Chapter 4: The Money They Stole in My Name

"How much money did you transfer?""

Eleanor's voice was so quiet that everyone in the lobby seemed to hear it.

Vivian stood frozen beside Marcus.

Her fingers were pressed against her lips, and the confidence she had displayed when she slapped me had completely disappeared.

Marcus stepped toward her.

"Don't say another word.""

Eleanor immediately raised her hand.

"She can answer for herself.""

Vivian looked at Marcus, then at Eleanor.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Eleanor slid the document across the table.

"Then perhaps you can explain this transaction. Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars was transferred from a family investment account into Cross Strategic Consulting six months ago.""

Vivian shook her head.

"That was payment for legitimate consulting work.""

"Consulting work?""

"Yes.""

Eleanor opened another page.

"Your company was registered two weeks before the transfer. It had no employees, no documented clients, and no previous business activity.""

Vivian swallowed.

Marcus grabbed the document.

"Mom, this is an internal accounting matter. I can explain it to the board.""

"Then explain it.""

He looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

I watched him carefully.

This was the same man who had once sat beside me in a fertility clinic, holding my hand while we waited for test results.

The same man who had promised me that our daughter would never have to worry about money.

Now he couldn't even look at me.

Eleanor turned another page.

"There's more.""

She placed a bank authorization form in front of me.

"According to the records, this transfer was approved using your identity.""

I stared at the signature.

It looked almost exactly like mine.

The same slant.

The same looping N.

Even the small line I always added beneath the final letter.

But I hadn't signed it.

"I never authorized this.""

Eleanor nodded.

"I believe you.""

Marcus suddenly spoke.

"She signed the original documents.""

I turned toward him.

"When?""

"At the hospital.""

My stomach tightened.

"Which hospital?""

"When you were admitted.""

I remembered that day.

I had experienced severe cramping and was terrified something was happening to the baby. Marcus had arrived with a folder of insurance and hospital documents.

He had told me there were several forms I needed to sign.

I remembered being exhausted.

I remembered him saying he would handle everything.

"Those were medical forms," I whispered.

"They included financial authorizations.""

"You told me they were insurance papers!""

Marcus looked irritated.

"You're making this more complicated than it needs to be.""

I stared at him.

"You used my hospital admission to steal money?""

Vivian suddenly interrupted.

"Don't act like you were innocent in everything, Natalie.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She lifted her chin.

"Marcus told me you knew about the transfers. He said you agreed because you wanted to protect your daughter financially.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Did you tell her that?""

He didn't answer.

Vivian laughed bitterly.

"Of course you did.""

Then she reached into her purse and removed her phone.

"I have messages.""

Marcus lunged toward her.

"Put that away.""

She stepped backward.

"No. I'm done protecting you.""

The hotel security manager moved closer, but Eleanor raised her hand to stop him.

Vivian unlocked her phone.

"I have months of conversations. Emails. Transfer confirmations. Everything.""

Marcus's voice dropped.

"Vivian, think carefully.""

"I have been thinking carefully for six months!""

She turned the screen toward Eleanor.

"Look at this.""

Eleanor took the phone.

I watched her expression change as she scrolled.

"What am I looking at?""

Vivian pointed to a message.

"Marcus told me the trust would be transferred into a private holding company. He said his mother had already approved it.""

Eleanor looked at her son.

"I never approved any such transfer.""

Vivian scrolled again.

"He also told me Natalie had signed the authorization.""

I felt sick.

Eleanor continued reading.

Then she stopped.

"Who is Daniel Mercer?""

Marcus's face changed.

Nobody spoke.

Vivian answered.

"He's the attorney who prepared the transfer documents.""

Eleanor slowly put the phone down.

"Daniel Mercer has represented this family for twenty-two years.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"He's not involved in this.""

"Then why does his name appear in the correspondence?""

"He was providing legal advice.""

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Without my authorization?""

Marcus didn't answer.

I looked at the messages.

One of them contained a sentence that made my hands go cold.

Once the baby arrives, Natalie won't have the authority to challenge anything. We just need her signature before the birth.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Marcus.

"What did you mean by that?""

He stared at me.

"That's taken out of context.""

"What context makes that acceptable?""

He lowered his voice.

"You don't understand how complicated the business is.""

"I understand that you planned to use my name to take money.""

"That's not what happened.""

Vivian suddenly laughed.

"Really? Because you told me she was just a temporary obstacle.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Shut up.""

"You're the one who promised me everything!""

Eleanor stood.

"Enough.""

She took her phone from her pocket and made a call.

"Mr. Bennett, I need you at Oakmont Hotel immediately. Bring the complete trust records and contact the bank's fraud department.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You're calling the lawyers against your own son?""

Eleanor looked at him.

"I'm calling the people responsible for protecting this family from financial misconduct.""

He shook his head.

"You can't destroy my life over an accounting disagreement.""

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"Your wife was nearly knocked to the floor today. Your unborn daughter has been used in an unauthorized financial transaction. And you are still worried about your life?""

I lowered my eyes.

My baby moved again.

I placed both hands over my stomach.

Eleanor noticed.

"Sweetheart, we're leaving for the hospital.""

Marcus immediately objected.

"I'll take her.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

He seemed shocked.

"Natalie, I'm your husband.""

"Not when you need me to believe you. Not when you need my signature. Not when you need someone to blame.""

His face darkened.

Eleanor took my handbag.

"Let's go.""

But just as we started walking, Vivian spoke again.

"There's something else you should know.""

Eleanor stopped.

"What?""

Vivian looked directly at Marcus.

"He wasn't planning to divorce Natalie because he loved me.""

Marcus's expression turned murderous.

"Vivian, don't.""

She continued.

"He needed her out of the marriage before the trust amendment became effective.""

Eleanor slowly turned around.

"What amendment?""

Vivian swallowed.

"The one that gives Natalie control over the money once the baby is born.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She didn't seem surprised.

Instead, she reached into her folder and removed a document I hadn't seen before.

"That amendment became effective yesterday.""

Marcus's face drained of color.

May you like

And then Eleanor revealed the part he had apparently never expected.

"Your grandfather didn't leave the money to you, Marcus. He left it to the next generation.""
