Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Inside the Family Trust
Marcus looked at his mother as though she had personally betrayed him.
"Who told you that?""
Eleanor didn't blink.
"You did.""
"I never said Natalie attacked Vivian.""
"You called me forty minutes ago and said there had been an unfortunate confrontation. You said Natalie became aggressive, Vivian defended herself, and you needed me to calm things down.""
Vivian immediately stepped forward.
"That's not exactly what he meant.""
Eleanor turned.
"Then perhaps you can explain why the hotel recording shows you striking a pregnant woman who was standing several feet away from you.""
Vivian's lips parted.
No answer came.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Mom, you're making a mistake.""
"Am I?""
"You're taking her side without understanding the circumstances.""
Eleanor closed the tablet.
"I watched the circumstances.""
He looked around the lobby.
People were still pretending not to listen.
"Can we get out of here?""
"No.""
"Mom, please.""
"Stop calling me Mom as though that word gives you permission to disrespect your family.""
The silence that followed was uncomfortable.
I looked down at my hands.
My left hand was trembling.
Eleanor noticed and gently squeezed it.
"You're all right, sweetheart. Take your time.""
I swallowed.
"Why did Marcus tell you I attacked Vivian?""
Eleanor looked at her son.
"That's what I'd like to know.""
Marcus pulled out his phone.
"I have business matters to handle. We can talk tonight.""
Eleanor's voice became sharper.
"Sit down.""
"I'm not a child.""
"Then stop behaving like one.""
He stared at her before finally taking the chair opposite us.
Vivian remained standing.
Eleanor opened the leather folder.
"Three weeks ago, I received a letter from the estate attorney. It concerned the Hale Family Legacy Trust.""
Marcus's eyes moved toward the folder.
"What's in there?""
"An amendment.""
He leaned forward.
"What amendment?""
Eleanor removed a document and placed it on the table.
"The original trust was established by your grandfather, William Hale, nearly thirty years ago. It was designed to protect the family's assets and ensure that the next generation would inherit responsibly.""
Marcus nodded impatiently.
"I know how the trust works.""
"Apparently, you don't.""
She continued.
"Your grandfather made several provisions that would take effect once his grandchildren entered adulthood and established families of their own.""
I frowned.
"Grandchildren?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Your daughter is included.""
I instinctively placed my hand over my stomach.
Marcus leaned back.
"Mom, I don't understand why Natalie needs to be involved in this conversation.""
"Because she is carrying a child who is named in the amendment.""
Vivian finally spoke.
"Named how?""
Eleanor looked at her.
"That is none of your concern.""
Vivian's cheeks reddened.
Marcus reached for the document.
This time, Eleanor allowed him to take it.
He scanned the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
"That's impossible.""
Eleanor folded her hands.
"Which part?""
"Grandfather never intended this.""
"He signed it.""
"Years ago!""
"Yes. And the amendment was reviewed by independent counsel.""
Marcus dropped the papers.
"This is ridiculous. I have managed Hale Holdings for five years. I built the company into what it is today. I should have control over these decisions.""
Eleanor stared at him.
"You manage the company. You do not own every asset connected to it.""
"Then who does?""
She looked at me.
"Natalie and the child she is carrying have been granted protections that you cannot simply remove.""
I couldn't process what she was saying.
"Mrs. Hale, I don't understand. I never asked for anything.""
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"I know. That's one of the reasons your grandfather trusted you.""
I looked at Marcus.
He was staring at the documents with an expression I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Fear.
Vivian noticed it too.
She moved closer to him and whispered something.
He shook his head.
Then she asked Eleanor, "How much is involved?""
Eleanor slowly turned.
"Excuse me?""
Vivian forced a smile.
"I'm simply trying to understand why everyone is behaving as though this document changes everything.""
Eleanor closed the folder.
"Because it does.""
Marcus stood abruptly.
"I want to speak with you privately.""
"About what?""
