Chapter 8: Richard Ellison's Final Offer

Richard Ellison didn't look like a man who had just been accused of participating in a multimillion-dollar fraud.

His coat was perfectly pressed.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His expensive watch caught the light whenever he moved his hand.

He looked like the kind of man people trusted with their retirement savings.

That was what frightened me most.

He wasn't angry.

He was calculating.

"Claire," he said, "I understand you've had a difficult evening.""

I stared at him.

"You helped my mother and sister steal my daughter's inheritance.""

Richard sighed.

"That's an emotional interpretation.""

Graham stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Richard turned toward his son.

"You're upset. I understand.""

"You threatened an eight-year-old girl.""

"I made an observation.""

Graham's jaw tightened.

"Stay away from Lily.""

Richard ignored him.

He reached into his coat and removed a business card.

"Claire, I'd like to offer you an opportunity to resolve this situation privately.""

I didn't take the card.

"What opportunity?""

"An agreement. Your family receives a generous settlement. The disputed properties remain with the development companies. In exchange, you sign a release acknowledging the previous transfers.""

I stared at him.

"How generous?""

He named a figure.

Two million dollars.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

"Two million?""

"Tax-efficiently structured. You would receive it over a short period.""

Daniel laughed.

"That's less than half the amount already traced to the trust.""

Richard's expression remained unchanged.

"Daniel, you're retired. Perhaps you should let professionals handle this.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"I am the trustee, Richard. And the assets you're discussing belong to Claire and Lily.""

Richard looked back at me.

"Think carefully. Two million dollars could change your life.""

I glanced at Lily.

She was holding my hand.

My daughter had spent years sharing a bedroom with me because we couldn't afford a larger apartment.

She had worn shoes with holes in the soles.

She had learned not to ask for expensive birthday presents.

And now a man who had helped steal her future was standing in front of me, offering to buy my silence.

I looked at him.

"Do you know what would change my life?""

He raised an eyebrow.

"What's that?""

"Knowing my daughter will never have to wonder whether the people who claim to love her are secretly stealing from her.""

His expression hardened.

"You're making a mistake.""

"No. I've made enough mistakes trusting people like you.""

Richard slipped the business card back into his pocket.

"Then perhaps you'll learn how expensive stubbornness can become.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

A security vehicle pulled into the driveway.

Two uniformed officers got out.

Richard looked at them and smiled faintly.

"Good. Perhaps we can all have a reasonable conversation.""

One officer approached.

"Mr. Ellison?""

"Yes.""

"We received a report regarding a disturbance and possible witness intimidation.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

"That's absurd.""

The officer turned toward Emily.

"Ma'am, are you injured?""

Emily nodded.

"He followed me.""

Richard laughed.

"She is making allegations without evidence.""

Emily held up the pendant.

"I have evidence.""

Richard's eyes immediately moved toward it.

For the first time, his composure cracked.

"That belongs to my company.""

Emily shook her head.

"It belonged to Robert Bennett.""

Graham stepped forward.

"Why does my father think he owns it?""

Nobody answered.

Then Richard looked directly at his son.

"Because I paid for it.""

Graham stared.

"What?""

Richard sighed.

"Your future was supposed to be secure. This arrangement was designed to protect our family.""

"By stealing from Claire?""

"By acquiring valuable property.""

"Without consent?""

Richard's voice hardened.

"Business doesn't work the way you think it does.""

Graham looked devastated.

"You're the reason I became a lawyer. You told me contracts were meaningless if they weren't honest.""

Richard's expression softened.

"Son, don't let these people manipulate you.""

Graham shook his head.

"You manipulated me.""

The older man turned away.

"Enough.""

He reached toward Emily.

The officer immediately stepped between them.

"Sir, don't approach her.""

Richard lifted both hands.

"Fine.""

But he wasn't looking at the officer.

He was looking at the pendant.

Then he looked at Lily.

And I understood something.

He wasn't worried about the money anymore.

He was worried about what was on that memory card.

Daniel turned toward Emily.

