Chapter 14: The Truth Behind My Husband's Final Betrayal

Daniel Mercer sat in a small interview room at the police station.

His expensive suit was wrinkled, his tie was loose, and his usual confidence had disappeared.

When I entered with Richard and an officer, he looked directly at me.

"Thank you for coming.""

I remained standing.

"What do you want?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I need to tell you what Marcus is planning.""

Richard placed a recorder on the table.

"Before we begin, understand that this conversation is being documented.""

Daniel nodded.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus has been preparing for this moment since before your wedding.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What moment?""

"The moment he could gain control of the Hale Family Trust.""

I sat down.

"Why?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Because the trust contains assets worth considerably more than the public company accounts show. Marcus believed that if he could gain control of the trust, he could use those assets to cover years of unauthorized transactions.""

Richard interrupted.

"You're admitting knowledge of financial misconduct?""

Daniel looked at him.

"I'm admitting that I helped prepare documents I should never have prepared.""

I stared at him.

"Did you forge my signature?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I prepared the documents. Marcus supplied the signature files.""

My chest tightened.

"Did you know I hadn't signed them?""

"Yes.""

The answer came without hesitation.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked, "Why?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Marcus told me the marriage was already ending. He said you had agreed to the financial arrangements.""

"That doesn't explain why you created a fake medical assessment.""

His expression changed.

"That was Vivian.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Explain.""

Daniel took a breath.

"Vivian hired a private investigator who obtained copies of Natalie's medical information. She then arranged for a report to be created using a false patient profile.""

"Who was the doctor?""

"Dr. Rebecca Sloan.""

"Was she involved?""

Daniel nodded.

"She was paid to approve the report without examining Natalie.""

I closed my eyes.

Another person had been willing to risk my reputation for money.

Daniel continued.

"The guardianship application was supposed to be temporary. Marcus intended to use it to establish legal control over the child while he transferred the trust assets.""

Richard's voice became cold.

"How was that supposed to work?""

Daniel explained that Marcus planned to argue that I was financially unstable and emotionally incapable of managing the inheritance.

He would then seek temporary authority over the child's financial interests.

Vivian would be presented as a suitable secondary caregiver.

Once the guardianship application was approved, Marcus intended to move the assets into the private holding company.

"And then?"" I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"Then he planned to leave the country.""

I stared at him.

"With Vivian?""

Daniel nodded.

"After the transfers cleared.""

Richard opened his notebook.

"Where?""

"Portugal. Marcus had arranged a property purchase through an overseas company.""

I felt physically sick.

He had planned to take the money, leave the country, and abandon me with the consequences.

"What about our daughter?""

Daniel looked down.

"Marcus intended to take her with him.""

I stood abruptly.

"No.""

Daniel raised his hands.

"That was the plan he discussed.""

"She is not a business asset!""

"I know.""

I looked at Richard.

"Can we stop him?""

Richard nodded.

"We'll provide this information to the investigators immediately.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"There's something else.""

Richard looked at him.

"What?""

"Marcus isn't acting alone anymore. Vivian has her own financial arrangement with Robert Cross.""

Thomas, who had been waiting outside with Eleanor, entered the room.

"Robert is supposed to be missing.""

Daniel shook his head.

"He's alive.""

Thomas froze.

"Where?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Marcus has been communicating with him through an intermediary. Robert is the person who arranged the overseas accounts.""

Thomas stepped closer.

"Why would he come back now?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Because Marcus promised him the original trust declaration.""

Richard stood.

"We need to locate Robert Cross immediately.""

Daniel nodded.

"I have an address.""

He wrote it on a piece of paper.

Then he looked at me.

"Natalie, I need you to understand something. Marcus believes the original letter contains a provision that could destroy his control over the company.""

"What provision?""

Daniel swallowed.

"It identifies the person who becomes the controlling protector of the family trust when a direct beneficiary is threatened.""

I looked at Richard.

"That's me?""

"Yes," he answered.

"Once the duplicate declaration is authenticated, your authority can be formally recognized.""

Daniel shook his head.

"There's one more thing. Marcus believes the letter contains a second clause.""

"What clause?""

"One that gives the independent protector the authority to remove an executive from every family-controlled business if financial misconduct is established.""

Thomas looked at Richard.

"That would include Marcus.""

Richard nodded.

"Potentially, yes.""

I sat down again.

For three years, Marcus had treated me like someone who needed his permission to make decisions.

Now I was learning that the man who had threatened to throw me out of our home could lose everything because of the very documents he had tried to steal.

But I didn't feel victorious.

I felt exhausted.

I wanted my daughter.

I wanted a quiet home.

I wanted to stop wondering whether every person who smiled at me was secretly working against me.

That evening, Richard arranged for me to meet the estate administrator.

The office was inside a secure legal building.

A woman named Helen Parker greeted us and verified my identity.

She placed a sealed package on the desk.

"Natalie, this was prepared by William Hale before his death. It has remained under independent custody for years.""

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was the duplicate beneficiary declaration.

There was also a personal letter.

I unfolded it.

Natalie, if you have reached this point, someone has attempted to take what belongs to the next generation.

I stopped reading.

My eyes filled with tears.

The letter continued.

I did not choose you because you married my grandson. I chose you because I watched how you treated people when you believed nobody important was watching.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

You do not owe this family your silence. You do not owe Marcus your obedience. And you do not have to sacrifice your peace to preserve a family name.

I wiped my cheeks.

At the bottom was a final paragraph.

If Marcus has become the danger I feared, remove him from the decisions that concern this child's future. Love does not require you to protect someone from the consequences of their own actions.

Richard examined the declaration.

Helen verified the seals.

Then she signed the official acknowledgment.

"The appointment is valid," she said.

I looked at her.

"What happens now?""

"Your authority as independent protector is formally activated. The trustees will receive notice, and Marcus's access to protected assets will remain suspended during the investigation.""

For the first time, I felt the balance shift.

Not because I had gained power over Marcus.

Because he could no longer use power over me.

But the moment we left the office, Richard received an urgent call.

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

"Where is she?""

A pause.

"Is the child safe?""

I felt my heart stop.

"What happened?""

Richard ended the call.

He looked at me.

"Vivian has been located.""

"Where?""

"At the private residence where the transportation company was supposed to take your daughter.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Why was she there?""

Richard swallowed.

"She was waiting for Marcus.""

Thomas frowned.

"Was he with her?""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

Then he turned his phone toward us.

A photograph showed Vivian standing outside the property beside a suitcase.

Behind her was a second person.

A man with gray hair and glasses.

Thomas stared at the screen.

His face went white.

"Robert Cross.""

May you like

The man everyone thought had disappeared was standing beside Vivian.

And in his hand was the original letter Marcus had stolen.
