

"I sold family land to pay for your flowers.""

"Nobody asked you to sell land!""

The words echoed through my kitchen.

I almost smiled.

"You're right. Nobody forced me.""

"Then stop acting like a victim.""

Jonathan reached over and wrote something on a notepad.

I nodded.

"Tiffany, did you sign the additional payment authorization using my name?""

Another silence.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"The document for twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars.""

"That was handled by the planner.""

"Which planner?""

She hesitated.

"Never mind.""

"Who?""

"Margaret, I have things to do.""

Then she hung up.

Jonathan closed the folder.

"Don't contact her again about the documents. Let me handle it.""

I nodded.

But before he could say anything else, my phone rang again.

This time, it was Patricia Sterling.

Tiffany's mother.

I answered.

"Hello, Patricia.""

"Margaret, I think we need to have a civilized conversation.""

I nearly laughed.

"After last night?""

"Please don't bring up the slap again. Tiffany has been crying all morning.""

I stared at the phone.

"Did she tell you why?""

"She said you provoked her.""

Jonathan looked up.

I continued.

"Patricia, your daughter struck me in front of two hundred and fifty people.""

"She was overwhelmed.""

"And now someone has attempted to transfer sixty-eight thousand dollars from my account.""

Patricia went silent.

Then she said, "I think you're misunderstanding the financial arrangements.""

"Then explain them.""

"Richard has been helping with certain administrative matters.""

"Using my money?""

"Temporarily.""

I looked at Jonathan.

He was listening carefully.

"How much money did Richard expect to receive?""

Patricia sighed.

"Margaret, his company has been experiencing some difficulties. Tiffany and Daniel wanted to help.""

"With my savings?""

"It would have been repaid.""

"When?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you know about the transfer?""

Another pause.

Then Patricia said something unexpected.

"Please don't destroy Tiffany's future over this.""

I sat very still.

"Her future?""

"Richard has been negotiating an important investment deal. He needed the funds to bridge a temporary gap. If the wedding had gone smoothly, everything would have been settled.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"So my wedding contributions were going to finance your husband's business.""

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""

"Did you know about the false authorization?""

Patricia's voice dropped.

"I didn't know the details.""

That wasn't a denial.

Before I could ask another question, she continued.

"There's something else you should know, Margaret.""

I waited.

"Richard didn't invite those business associates to the wedding just to celebrate.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What does that mean?""

"He planned to announce a partnership with Daniel.""

I frowned.

"Daniel works in marketing. Richard owns a consulting company.""

"Exactly.""

"What's the connection?""

Patricia took a shaky breath.

"Richard promised Daniel a senior position in his company. But there was one condition.""

"What condition?""

"He needed to show investors that the company had access to substantial private capital.""

I looked at Jonathan.

His expression had gone completely still.

Patricia whispered:

"Your money was supposed to be proof.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then Jonathan slowly closed his laptop.

"Margaret, I think we need to investigate whether Daniel was being recruited as an employee or used as part of Richard's financial presentation.""

I stared at the wall.

My son had signed a document claiming I had agreed to a transfer.

His father-in-law had planned to use my savings to impress investors.

And the wedding guests had been invited to witness what Richard apparently considered a business opportunity.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Mrs. Bennett, my name is Laura Mitchell. I work with Richard Sterling.

I was at your son's wedding last night. I think you deserve to know what he told the investors about you.*

May you like

A second message followed.

Please meet me before Richard discovers I've contacted you.
