Chapter 9: The Father Who Disappeared
I stared at the email for nearly a minute.
Michael.
The man who had disappeared from our lives eight years earlier.
The man who had left me alone with a newborn baby and a mountain of medical bills.
The man who had once promised he would never become like his own father.
I had spent years trying to forget him.
Now his name was appearing on the screen beside my father's final recording.
Daniel looked at me.
"Do you want to open it?""
I shook my head.
"Not yet.""
Graham pulled a chair beside me.
"Claire, whatever he knows, you don't have to deal with it alone.""
I appreciated the words.
But I couldn't stop looking at that email.
Finally, I clicked it.
There were only three sentences.
Claire, I know what happened to Robert's trust.
I know why your mother came to the hospital that night.
And I know the real reason they wanted Lily.
At the bottom was an address.
A small diner near Providence Harbor.
And a time.
Midnight.
I checked the clock.
11:18 p.m.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"Absolutely not.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because this could be a trap.""
"He's Lily's father.""
"That doesn't make him trustworthy.""
Graham nodded.
"Daniel is right. We should contact the authorities and arrange a secure meeting.""
I looked at the email again.
Michael had not contacted us in years.
He had ignored every message I sent.
He had never asked whether Lily was healthy, happy, or safe.
Why now?
I looked down at my daughter.
She was sitting quietly, holding the little yellow cardigan closed around herself.
"Mommy?""
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Is that my dad?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
She looked at the screen.
"Does he want to see me?""
I didn't know what to say.
"I think he wants to talk to me first.""
Lily nodded.
Then she asked quietly, "Did he leave because he didn't like me?""
My heart broke.
I pulled her into my arms.
"No, baby. Nothing about his leaving was your fault.""
"But he never came back.""
"I know.""
"Maybe he forgot.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Some people make choices they can never explain properly. But you have never been someone who was easy to forget.""
She rested her head against my shoulder.
I looked at Daniel.
"We need to hear what he knows.""
Daniel considered it.
"Then we do it safely.""
He called Mr. Mason, who contacted the attorney handling the trust investigation.
Within twenty minutes, arrangements had been made for a monitored meeting at a nearby police station.
But Michael didn't agree.
He sent another email.
No police. No lawyers. Just you.
Then another message appeared.
If you bring anyone, I'll leave.
I laughed bitterly.
Even after eight years, he still believed he could dictate the terms of my life.
Daniel read the message.
"He's trying to control the situation.""
"I know.""
"Then don't go.""
I looked at the photograph of my father on the laptop.
He had written that Lily's biological father had been at the hospital.
I needed to understand why.
And I needed to know what my mother had been hiding.
"I'll meet him in a public place. I'll have security nearby.""
Daniel hesitated.
"Claire—"
"I've spent eight years being afraid of what my family might do next. I'm done.""
Graham offered to accompany me.
I accepted.
Lily stayed with Emily and Daniel at the estate while we drove toward the harbor.
The diner was almost empty when we arrived.
A neon sign buzzed above the entrance.
Inside, a waitress was wiping down the counter.
I saw Michael immediately.
He sat in the farthest booth, wearing a faded navy jacket.
His hair was longer than I remembered.
His face looked older.
He stood when he saw me.
"Claire.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Michael.""
His eyes moved toward Graham.
"Who's he?""
"Someone who has helped my daughter tonight.""
Michael gave a humorless laugh.
"Your daughter?""
I stared at him.
"Yes. My daughter.""
He lowered his eyes.
"I deserved that.""
Graham remained standing.
"I'm going to stay here.""
Michael nodded.
"Fine.""
I sat opposite him.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at me.
"How is Lily?""
The question was so ordinary that it almost made me angry.
"You don't get to ask that like you've been involved.""
He swallowed.
"You're right.""
"Why are you contacting me now?""
"Because I saw the wedding footage.""
My stomach tightened.
"What footage?""
"Someone sent me a video of the ballroom.""
"Who?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"Then how did you know about the trust?""
Michael rubbed his face.
"Because I helped your mother get access to the hospital records.""
I felt cold.
"Why?""
He looked directly at me.
"Because Richard Ellison paid me.""
I couldn't speak.
Graham pulled out a chair.
"How much?""
Michael looked at him.
"Fifty thousand dollars.""
Graham's face hardened.
"For what?""
"To sign a statement saying Claire had been mentally unstable after giving birth and couldn't manage her financial affairs.""
My hands began trembling.
I remembered those weeks.
I remembered crying because Lily wouldn't sleep.
I remembered feeling overwhelmed.
I remembered my mother telling me I was a terrible wife because Michael had left.
I remembered wondering whether I was capable of raising my daughter alone.
