Chapter 19: The Children They Switched

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

I stared at the photograph on the table.

Margaret stood beside Helen's hospital bed, holding a newborn baby. The date printed in the corner matched the night I was born.

But Victoria's accusation made no sense.

"You're saying Mom switched us?""

Victoria nodded.

"She switched the babies because your grandfather wanted to control who inherited the Carter fortune.""

Evelyn looked horrified.

"Which baby was I?""

Victoria pointed at the photograph.

"The child in Margaret's arms was you, Evelyn.""

I looked at her.

"Then where was I?""

Victoria's expression softened, but not with kindness.

"You were with Helen.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"You're telling me Margaret gave me to Helen?""

"She gave Helen the child she had delivered. And she kept the child who had been born to Robert and Margaret.""

Evelyn stepped backward.

"That's impossible. My adoption records say I was born to Margaret and Robert.""

"They were falsified.""

I looked at Nora.

"Is it true?""

The old nurse's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. No, that can't be right.""

Nora reached for her hand.

"Your mother gave birth to you, Evelyn. Helen gave birth to Daniel. But Margaret knew your grandfather intended to erase Helen's child and keep you as the only legitimate heir.""

I looked at Victoria.

"Why would he want that?""

"Because your grandfather had already decided that Daniel would inherit the company. He wanted a son he could control and a daughter he could use in a political marriage.""

I laughed bitterly.

"So he planned my entire life before I could even speak.""

"Yes.""

"And Margaret switched us to stop him?""

Victoria nodded.

"She knew Helen would never agree to abandon her child. So she helped her escape with you.""

I looked at Nora.

"Then why did Mom keep Evelyn?""

"Because Helen wanted you to have a stable life," Nora answered.

"She knew she couldn't protect you while your grandfather was hunting her. Margaret promised to raise Evelyn as her own.""

Evelyn wiped her face.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

Nora lowered her eyes.

"Because the truth would have exposed the switch. And your grandfather would have found Helen.""

I turned toward Victoria.

"Where is Helen now?""

Victoria smiled.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you. She's alive.""

I stepped closer.

"Where?""

"Somewhere your grandfather never thought to look.""

"Tell me.""

Victoria shook her head.

"Not until you understand what happened after the switch.""

She removed another photograph from her coat.

This one showed Margaret standing outside a small house with Helen.

They were smiling.

And between them stood a young girl.

I recognized her immediately.

Evelyn.

She looked about six years old.

I stared.

"How is that possible?""

Victoria explained that Helen had secretly visited Evelyn for years. Margaret had arranged the meetings, believing the child deserved to know the woman who had given birth to her.

But after my grandfather discovered the arrangement, the visits stopped.

"Who discovered them?"" I asked.

"Your father.""

"Robert?""

Victoria nodded.

"He was furious. He believed Margaret had betrayed him.""

Evelyn looked at Nora.

"Did Robert know I was his daughter?""

"Eventually," Nora said.

"But he didn't know you had survived until years later.""

I felt another wave of confusion.

"Then why did he keep the adoption secret?""

Victoria's answer was immediate.

"Because your grandfather threatened to destroy the entire family if the truth became public.""

I looked down at the photographs.

"Where does Michael fit into this?""

Victoria's face hardened.

"Michael was my son. Your grandfather knew I wanted him to inherit the company. He promised me that if I helped him conceal the switch, Michael would eventually receive a share.""

"And Rachel?""

"Rachel discovered the truth when she began searching through the trust records. She realized that if Evelyn and Helen were both alive, the original inheritance arrangements could be challenged.""

Evelyn looked at her.

"So she tried to steal everything before we could claim it.""

"Exactly.""

I turned toward Victoria.

"And you helped her.""

Victoria didn't deny it.

"I wanted my son to have what he deserved.""

"Michael knew about the switch?""

"Yes.""

"Did he know I was Helen's son?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another person who had known the truth and decided I wasn't worth telling.

I heard a car approaching outside.

Nora went to the window.

Her face changed.

"Police.""

Victoria laughed.

"Finally.""

I looked at her.

"Did you call them?""

"No. But someone did.""

My phone rang.

Mom.

I answered immediately.

"Daniel, where are you?""

"With Victoria. What happened?""

"I need you to come home.""

"Are you safe?""

"Yes. But I found something in your father's study.""

"What?""

"A letter from your grandfather. It explains everything.""

I looked at Victoria.

"What does it say?""

Mom's voice trembled.

"It says the switch wasn't Margaret's idea.""

I froze.

"Whose idea was it?""

"Your father's.""

I stared at Victoria.

She looked away.

Mom continued.

"Robert knew Helen was being threatened. He asked Margaret to help him exchange the babies so he could get you out of the hospital before your grandfather's men arrived.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"So Dad saved me?""

"Yes. But the letter says he didn't know which baby he was taking home.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Then how did the wrong baby end up with Margaret?""

Mom took a shaky breath.

"Because someone changed the hospital bracelets.""

I looked at Nora.

She was crying.

"Who changed them?""

Mom answered.

"Your grandfather.""

The police entered the house.

Victoria raised her hands without resistance.

But before the officers took her away, she turned toward me.

"There's one thing your mother still hasn't told you.""

I stepped forward.

"What?""

Victoria leaned close.

"Your grandfather didn't switch the bracelets to confuse Robert.""

She smiled.

"He wanted to make sure the wrong child inherited the company.""

Then she was gone.

I drove home with Evelyn.

Mom was waiting in the study.

She held a yellowed envelope.

"This is the letter," she said.

I opened it.

My grandfather's handwriting covered three pages.

He admitted that he had ordered the hospital bracelets changed. He wanted Robert to raise the child who carried Victor's blood, believing that child would eventually inherit the company and protect the family from scandal.

But the final paragraph made my hands shake.

If the truth ever comes out, do not trust the child who carries my name. He was never meant to belong to this family.

I looked at Mom.

"Who is he talking about?""

She didn't answer.

Then I heard a voice behind me.

"He's talking about me.""

Michael stood in the doorway.

He was holding a second envelope.

May you like

And on it, in my grandfather's handwriting, were two words:

*Michael Carter.*