"About the amendment.""
"No.""
"Mom!""
Eleanor's voice remained steady.
"Whatever you have to say can be said in front of your wife.""
He looked at me with open resentment.
"She doesn't need to be here.""
I stared back at him.
"Funny. You seemed perfectly comfortable making decisions about my life without me.""
His mouth tightened.
Eleanor almost smiled.
"Perhaps you should listen to her.""
Marcus walked toward the window, dragging a hand through his hair.
Vivian followed him.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
He turned toward her.
"Not now.""
"Not now? You told me everything was settled!""
Eleanor raised an eyebrow.
"Everything?""
Vivian realized her mistake.
She stepped back.
Marcus looked furious.
"Vivian, stop talking.""
But I had already heard enough.
"What did he tell you?"" I asked.
Vivian looked at me.
"Stay out of this.""
"You slapped me because you believed you were going to become his wife. What exactly did he promise you?""
Marcus moved toward us.
"That's enough.""
I didn't move.
"Did you promise her my house? My daughter's inheritance? Our family money?""
Vivian laughed nervously.
"Your house?""
Eleanor suddenly looked up.
"What house?""
I turned toward her.
"The house Marcus and I live in. He told me it was purchased through his company.""
Eleanor's expression became unreadable.
"Did he?""
"Yes.""
Marcus immediately interrupted.
"This conversation is going nowhere.""
Eleanor removed another paper from the folder.
"That's interesting.""
She placed it in front of me.
It was a property ownership record.
My name appeared near the top.
So did Eleanor's.
I stared at the document.
"What does this mean?""
Eleanor explained carefully.
"Your home was purchased through a family property arrangement. Your grandfather-in-law insisted that the residence be protected from business creditors and personal disputes.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That arrangement was temporary.""
"No," Eleanor replied.
"It was permanent.""
He pointed at the paper.
"She cannot own that property independently.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"She doesn't need to own it independently. The trust protects her right to remain there with her child.""
I felt dizzy.
For three years, Marcus had told me that everything we had belonged to him because he was the one earning the money.
He had even threatened to throw me out during our worst arguments.
Now I was learning that the home I had begged him not to take away was never entirely under his control.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
She opened a smaller envelope and removed a letter.
"This was delivered to my office two days ago.""
Marcus went completely still.
Eleanor placed the letter beside the property record.
"The estate attorney received evidence that someone attempted to transfer several family assets into a private company without authorization.""
I looked at Marcus.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Eleanor continued.
"The company was registered six months ago. Its director is listed as Vivian Cross.""
Vivian's face went white.
"That's a lie.""
Eleanor calmly turned the document toward her.
"Would you like to explain your signature?""
Marcus grabbed the paper.
"Mom, you don't understand what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
He looked at Vivian.
She looked back at him.
For the first time, neither of them seemed certain what the other would say.
Eleanor leaned forward.
"Marcus, did you use company funds to establish this private entity?""
He said nothing.
"Did you attempt to move family property into it?""
Still nothing.
Then Eleanor asked the question that made my blood run cold.
"And did you use your unborn daughter's name to authorize a financial transaction?""
I felt the room tilt.
"My daughter's name?""
Eleanor turned toward me.
"I'm afraid there's something else you need to see.""
She removed a final document from the folder.
At the bottom was a signature.
My signature.
Except I had never signed it.
I stared at the page.
My name had been used to authorize a transaction connected to the family trust.
And the date beside it was from a day I remembered perfectly.
The day I had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing complications with my pregnancy.
I looked at Marcus.
"How did you get my signature?""
He finally raised his eyes.
And before he could answer, Vivian whispered something that changed the entire room.
"Marcus, you told me she would never find out about the money we transferred.""
Eleanor slowly turned toward her.
"What money?""
Vivian covered her mouth.
May you like
Marcus closed his eyes.
And I realized the affair was only the beginning of what my husband had done.