They had used my pain as evidence against me.
I stared at Michael.
"And you agreed?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I owed money.""
I laughed.
"You abandoned your daughter for fifty thousand dollars?""
He lowered his head.
"I know how it sounds.""
"No, Michael. You know exactly how it sounds.""
He reached into his jacket and removed a folded envelope.
"I kept copies of everything.""
He placed it on the table.
Inside were bank transfers, signed statements, and photocopies of correspondence between Richard, Patricia, and Michael.
Graham examined the first page.
"This is a payment record.""
Michael nodded.
"Richard transferred the money through a consulting company. Patricia arranged the hospital visit.""
I looked at the documents.
My mother's signature appeared on several pages.
I felt physically sick.
Then I noticed something else.
A line in the correspondence caught my eye.
*Subject: Custody Contingency.*
I read the attached paragraph.
If Claire refuses to cooperate with the transfer, the maternal fitness issue should be escalated. The child can be placed under temporary family guardianship until the financial arrangement is completed.
My vision blurred.
"They wanted to take Lily?""
Michael looked down.
"Not permanently.""
I slapped my palm against the table.
"Don't you dare make that sound better!""
He flinched.
"They were planning to use custody proceedings to force you to sign.""
I stood.
Graham gently touched my arm.
"Claire.""
I sat again, breathing hard.
Michael reached into his bag.
"There is one more thing.""
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed my mother standing outside the hospital.
Beside her was Richard Ellison.
And beside Richard was a woman holding a baby carrier.
I leaned closer.
The woman looked familiar.
Then I recognized her.
It was Vanessa.
She was standing beside my mother on the day Lily was born.
I looked up.
"Why was Vanessa there?""
Michael hesitated.
"Because she was the one who arranged the first payment.""
Graham stared at the photograph.
"You're saying Vanessa arranged this?""
Michael nodded.
"She contacted me two months before Lily was born. She told me the family wanted to make sure Claire couldn't interfere with the trust.""
My hands began shaking again.
"Why would my sister want custody of my daughter?""
Michael looked toward the window.
"Because Richard had promised her something.""
"What?""
He took a long breath.
"Control of the Harbor Point properties.""
Graham stood abruptly.
"That's impossible. Those properties were never supposed to be transferred to Vanessa.""
Michael gave him a tired look.
"That's what Richard promised.""
Then he turned toward me.
"But there's something you don't know about Vanessa.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?""
Michael slid another document across the table.
It was a birth certificate.
Lily's birth certificate.
But beneath the original registration details was a separate court filing.
A request to amend her legal guardianship.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
*To be activated if Claire becomes financially or medically unfit.*
I stared at the paper.
Then I noticed the date.
It had been filed just three weeks after Lily was born.
I looked at Michael.
"Did Vanessa know about this?""
He nodded.
"She helped arrange it.""
"Why?""
Michael hesitated.
Then he said something I never expected.
"Because Vanessa believed Lily was the only person standing between her and everything your father had promised her.""
I stared at him.
"That makes no sense. Lily was a baby.""
Michael's face tightened.
"Claire, there's another reason your father made Lily the protected beneficiary.""
He leaned closer.
"Your father discovered that the person who had been secretly funding Vanessa's business wasn't Richard Ellison.""
I looked at Graham.
His expression had gone completely still.
Michael continued.
"It was someone inside the Bennett family.""
I felt my heart pound.
"Who?""
Michael reached into the envelope and pulled out one final photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man outside a courthouse.
The man was holding a newborn baby.
But it wasn't Lily.
It was a little boy.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
*Vanessa's son. Born seven months before Lily.*
I looked up in disbelief.
"Vanessa has a child?""
Michael nodded.
"She gave birth before she met Graham. She told everyone the baby had been adopted.""
Graham slowly sat down.
"Why would that matter to the trust?""
Michael looked at me.
"Because your father discovered that Vanessa's son had been registered under another name.""
He paused.
"And the person listed as the child's father was someone whose identity could destroy the entire Ellison family.""
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
I answered immediately.
"Daniel?""
His voice sounded urgent.
"Claire, you need to come back to the estate.""
"What happened?""
"Your mother has disappeared.""
My stomach dropped.
"Where's Lily?""
"She's safe.""
"Then what's wrong?""
Daniel paused.
"Because Vanessa just confessed something to the police.""
I gripped the phone.
"What?""
His next words made my blood run cold.
"She says Lily isn't the only child your father protected.""
A second later, another message appeared on my phone.
It was from an unknown number.
A photograph.
A little boy standing outside the Rosewood Estate.
May you like
And beneath it, four words:
*Your sister's son is here.*
