Chapter 10: The Child Nobody Was Supposed to Find
I stared at the photograph on my phone.
A little boy stood outside Rosewood Estate, wearing a blue sweater and holding a stuffed rabbit.
He looked about six years old.
His dark hair fell across his forehead, and his eyes were fixed on whoever had taken the picture.
Beneath the photograph were four words.
*Your sister's son is here.*
I called Daniel again.
"Who is that child?""
"I don't know yet," he answered.
"But Vanessa has admitted that she has a son.""
"Where is Lily?""
"With Emily. She's safe.""
"Don't let anyone take her.""
"Claire, listen to me. The police are here. We're securing the property.""
I looked at Michael.
He had gone pale.
"You recognize him?""
Michael nodded slowly.
"That's Noah.""
"Who is Noah?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Vanessa's son.""
I stared at him.
"You knew?""
"I knew she had a baby. I didn't know where he was.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't know whether he was alive.""
My stomach twisted.
"What do you mean?""
Michael looked at Graham.
Then back at me.
"Vanessa gave birth seven months before Lily. She told everyone the baby had died during delivery.""
I felt sick.
"She told us he was adopted.""
"She told different people different stories.""
Graham stood.
"Where is the child now?""
Michael shook his head.
"I don't know.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The little boy was standing outside the estate.
He was real.
He was alive.
And my sister had apparently spent six years hiding his existence.
I grabbed my coat.
"We're going back.""
Graham drove while Michael sat in the back seat.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Michael broke the silence.
"There's something else you need to know about Vanessa.""
I turned toward him.
"I'm listening.""
"She didn't give up Noah because she couldn't afford to raise him.""
"Then why?""
"She was involved with someone Richard Ellison didn't approve of. When she became pregnant, Richard offered to arrange everything.""
Graham's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
"Who was the father?""
Michael hesitated.
"Richard.""
The car went silent.
Graham nearly missed the turn.
"What?""
Michael looked down.
"Vanessa told me Richard was the father. She said the relationship had started before he married his current wife.""
Graham pulled the car over.
For several seconds, he just stared through the windshield.
"My father?""
Michael nodded.
Graham laughed once.
A hollow, broken sound.
"You're telling me my father had a child with my fiancée?""
"I'm telling you what Vanessa told me.""
Graham got out of the car.
He walked several steps away, then put both hands on his head.
I stayed inside.
I couldn't imagine what was going through his mind.
His father had apparently been involved in a financial conspiracy, had helped target a newborn child, and had fathered a secret child with the woman Graham was supposed to marry.
Then Graham turned around.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""
Michael answered quietly.
"Because I was ashamed of what I'd done.""
Graham stared at him.
"You accepted money to help them destroy Claire's life.""
"Yes.""
"And now you want forgiveness?""
"No.""
Michael looked at me.
"I want the truth to come out.""
I didn't answer.
He had a long way to go before I would trust anything he said.
When we arrived at Rosewood Estate, two police vehicles were parked outside.
Daniel was waiting near the entrance.
"Claire.""
"Where's Lily?""
"Inside.""
I hurried past him.
Lily was sitting on a sofa beside Emily, coloring in a small notebook.
The moment she saw me, she jumped up.
"Mommy!""
I hugged her.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded.
"Uncle Daniel said I could have hot chocolate.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Good.""
Then I noticed the little boy.
He was sitting near the fireplace with his stuffed rabbit.
He looked up when I entered.
His eyes were the same color as Vanessa's.
A police officer stood nearby.
Daniel approached me.
"This is Noah Whitmore.""
I looked at the child.
"Does he know what's happening?""
"Not really. He was brought here by a woman who identified herself as his temporary caregiver.""
"Where is Vanessa?""
"Being questioned.""
I turned toward the boy.
"Hi, Noah.""
He didn't respond.
Instead, he looked at the officer.
"Is my mommy coming?""
My heart tightened.
I crouched beside him.
"Do you know where your mommy is?""
He nodded.
"She said she was going to get married.""
I swallowed.
"Did she tell you when she'd be back?""
He shook his head.
"She said I had to wait with the nice lady.""
I looked toward Daniel.
"Who brought him?""
"His caregiver. Her name is Susan. She's being interviewed separately.""
Graham entered behind us.
When Noah saw him, he immediately looked frightened.
"Are you angry?""
Graham stopped.
"No, buddy.""
"Mommy said you're supposed to be my new daddy.""
Graham closed his eyes.
I felt an ache in my chest.
Noah was just a child.
Whatever Vanessa and Richard had done, none of it was his fault.
Lily approached him cautiously.
"Do you like coloring?""
Noah looked at her notebook.
"Sometimes.""
"Do you want a yellow crayon?""
He nodded.
Lily handed him one.
The two children sat together on the carpet.
I watched them and felt something unexpected.
For the first time that evening, I wasn't thinking about the money.
I was thinking about how many adults had made decisions that would shape these children's lives without ever asking what they needed.
Daniel pulled me aside.
"There's more.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
"The police found a second envelope in Vanessa's dressing room.""
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was Richard's.
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of an old document.
It concerned Noah's birth registration.
The father's name had been left blank.
But attached to the document was a signed acknowledgment of paternity.
Richard Ellison.
I felt my legs weaken.
"Does Graham know?""
Daniel nodded.
"He saw it.""
I looked toward Graham.
He was standing by the window, staring at the ocean.
Then Daniel lowered his voice.
"Claire, there's another issue. Richard's attorneys have contacted the police. They're claiming the child was never legally abandoned and that his current guardianship arrangement is private.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means someone has been paying to keep Noah away from Vanessa.""
I looked at the little boy.
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your mother.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Patricia had helped arrange the hospital documents, the trust transfers, and the custody contingency.
Now she had apparently been paying to keep Vanessa's child hidden.
I turned toward the entrance.
"Where is my mother?""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"That's the problem.""
He showed me a security photograph.
It showed Patricia leaving the estate through a side entrance approximately twenty minutes earlier.
She was carrying a small leather handbag.
And beside her was a man I had never seen before.
A man holding a folder marked:
*ORIGINAL TRUST BENEFICIARIES.*
Daniel pointed at the photograph.
"Claire, your mother wasn't running away alone.""
I looked closer.
The man was wearing a wedding ring.
And on his right hand was a distinctive gold signet ring.
The same ring my father had worn for thirty years.
My stomach dropped.
"Who is that?""
Daniel's answer was barely audible.
"Your father's former business partner.""
May you like
Then he added:
"The man who officially declared Robert's final will invalid.""
