Chapter 6: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
I looked from my father to Evelyn.
Then back again.
"What does her name have to do with our family?""
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"Daniel, sit down.""
"I am sitting.""
"Then listen carefully.""
Evelyn moved toward the door.
"I think I should give you some privacy.""
Dad caught her wrist.
"No. You've earned the right to hear this.""
She stopped.
Mom looked between them.
"Robert, what is happening?""
My father took her hand.
"Margaret, do you remember the baby we lost before Daniel was born?""
Mom's face changed.
For a moment, the room seemed to disappear around her.
"Of course I remember.""
I looked at her.
"What baby?""
Mom swallowed.
"A little girl. I was five months pregnant. I lost her in the hospital.""
Dad nodded.
"That's what we were told.""
Mom's fingers tightened around his.
"What do you mean?""
He looked at Evelyn.
"She was born alive.""
Mom stopped breathing.
"What?""
"She lived for several hours. The doctors told us she hadn't survived. But one of the nurses made a mistake with the paperwork.""
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"I was that baby.""
I stared at her.
The woman who had cared for my father.
The woman who had contacted me.
My sister.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Evelyn looked at me.
"My original name was Elizabeth Carter. I was adopted when I was six months old. I found my biological family two years ago.""
Mom stood so abruptly that her chair moved backward.
"You're my daughter?""
Evelyn nodded.
Mom covered her mouth.
"Oh, my God.""
She reached for Evelyn, but stopped halfway.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Evelyn began crying.
"I wanted to. But Dad asked me to wait until he could explain everything.""
Dad looked down.
"By the time I discovered she was alive, Rachel and Michael had already started moving money from the trust.""
I turned toward him.
"What does that have to do with them?""
"Everything.""
Dad explained that when Evelyn discovered her biological identity, she had contacted him privately. She possessed documents from the adoption agency, including the original hospital record.
Those records revealed something else.
The doctor who had signed the original death certificate had later been investigated for falsifying medical records.
He had also been connected to a private company that managed several of my father's properties.
"Michael knew about Evelyn?"" I asked.
Dad nodded.
"He found out after accessing some of my old correspondence.""
"And Rachel?""
"She knew too.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"How?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Rachel contacted me six months ago. She said she wanted to help reunite the family.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"She knew who you were?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did she pretend to be concerned about Mom's memory?""
Evelyn hesitated.
Dad answered.
"Because Margaret was the only person who could recognize the original documents.""
Mom looked confused.
"What documents?""
Dad leaned forward.
"The original inheritance agreement. It contains a handwritten amendment that cannot be legally replaced without your testimony.""
I looked at the papers in his hand.
"Where is it?""
"In the safe deposit box.""
The silver key.
I suddenly understood why Rachel had been so desperate to get it.
Dad continued.
"The amendment names Evelyn as my biological daughter and gives her a share of the trust. But more importantly, it prevents Michael from selling the properties without unanimous approval.""
I stared at him.
"So they wanted to destroy the amendment?""
"Yes.""
"And make Mom look mentally incompetent?""
Dad nodded.
"If Margaret were declared incapable of managing her affairs, they could challenge her authority over the estate.""
I stood and walked toward the window.
Everything was connected.
The pills.
The threats.
The affair.
The forged signatures.
Rachel hadn't simply betrayed my marriage.
She had been dismantling my family piece by piece.
But one question remained.
"Why was Rachel involved with Michael?""
Dad looked uncomfortable.
Then he said something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Because Michael promised her something.""
"What?""
"Half of the money.""
I turned.
"And what did Michael get?""
Dad's eyes darkened.
"Control of the trust.""
I shook my head.
"That's all?""
"No.""
He reached for another document.
"Michael also wanted something from you.""
He handed it to me.
It was a photocopy of a property authorization.
My name appeared at the bottom.
My signature.
But I had never signed it.
I looked closer.
The date was from eight months earlier.
"What's this?""
Dad answered quietly.
"Your brother was trying to obtain your signature so he could transfer your ownership interest in the family company.""
I looked up.
"I don't own a company.""
Dad gave me a tired smile.
"You do. You inherited fifty percent of Carter Holdings when I was declared legally deceased.""
I stared at the document.
"Then who owns the other fifty percent?""
"Michael.""
The implications hit me immediately.
Michael hadn't merely been stealing money.
He had been trying to take control of a company I didn't even know I owned.
And Rachel had been helping him.
I looked at Evelyn.
"Does Rachel know you're here?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Does Michael?""
"No.""
Dad gripped my arm.
"Then keep it that way.""
I nodded.
"We need to go to Mr. Bennett.""
Dad shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because the attorney you know isn't the attorney who handled my disappearance.""
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Dad pointed to a signature on the document.
"Look at the witness.""
I read the name.
Thomas Bennett.
Mr. Bennett.
The same man who had just called me.
My stomach tightened.
"He's involved?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Thomas was the person who arranged the protective transfer. He helped me survive. But he also helped Rachel and Michael file the first false documents.""
I stepped backward.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he believed they had already killed me.""
Mom gasped.
"Robert!""
Dad nodded.
"They told him I was dead before I was.""
I looked at the paperwork again.
There were two signatures beside the witness line.
Thomas Bennett.
And another name.
*Rachel Carter.*
My wife had signed a document confirming my father's death.
Six months before his funeral.
I felt sick.
Then Evelyn's phone began vibrating.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She turned the phone toward me.
A message from an unknown number.
*We know Daniel visited the facility. You have until midnight to return the original documents. Otherwise, Margaret will be the next person who disappears.*
I immediately called Mom's phone.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
But it wasn't my mother.
It was Rachel.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
My blood turned to ice.
"Where is my mother?""
Rachel laughed softly.
"She's with someone who wants to talk to you.""
"Put her on the phone.""
"Not until you tell me where the silver key is.""
I looked at the key lying in my father's hand.
Rachel continued.
"And Daniel?""
"What?""
"There's something your father hasn't told you.""
I looked at him.
He had gone completely still.
Rachel's voice became almost cheerful.
"Ask him why Michael was the one who identified the body at his funeral.""
Then she hung up.
I turned toward my father.
"Why?""
He closed his eyes.
And when he finally spoke, his answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had left.
"Because the body in that coffin wasn't a stranger, Daniel.""
May you like
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"It was the man who tried to kill me.""
