Chapter 12: The Uncle Who Knew My Husband's Darkest Secret
Thomas Hale chose a small private conference room at a hotel outside Charlotte.
We arrived shortly before noon.
Eleanor had barely spoken during the drive.
She kept looking at an old photograph of Thomas and her late husband.
I sat beside her, one hand resting over my stomach.
Richard walked ahead of us.
Two security officers followed.
When the conference room door opened, I saw a man standing beside the window.
He turned.
For a moment, Eleanor couldn't move.
Then she whispered, "Thomas.""
The man stared at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Eleanor.""
She crossed the room and threw her arms around him.
Thomas held her tightly.
They stood like that for nearly a minute.
Then Eleanor pulled away and slapped his shoulder.
"Do you have any idea what you've put this family through?""
Thomas lowered his head.
"I know.""
"Twelve years, Thomas. Twelve years.""
"I couldn't come back.""
"Why?""
He looked toward Richard.
"Because I didn't know who I could trust.""
Eleanor wiped her cheeks.
Then she stepped aside.
"This is Natalie.""
Thomas turned toward me.
His expression softened.
"I've wanted to meet you for a long time.""
I was confused.
"Why?""
He pulled out a chair.
"Please sit.""
Once everyone was seated, Thomas placed a thick envelope on the table.
"William told me about you before he died.""
I looked at him.
"You knew my grandfather-in-law?""
"Very well. He was my older brother.""
He smiled faintly.
"He told me Marcus had finally found someone who cared more about people than money.""
I swallowed.
"He was kind to me.""
"That's why he trusted you.""
Thomas opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of bank statements, old company correspondence, and a handwritten letter from William.
"Robert Cross started stealing money from Hale Holdings almost fifteen years ago," Thomas explained.
"At first, the amounts were small. Fake consulting invoices. Payments to companies that existed only on paper.""
Eleanor listened without interrupting.
"Marcus discovered what Robert was doing and joined him. They created a system that moved money through several private companies.""
Richard examined the records.
"Was Daniel Mercer involved from the beginning?""
Thomas nodded.
"Daniel helped create the legal structure. He made sure the companies looked legitimate.""
I looked at the papers.
"Why didn't William report them?""
"He intended to. But he wanted to gather enough evidence to protect the company and the employees who depended on it.""
Thomas turned to Eleanor.
"Then Robert discovered what William was doing.""
Eleanor's face tightened.
"Is that why you disappeared?""
Thomas nodded.
"I found out that Marcus had obtained copies of the investigation. He knew William was preparing to expose everything.""
Thomas explained that he had confronted Marcus privately.
At first, Marcus denied everything.
Then he offered Thomas money to remain silent.
When Thomas refused, the threats began.
One evening, Thomas discovered that someone had broken into his home and searched his office.
He realized he was being followed.
A few days later, his boat was found abandoned near the coast.
He had deliberately disappeared with the help of an old friend, leaving evidence that suggested he had drowned.
"I thought I could expose them from a distance," Thomas said.
"But I underestimated how deeply the scheme had spread.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"You should have trusted me.""
Thomas looked at her sadly.
"I should have.""
He turned toward me.
"But there is another reason I wanted to meet you.""
He removed a separate document.
It was an original letter from William.
I recognized his handwriting.
Thomas placed it in front of me.
"Your grandfather-in-law knew Marcus might eventually try to use your marriage to gain control of the trust.""
I looked down.
The letter contained specific instructions concerning the unborn child.
It also identified the person who would become the child's independent financial guardian.
My name appeared again.
But this time, another name appeared beneath mine.
Thomas Hale.
I looked up.
"You're supposed to be the second trustee?""
Thomas nodded.
"William wanted someone outside Marcus's immediate control to protect the child's interests.""
Richard examined the signatures.
"The document appears consistent with the earlier amendment.""
Eleanor looked at her brother-in-law.
"Why didn't you reveal yourself when William died?""
Thomas sighed.
"Because Marcus still controlled the company, and I didn't have enough evidence to challenge him. I needed the original records.""
He opened another folder.
"And now I have them.""
Inside was a detailed ledger identifying the companies involved in the missing transfers.
Several names matched those already discovered by Richard.
But one entry caught my attention.
A payment had been made to a private investigator.
The recipient's name was listed as Robert Cross.
I looked at Thomas.
"What was he investigating?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he answered.
"Your marriage.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why?""
Thomas placed another document on the table.
It was a report dated shortly before Marcus proposed to me.
The investigator had been hired to examine my finances, employment history, family background, and medical records.
I stared at the pages.
"Why would Marcus investigate me before marrying me?""
Thomas's expression was grim.
"Because he wanted to know whether you would become a threat to his plans.""
I couldn't speak.
Thomas continued.
"Your grandfather-in-law had already decided that you were the person he wanted protecting the next generation. Marcus knew William was considering changing the trust.""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"So the marriage was part of his plan?""
Thomas shook his head.
"Not necessarily at first. But once Marcus realized how much William trusted Natalie, he began treating the marriage as an opportunity.""
I felt sick.
Three years of memories suddenly seemed contaminated.
The wedding.
The promises.
The fertility treatments.
Every moment I had believed we were building a family.
I looked at Thomas.
"Did Marcus ever love me?""
He was silent for a long time.
Finally, he said, "I can't answer that. But I can tell you what he planned.""
He slid a final document toward me.
It was a private business proposal dated six months before our wedding.
The title read:
*Hale Family Trust Restructuring — Beneficiary Control Strategy.*
The proposal described how a future spouse could be persuaded to sign financial waivers and how a child's inheritance could be redirected through a family-controlled company.
At the bottom was Marcus's signature.
I pushed the document away.
Eleanor reached for my hand.
"Natalie, I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"I just want my daughter to be safe.""
Thomas nodded.
"She will be.""
He reached into his jacket and removed a small key.
"William gave me this shortly before his death.""
Richard leaned forward.
"What does it open?""
Thomas looked at me.
"The original archive room beneath the old Hale corporate headquarters.""
I remembered Margaret saying the original documents were stored there.
Thomas continued.
"There's a second safe inside. William kept something there that could prove exactly how the money was stolen.""
Eleanor looked at the key.
"Why didn't you retrieve it?""
"Because the safe requires two authorized signatures.""
Richard frowned.
"Whose signatures?""
Thomas turned the key over.
Two names were engraved on a small metal tag.
Eleanor Hale.
And Marcus Hale.
Eleanor looked stunned.
"Marcus still has access?""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes. But the safe has another protection. It cannot be opened if either authorized party has formally disputed the estate instructions.""
Richard immediately understood.
"Which means we need to establish who currently has authority.""
Thomas looked at me.
"That's why William appointed you.""
I stared at him.
"Can I open it?""
Thomas nodded.
"With the original beneficiary certificate, yes.""
Richard began gathering the documents.
"We need to retrieve that certificate and secure the archive before Marcus learns we've found Thomas.""
But as we stood, Thomas's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
"What's wrong?"" Eleanor asked.
Thomas answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Mr. Hale, you need to get out of that building.""
Thomas straightened.
"Who is this?""
The caller spoke quickly.
"Marcus knows you're alive. He's already heading there.""
Thomas looked at Richard.
"How did he find out?""
The caller lowered his voice.
"Because someone inside your legal team has been sending him updates.""
Richard went completely still.
Then the caller delivered the final warning.
"And Mr. Hale, don't go anywhere near the old archive.""
Thomas tightened his grip on the phone.
"Why?""
There was a brief silence.
May you like
Then the man answered.
"Because Marcus has already opened the safe.""
