Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
Then I called the number.
A woman answered.
"Hello?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Evelyn. I was your father's nurse.""
My heart began pounding.
"Where is he?""
"He's safe for now.""
"Where?""
"I can't give you the address over the phone.""
I stood and walked toward the window.
"Is he alive?""
There was a silence.
Then she answered.
"Yes, Daniel. Your father is alive.""
I sat down heavily.
For three years, I had visited his grave.
I had spoken at his funeral.
I had carried his coffin.
I had watched my mother cry over his photograph.
And now a stranger was telling me that he was alive.
"Why didn't he contact me?""
Evelyn sighed.
"Because he believed you were in danger.""
"From whom?""
She didn't answer immediately.
"Your wife.""
I closed my eyes.
"Tell me what happened.""
"Your father suffered a medical emergency shortly before the funeral. He was admitted under an emergency identity because of a problem with his insurance and an ongoing legal dispute involving the family estate.""
"That doesn't explain a fake death certificate.""
"No. It doesn't.""
I heard papers moving on her end.
"Daniel, someone arranged for another patient, who had no immediate family, to be identified as your father. The funeral arrangements were handled quickly.""
I felt nauseated.
"Who arranged it?""
"I believe your brother and your wife were involved.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why?""
"Your father discovered something about the property and a company account. He was preparing to report it.""
"What company account?""
"The Carter Family Trust.""
I knew the name.
My father had established it years earlier to manage several properties and investments.
He had always told us it was meant to protect the family.
"How much money?""
"Your father estimated that more than two million dollars had disappeared.""
I stared at the wall.
Two million.
My brother had always been struggling financially.
Rachel had recently begun spending money more freely.
New jewelry.
Expensive clothes.
A vacation in Italy she claimed was paid for with airline points.
Suddenly, those details looked different.
"Where is my father?""
Evelyn finally gave me an address.
A private rehabilitation facility outside the city.
"Come alone," she warned.
"And don't tell your wife.""
"I won't.""
"One more thing, Daniel.""
"Yes?""
"Your father doesn't know whether your mother is safe.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"Why would he think that?""
"Because the last time he saw her, someone told him she had agreed to sign away the house.""
The call ended.
I immediately checked the front door.
Then I checked every window.
At breakfast, Mom noticed that I hadn't touched my food.
"You're going to see him, aren't you?"" she asked.
I looked up.
"How did you know?""
She smiled sadly.
"Because you have your father's face when you're trying not to cry.""
I reached across the table and took her hand.
"Mom, Dad is alive.""
Her teacup slipped.
It hit the saucer with a sharp crack.
"What?""
I showed her the photograph.
She covered her mouth.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then she began sobbing.
"Oh, Robert.""
I had not heard her say his name like that in years.
"He's at a rehabilitation facility," I explained.
"I'm going to see him.""
Mom stood.
"I'm coming.""
"Mom, I don't know what condition he's in.""
"He's my husband.""
There was no arguing with that.
We left at eleven.
I told Rachel I was taking Mom to a specialist appointment.
She replied with a heart emoji.
That single symbol made my stomach turn.
The facility was a quiet building surrounded by pine trees. Evelyn met us in the reception area.
She was in her late fifties, with short brown hair and tired eyes.
"Daniel?""
I nodded.
She looked at Mom.
"Margaret?""
Mom began crying again.
"Please. Take me to him.""
Evelyn led us down a corridor.
Room 214.
She opened the door.
And there he was.
My father sat in a wheelchair beside the window.
His hair was thinner. His shoulders were smaller. A pale scar ran down the side of his neck.
But when he turned, I recognized his eyes.
"Daniel?""
My legs nearly gave out.
"Dad.""
He stared at me.
Then he looked at Mom.
"Margaret?""
She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around him.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
I stood beside the bed, unable to move.
Finally, Dad reached for my hand.
"You're taller than I remember.""
I laughed through my tears.
"You're supposed to be dead, Dad.""
He closed his eyes.
"I know.""
Mom held his face.
"Why didn't you come home?""
He looked at her.
"Because I was told you had signed the papers.""
"What papers?""
"The house transfer. The trust authorization. Everything.""
Mom shook her head.
"I never signed anything.""
Dad looked at me.
"Then Rachel lied to all of us.""
I pulled a chair closer.
"Tell me what happened.""
Dad took a slow breath.
"Three years ago, I discovered that Michael had been moving money from the family trust. At first, I thought it was a mistake. Then I found transfers to accounts connected to Rachel.""
My stomach tightened.
"How much?""
"Almost two million dollars.""
"Why didn't you report him?""
"I was going to. But Rachel came to see me first.""
"What did she say?""
Dad looked toward the door.
"She told me Michael had proof that you were involved.""
I stared.
"Me?""
"She showed me bank documents with your signature. She said you had approved the transfers.""
"That's impossible.""
"I know that now.""
He reached for a glass of water.
"Then came the accident.""
"What accident?""
"Someone tampered with my medication. I collapsed in my study. By the time the ambulance arrived, I could barely speak.""
I felt cold.
"Who tampered with it?""
Dad looked at me.
"Rachel.""
The room went silent.
Mom began shaking.
Dad continued.
"While I was hospitalized, Michael visited me. He told me you had been arrested.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"He said you were being investigated. He claimed Rachel was helping you avoid prison.""
I shook my head.
"None of that happened.""
"I know. But I was heavily sedated. I couldn't communicate properly.""
"How did they fake your death?""
Dad looked at Evelyn.
She stepped forward.
"The hospital discovered an identification error after another patient died. By then, the funeral had already taken place. Your father was transferred to a private facility under a protective arrangement.""
"Who arranged that?""
"Your father's attorney at the time," Evelyn answered.
I frowned.
"Mr. Bennett?""
"No," Dad said.
"Another attorney.""
He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a folded document.
"Daniel, there's something you need to understand. I didn't leave the house to you.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"I left it to your mother. And I established a separate trust for you and Michael.""
He unfolded the paper.
"But six months before I disappeared, I changed the trust beneficiaries.""
"To whom?""
Dad looked directly at me.
"Your future children.""
I froze.
Rachel and I had no children.
"Why would you do that?""
"Because I discovered Michael had been trying to sell the properties. I wanted to protect what belonged to the family.""
Then he added something that made my blood run cold.
"But there's another reason I changed the documents.""
He pointed to a name printed at the bottom.
A name I had never seen before.
*Evelyn Carter.*
I looked at the nurse.
She lowered her eyes.
May you like
Dad whispered:
"She's not just your nurse, Daniel.""
