Chapter 10: The Secret Margaret Had Been Hiding for Twenty Years
Eleanor stood in the middle of the bedroom, staring at the security report.
Margaret Ellis had worked for her family for twenty-three years.
She had attended birthdays, funerals, business celebrations, and private family meetings. She knew the security codes, the household schedules, and where Eleanor kept documents that even Marcus had never seen.
And now her access card had been used to help Vivian enter the house.
"Find her," Eleanor told Richard.
"I want to know where she is before sunrise.""
Richard immediately contacted the security team.
I sat on the edge of the bed, still trembling.
"How could someone you've trusted for so long do something like this?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Sometimes people stay close to a family because they are waiting for something.""
"What could Margaret possibly want?""
Eleanor didn't answer.
Instead, she walked to the bedside table and picked up the leather folder she had brought from the hotel.
"There is something about William's final instructions that I never fully understood.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Mrs. Hale?""
Eleanor opened the folder.
"After my husband died, William became increasingly suspicious of the people handling his business affairs. He believed someone had been moving money through companies that appeared legitimate.""
"Was Margaret involved?"" I asked.
"I don't know. But she had access to his correspondence.""
Eleanor removed a photograph.
It showed William sitting behind his office desk, with a younger Margaret standing beside him.
I recognized the office.
It was the same room Marcus had once forbidden me to enter.
Eleanor turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten note.
Margaret knows where the original documents are. Trust nobody until the child is born.
I stared at the words.
"Your father wrote that?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't understand what he meant.""
Richard examined the photograph.
"Do you know which original documents he was referring to?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"There was a sealed estate package that disappeared shortly before his death. The attorney believed it contained supplemental instructions for the trust.""
"Could Margaret have taken it?""
"Possibly.""
Richard received a notification.
He checked his phone.
"We have a location.""
Eleanor immediately stood.
"Where?""
"Margaret's vehicle was recorded entering Vivian's residential property forty minutes ago. But the vehicle has since left.""
"Did you follow it?""
"Security has located it near the old Hale corporate offices.""
Eleanor looked confused.
"Those offices have been closed for years.""
Richard nodded.
"Exactly.""
I felt a strange chill.
"Why would she go there?""
Eleanor looked toward the photograph.
"Because William's private archive was kept in that building.""
Richard called the security director and requested that nobody enter the property until the police could assist with the investigation.
Eleanor turned to me.
"You're staying here.""
I shook my head.
"I need to know what's happening.""
"You need to rest.""
"I've spent months being told to stay quiet while everyone makes decisions about my life. I'm not doing that anymore.""
Eleanor studied my face.
Then she nodded.
"All right. But you will not put yourself in danger.""
An hour later, Richard returned with an update.
Margaret had been located.
She was sitting inside the old corporate building.
And she had requested to speak with Eleanor alone.
We arrived with security personnel shortly afterward.
The building smelled of dust, old carpet, and furniture polish. Most of the offices had been emptied years earlier.
A single light remained on at the end of the hallway.
Margaret was sitting behind a desk.
Her silver hair was tied into a neat bun, and her hands rested on a thick envelope.
When Eleanor entered, Margaret stood.
"Mrs. Hale.""
Eleanor didn't return the greeting.
"Why did you let Vivian into my home?""
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"I made a mistake.""
"A mistake?""
"I thought I was protecting the family.""
"By helping a woman who assaulted my pregnant daughter-in-law?""
Margaret flinched.
"I didn't know she would come here.""
Eleanor stepped closer.
"Then explain the access card.""
Margaret looked at the envelope.
"Marcus asked me for information.""
"What information?""
"The original trust documents.""
Richard immediately moved closer.
"Did you provide them?""
Margaret nodded.
"Some of them.""
Eleanor's face hardened.
"Why?""
Margaret took a shaky breath.
"Because William asked me to keep a secret.""
She opened the envelope.
Inside were several handwritten letters, an old photograph, and a sealed document bearing William Hale's signature.
I stared at the envelope.
"Is that the missing estate package?""
Margaret nodded.
"Part of it.""
Eleanor looked almost angry enough to shout.
"Where have you kept this all these years?""
"In a private storage unit.""
"Why?""
Margaret finally looked up.
"Because William told me that if anything happened to him, I was to release it only when someone tried to take the inheritance from his future grandchild.""
The room went silent.
Richard reached for the document.
"May I examine it?""
Margaret nodded.
He carefully opened the envelope.
The first page contained a letter addressed to Eleanor.
The second was addressed to Marcus.
The third had my name.
I felt my heart race.
"Why would William write to me?""
Margaret looked at me.
"Because he knew something about your husband before you did.""
Eleanor picked up her letter.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she sat down.
"What is it?"" Richard asked.
She didn't answer.
Instead, she handed him the letter.
Richard read it silently.
His expression changed.
"Mrs. Hale, this is significant.""
"What does it say?"" I asked.
Eleanor looked at me.
"William discovered that Marcus had been attempting to divert company funds before you were even married.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Your grandfather-in-law suspected that his grandson had been working with an outside business partner to move money into private accounts.""
Richard turned to the next page.
"And he documented the arrangement.""
Margaret spoke quietly.
"The outside partner was Vivian's father.""
I looked up.
"Vivian's father?""
"His name was Robert Cross. He worked with Hale Holdings for several years.""
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"Robert disappeared after an internal audit revealed missing funds. William believed Marcus had helped him.""
Richard examined the document.
"There's a list of transactions here.""
Margaret pointed to the final page.
"And there is another name.""
I looked.
The name belonged to Daniel Mercer.
The attorney who had supposedly been helping Marcus with legitimate business matters.
Eleanor closed the letter.
"So this has been going on for years.""
Margaret nodded.
"William believed the original fraud had never stopped. He thought Marcus was waiting for an opportunity to gain control of the trust.""
I looked at the sealed document.
"What does mine say?""
Margaret hesitated.
Then she handed it to me.
The letter was short.
Natalie, if you are reading this, it means someone has attempted to use your position in this family against you. Do not let them convince you that you are powerless. The child you carry has a right to the truth, and so do you.
My eyes filled with tears.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
The person who controls the trust is not necessarily the person who owns it.
I looked at Richard.
"What does that mean?""
He examined the document.
Before he could answer, Margaret spoke.
"It means William appointed someone to oversee the trust independently of Eleanor, Marcus, and the company.""
Eleanor slowly turned.
"Who?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"Natalie.""
I couldn't breathe.
Richard checked the accompanying legal documents.
Then he looked up.
"She's right. The appointment is valid, subject to verification of the original instrument.""
Eleanor stared at the papers.
For the first time that night, she smiled.
But Margaret wasn't finished.
She opened a small photograph album.
Inside was a photograph of Marcus as a teenager, standing beside William and another man.
I recognized the third person.
It was Robert Cross.
On the back, William had written:
The beginning of the arrangement that nearly destroyed this family.
Margaret looked at Eleanor.
"There's something else. Robert Cross didn't disappear alone.""
Eleanor's smile vanished.
"Who disappeared with him?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"Someone who was supposed to protect the trust.""
May you like
Then she revealed the name.
And it was someone we all believed had been dead for twelve years.