"Can we access it?""

She nodded.

"If we can get to a computer.""

The officers escorted Richard toward the security office while Daniel arranged for an ambulance to examine Emily.

Graham remained beside us.

"I need to apologize," he said quietly.

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For inviting your family into my life without asking enough questions.""

I shook my head.

"You didn't know.""

"I should have.""

He looked at Lily.

"I'm sorry your aunt treated you that way.""

Lily nodded politely.

Then she asked a question I wasn't prepared for.

"Are you still going to marry her?""

Graham looked toward the ballroom.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Why?""

He crouched to her level.

"Because marriage needs trust. And I don't think your aunt understands what that means.""

Lily considered this.

Then she said, "My mommy says people who love you don't make you feel small.""

Graham looked at me.

For a moment, none of us spoke.

Then he nodded.

"Your mommy is right.""

Inside the estate, the wedding guests were beginning to leave.

Some avoided looking at us.

Others offered awkward expressions of sympathy.

Vanessa stood near the entrance, still wearing her wedding dress.

Her makeup had begun to run.

When she saw Graham returning, she hurried toward him.

"Baby, thank God.""

He stopped.

"Don't.""

"Please. We need to talk.""

"We've talked enough.""

She grabbed his sleeve.

"You're throwing away everything because of a misunderstanding.""

Graham gently removed her hand.

"Five million dollars isn't a misunderstanding.""

Vanessa looked toward me.

"Claire, tell him. Tell him you don't want to destroy my life.""

I stared at her.

"I didn't destroy anything.""

"You've always hated me.""

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Vanessa, you called my daughter useless tonight.""

She rolled her eyes.

"That was a joke.""

"No. It was how you really felt.""

She stepped closer.

"You think you're better than me now?""

I shook my head.

"I think I'm done letting you hurt us.""

She turned toward Graham again.

"Please. I love you.""

He removed the wedding ring he had been carrying and placed it on the nearby table.

"Then you should have told me the truth.""

He walked away.

Vanessa stood beneath the golden lights, surrounded by flowers she had spent a fortune arranging.

Her wedding was over.

But the night wasn't.

Daniel appeared beside me holding a laptop.

"We have access to the memory card.""

Emily was seated nearby with a blanket around her shoulders.

She nodded.

"There's one file Robert wanted Claire to see personally.""

I sat beside her.

Daniel inserted the card.

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were three video files.

One was labeled RICHARD ELLISON.

Another was labeled PATRICIA WHITMORE.

The third had my name.

CLAIRE — PRIVATE.

I stared at it.

"What's that one?""

Emily looked at me.

"Your father recorded it the day before he died.""

I felt tears gathering.

"Why didn't he just tell me?""

"Because he was afraid someone was listening.""

Daniel clicked the first file.

My father's face appeared.

He was sitting in his old office, wearing the brown sweater I remembered from childhood.

He looked tired.

But his eyes were clear.

"If Claire is watching this," he began, "then the people I feared have finally made their move.""

I covered my mouth.

Then Dad leaned toward the camera.

"Claire, there's something about the night Lily was born that I never told you.""

I felt my heart pound.

He continued.

"Your mother didn't just bring paperwork to the hospital.""

He paused.

"She brought someone with her.""

Emily gripped my hand.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"And that person was Lily's biological father.""

I stopped breathing.

The room disappeared.

My ex-husband, Michael, had abandoned us when Lily was barely a year old.

He had never returned.

He had never paid child support consistently.

He had never even called on her birthday.

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at the screen.

Then my father's voice continued.

"Claire, I discovered something about Michael's connection to the Ellison family.""

The video suddenly cut to black.

Daniel frowned.

"What happened?""

Emily leaned closer.

"The recording is incomplete.""

Then another notification appeared on the laptop.

A new email had arrived.

The sender's name made me feel physically sick.

*MICHAEL BENNETT.*

My ex-husband.

The subject line contained six words.

*I KNOW WHAT YOUR FATHER DISCOVERED.*
