Chapter 8: The Woman They Tried to Silence
I recognized the signature immediately.
It was copied from an old insurance form I had signed years earlier.
Someone had carefully reproduced every curve of my handwriting.
The document claimed that I had requested an emergency evaluation of my mother and agreed to transfer responsibility for her financial affairs to Rachel.
I had never signed it.
I had never authorized it.
And now someone was using my name to take away my mother's independence.
"Call the police," I told Evelyn.
She was already dialing.
I called the officer I had spoken with earlier and sent him the photograph.
His response was immediate.
"Mr. Carter, do not go to that property. We're dispatching officers.""
I looked at my father.
He was trying to sit up.
"Where are you going?"" I asked.
"With you.""
"Absolutely not.""
"Daniel, Margaret is my wife.""
"You're barely strong enough to stand.""
He looked at me with a determination I remembered from childhood.
"Then help me stand.""
Evelyn stepped between us.
"Robert, you cannot leave this facility without medical clearance.""
Dad stared at her.
"She's my wife.""
"And you're my patient.""
For a moment, father and daughter looked at each other.
Then Evelyn softened.
"Let me arrange transport. But you are not going into that house.""
I agreed.
We waited for the police.
While we waited, I opened the leather folder again.
There was another photograph inside.
It showed my father standing beside a young woman in a hospital corridor.
The date was printed on the back.
Twenty-nine years earlier.
The young woman was Evelyn.
I looked at her.
"Did you know Dad before you discovered you were his daughter?""
She shook her head.
"No. I found the adoption records while researching my medical history. I contacted him afterward.""
"Why did he trust you so quickly?""
She smiled sadly.
"Because I had your grandmother's eyes.""
Dad chuckled weakly.
"And because she refused to leave until I told her the truth.""
I looked down at the photograph.
For the first time, I understood why my father had changed the inheritance agreement.
He hadn't simply been protecting money.
He had been trying to restore a daughter he had believed lost forever.
Then a police officer called.
"Mr. Carter, we've reached the property.""
I stood immediately.
"What about my mother?""
"She's inside. We have visual confirmation.""
"Is she safe?""
The officer paused.
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I heard shouting in the background.
Then the line went dead.
I called back.
No answer.
Dad grabbed my sleeve.
"Go.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"We'll wait for the officers.""
I couldn't sit still.
I paced the room until another call came through.
This time, it was from a number I recognized.
Michael.
I answered.
"What have you done?""
He laughed.
"Always so dramatic, Daniel.""
"Where's Mom?""
"She's fine.""
"Put her on the phone.""
"Not yet.""
I closed my eyes.
"Michael, the police are there.""
"I know.""
"Then why are you still inside?""
"Because Rachel says we have time.""
I felt my anger rising.
"Time for what?""
He lowered his voice.
"To finish what Dad started.""
"What does that mean?""
"Ask him about the second company.""
I looked at my father.
His expression changed.
Michael continued.
"Ask him where the money really went. Ask him why he made you a director without telling you.""
"Michael, stop playing games.""
"I'm not playing, brother. I'm trying to save you.""
I almost laughed.
"Save me from what?""
"From the truth.""
Then I heard a familiar voice in the background.
Mom.
"Michael, please. Just tell him.""
The phone moved.
A moment later, Mom spoke.
"Daniel?""
"Mom! Are you okay?""
"I'm all right.""
Her voice sounded weak but steady.
"Listen to me. Don't bring the key.""
"Why?""
"Because Rachel already has what she wants.""
I froze.
"What?""
Mom whispered:
"She has the original will.""
Dad sat upright.
"Margaret?""
I put the phone on speaker.
Mom gasped when she heard him.
"Robert?""
"Margaret, where are you?""
She began crying.
"Oh, Robert. You're alive.""
"I am. Listen to Daniel. Don't sign anything.""
Rachel's voice interrupted.
"That's enough.""
There was a scuffle.
Mom screamed.
Then Michael spoke again.
"You're too late, Daniel.""
The call ended.
I turned toward the police officer standing in the doorway.
"What's happening?""
He looked serious.
"We found your mother. She's physically unharmed, but there's been an incident involving a forged medical document.""
"What about Rachel and Michael?""
"They've left the property.""
I grabbed my jacket.
"Where are they going?""
"We're tracking their vehicle.""
"Can I see my mother?""
"Yes. But we need to speak with you first.""
The officer showed me a photograph taken inside the house.
The dining table was covered with paperwork.
Several documents had been signed.
One of them transferred control of Margaret's property to a company called Northbridge Legacy Partners.
I recognized the name.
It was the same company listed in the Carter Holdings financial records.
"Who owns it?"" I asked.
"We're still checking.""
I looked closer at the photograph.
There was a small handwritten note beside the documents.
Three words.
*Phase Two Complete.*
I turned to the officer.
"What does that mean?""
He shook his head.
"We don't know yet.""
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Rachel.
*You should have stayed out of this, Daniel.*
Another message followed.
*Your father made the same mistake.*
I looked at Dad.
He had read the messages over my shoulder.
His face had gone completely white.
"Daniel," he whispered.
"What?""
"Northbridge isn't just a company.""
He pointed to the photograph.
"It's the name of the trust I created before Evelyn was born.""
I stared at him.
"But you said the trust was called Carter Family Trust.""
"It was.""
He swallowed.
"Northbridge was the original beneficiary.""
"Beneficiary of what?""
May you like
Dad looked at me.
"Everything.""
