Chapter 9: The Second Inheritance

My father refused to explain anything until we were somewhere private.

The police arranged for Mom to be taken to the hospital for an examination. Although she had no visible injuries, they wanted to make sure she hadn't been given anything that could affect her memory or judgment.

I went with her.

Dad and Evelyn followed in a separate vehicle.

At the hospital, Mom held my hand while a nurse checked her blood pressure.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I frowned.

"Why are you apologizing?""

"I should have told you sooner.""

"Mom, you were threatened.""

"I knew something was wrong. I knew Rachel was hiding something. But I kept hoping I was mistaken.""

I squeezed her hand.

"You're not responsible for what she did.""

Mom looked toward the door.

"Michael was different when he was little.""

I sat beside her.

"He was always getting into trouble. Your father used to say he had too much energy.""

She smiled faintly.

"Do you remember the summer he broke the greenhouse window?""

I laughed despite everything.

"He blamed the neighbor's dog.""

"And your father made him apologize.""

Mom's smile disappeared.

"After your father died, Michael stopped visiting. Then Rachel started encouraging him to come over more often.""

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

She looked down at her hands.

"Sometimes I think he was waiting for something.""

Before I could answer, a nurse entered.

"Mrs. Carter, the doctor would like to speak with you.""

I stood.

"Can I come?""

"Of course.""

The doctor examined Mom's records and asked several questions about her medication.

Then he turned toward me.

"Your mother appears alert and oriented. I see no basis in this examination for declaring her mentally incompetent.""

I felt a wave of relief.

"Can you document that?""

"Absolutely.""

He paused.

"But I do have a concern.""

"What?""

"Her medication organizer contains several tablets that aren't listed in her prescription history.""

My stomach tightened.

"Which ones?""

He showed me the packaging.

They were ordinary-looking tablets, but one had been placed in a bottle labeled with Mom's prescribed blood pressure medication.

The doctor explained that they could cause dizziness, confusion, and significant drops in blood pressure.

I felt sick.

"Could someone have been giving her these?""

"Possibly. We'll send them for testing.""

Mom began crying.

"I thought I was getting forgetful.""

I took her hand.

"Mom...""

"Sometimes I couldn't remember what I'd eaten. Sometimes I felt like the room was moving.""

The doctor placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"We'll investigate that carefully.""

I stepped into the corridor and called the police.

They added the medication issue to their report.

Then I called Mr. Bennett.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel, I've been trying to reach you.""

"Did you help fake my father's death?""

There was silence.

"Where are you?""

"At the hospital.""

"Good. Keep your mother there.""

"Answer me.""

He sighed.

"Yes. I helped your father disappear.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"Because he was convinced someone had tried to kill him. He wanted time to gather evidence.""

"And you helped Rachel and Michael file the documents?""

"No.""

"Your signature is on the original authorization.""

"I signed the emergency protection order. I did not sign the forged property documents.""

I hesitated.

"Then why did you let them bury Victor Hale under my father's name?""

"Because by the time I realized what they had done, the funeral had already happened.""

I gripped the phone.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No. I expect you to look at the evidence.""

He lowered his voice.

"Daniel, there's a second inheritance. Your father established it through Northbridge Legacy Partners. It was supposed to become active if he died before Evelyn was formally recognized.""

"Why didn't he tell us?""

"Because he didn't want the family fighting over it.""

I glanced through the hospital room window.

Mom was speaking to a nurse.

"What does Northbridge own?""

"Three commercial properties, two investment accounts, and the controlling interest in a development company.""

"How much?""

"Approximately eight million dollars at the time of the last valuation.""

I stopped breathing.

Eight million.

"And who owns it now?""

"That's the problem.""

"What problem?""

"Someone filed a beneficiary amendment last month.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

He hesitated.

"Rachel Carter.""

I stared at the hospital wall.

"She can't do that.""

"Apparently, she submitted documentation claiming she was acting on behalf of your father.""

"He's alive.""

"Yes. Which makes the filing fraudulent.""

I heard someone approaching.

Dad stood at the end of the corridor, leaning heavily on Evelyn.

He had insisted on coming despite the doctor's objections.

I ended the call.

"Dad, we need to talk.""

He looked at my face.

"What happened?""

I explained everything.

The eight million dollars.

The beneficiary amendment.

Rachel's forged documents.

Dad closed his eyes.

"I was afraid of this.""

"Why didn't you tell me about Northbridge?""

He looked at me.

"Because it wasn't meant to be money for us.""

"Then who was it for?""

He glanced at Evelyn.

"Her.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Robert, you don't need to do this now.""

Dad continued.

"Northbridge was created to protect the inheritance I intended for my daughter. But the agreement contained a condition.""

"What condition?""

"She had to be formally identified before her thirtieth birthday.""

Evelyn frowned.

"I'm thirty-two.""

Dad nodded.

"Because someone deliberately delayed the adoption records.""

I looked between them.

"Who?""

Dad's voice became almost inaudible.

"Michael.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"How could he delay something like that?""

"He had access to the original company files. He removed the hospital records and changed the address of the adoption agency.""

Evelyn looked devastated.

"He knew I was his sister?""

"Yes," Dad replied.

"And he kept it from me?""

Dad nodded.

I turned away.

Michael hadn't just stolen money.

He had stolen years from a woman who had spent her entire life wondering where she came from.

Then Evelyn suddenly spoke.

"Wait.""

We all turned.

She was staring at her phone.

"I just received an email.""

"What is it?"" I asked.

She showed us the screen.

It was from an account registered to the original hospital administrator.

There was one attachment.

A scanned birth certificate.

And beneath it, a second document.

An amendment to the Northbridge trust.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

But it wasn't the same signature as the one on the original documents.

I looked at Dad.

"Did you sign this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

I read the beneficiary clause again.

Then I looked up.

The amendment didn't name Evelyn.

It didn't name Michael.

It didn't name me.

It named Rachel.

But the most disturbing part was the date.

The document had been signed four months before my father supposedly died.

I turned toward Evelyn.

"Who sent this?""

She checked the email again.

"There's a note.""

"What does it say?""

She read it aloud.

"Your family has been protecting the wrong person. The original Northbridge beneficiary was never Evelyn.""

Dad's face went pale.

He reached for the phone.

"Show me.""

His eyes moved across the message.

Then he whispered a name.

"Victoria.""

Mom looked confused.

"Who is Victoria?""

Dad slowly lowered the phone.

"Your sister.""

The room fell silent.

My mother stood frozen.

"My sister died when I was seventeen.""

Dad shook his head.

"That's what you were told.""

I looked at him.

"What are you saying?""

He stared at Mom.

"Margaret, your sister didn't die in that car accident.""

Mom began shaking.

Then Dad delivered the revelation that changed the entire inheritance story.

"Victoria was the first person Rachel contacted when she started planning to take our money.""

May you like

And suddenly, the question wasn't whether Rachel had betrayed our family.

It was how many members of our family had been involved from the beginning.
