Chapter 14: My Father's Last Recording
Victor took one step toward me.
"Put the camera down.""
I held it against my chest.
"No.""
His expression hardened.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""
Daniel moved slightly to his left.
Victor immediately pointed the gun at him.
"Don't.""
My mother began sobbing.
"Victor, please. This has gone too far.""
He turned toward her.
"You were the one who wanted this.""
Patricia shook her head.
"I wanted Claire to sign the documents. I never wanted anyone hurt.""
Victor laughed.
"You wanted the money. You wanted the estate. You wanted your daughters to worship you.""
He looked at me.
"And you, Claire, were always the obstacle.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because Robert trusted you.""
"That's all?""
"Your father gave you everything. The house. The trust.
The properties. Even the respect I spent twenty years trying to earn.""
His voice became louder.
"I built that company with him!""
Daniel shook his head.
"You helped him. You didn't own him.""
Victor swung the gun toward Daniel.
"Shut up!""
I slowly moved toward the old workbench.
The camera was connected to a small portable monitor.
My father had labeled the recording:
*FINAL STATEMENT — DO NOT ALTER.*
I pressed play.
His face appeared.
The same brown sweater.
The same tired eyes.
But this time, he was standing in the greenhouse.
"Claire," he began, "if Victor is there, then I was right about everything.""
Victor's face went pale.
The recording continued.
"Victor, I know what you did with the company accounts. I know about the shell corporations. I know about the payments to Patricia.""
Victor stepped toward the camera.
"Turn it off.""
I didn't move.
My father's voice grew firmer.
"And I know you have been telling Vanessa that I stole her future.""
Victor's jaw tightened.
The recording showed my father opening a folder.
"Vanessa, if you ever see this, I want you to know that I never considered you anything less than my daughter.""
My throat tightened.
My father continued.
"I knew about your biological father. I knew before you were old enough to understand. And I made a choice to raise you as my own.""
I looked at Victor.
His expression had changed.
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
The recording continued.
"But I also discovered that Victor has been using you to gain access to the Bennett properties. He convinced you that Claire was your enemy because he knew you would never willingly help him steal from your own family.""
Victor lunged toward the monitor.
Daniel blocked him.
The two men struggled.
The gun fell.
It hit the concrete floor and slid beneath the cabinet.
My mother screamed.
I grabbed the camera and moved away.
Victor struck Daniel across the face.
Daniel stumbled.
But before Victor could reach the gun, my mother threw herself against him.
They fell against the workbench.
"RUN!"" Patricia screamed.
I grabbed the documents.
Daniel pulled Victor away.
Then the sound of sirens filled the greenhouse.
Police officers rushed down the stairs.
"Hands where we can see them!""
Victor froze.
One officer forced him to the floor.
Another retrieved the weapon.
Daniel sat against the wall, breathing heavily.
I ran to my mother.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Claire...""
I held her shoulders.
"Are you okay?""
She began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because I believed him.""
I looked toward Victor.
He was being handcuffed.
My mother continued.
"He told me your father was planning to give everything to you. He said Vanessa would be left with nothing. He convinced me that I had to protect her.""
I swallowed.
"By stealing from Lily?""
She lowered her eyes.
"I thought I could fix it later.""
"Later?""
My voice broke.
"You let my daughter believe she was worthless.""
Patricia began sobbing.
"I know.""
"You watched Vanessa humiliate me.""
"I know.""
"You knew they were planning to use my medical records against me.""
She nodded.
I stepped away.
"I don't know how to forgive you.""
She didn't ask me to.
Instead, she looked toward the camera.
"Your father really did know everything, didn't he?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She covered her face.
Then the recording continued playing.
My father's voice filled the room again.
"There's one final thing I need to explain.""
I turned toward the monitor.
The screen showed him holding two photographs.
One was of Vanessa as a baby.
The other was of me.
He placed them side by side.
"Patricia, if you're watching this, I want you to understand something. I knew the truth about Vanessa's biological father, but I never wanted that truth to become a weapon against her.""
He paused.
"She was my daughter. So was Claire.""
My eyes filled.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
"Claire, the inheritance is yours to manage. But I want you to know that Vanessa is entitled to the same love and dignity you are.""
I looked at the documents.
The final will confirmed it.
Vanessa was still named as a beneficiary.
Not the trustee.
Not the owner of the entire estate.
But a protected beneficiary.
My father had never intended to punish her for being born.
He had simply wanted to prevent Victor from controlling her through money.
Then my father's voice softened.
"And Lily...""
He smiled.
"Your little girl is the reason I created the independent education and security fund. I wanted her to have choices that no one could take away.""
I began crying.
"She deserves a childhood without fear. Give her that, Claire. That's all I ever wanted.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel slowly stood.
"Claire, we need to secure those documents.""
I nodded.
The police collected the evidence.
Victor was taken into custody.
Patricia was transported to the hospital for treatment and then taken for questioning.
Before leaving, she asked to speak to me.
I agreed.
She sat in the back of the police vehicle with a blanket around her shoulders.
"Claire.""
I stood beside the open door.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""
I said nothing.
"But I need you to know that Vanessa isn't the only person Victor manipulated.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Richard Ellison wasn't the only person paying him. Someone else helped finance the operation.""
"Who?""
My mother looked toward the greenhouse.
"Michael.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Michael already admitted he took money.""
"Not just the fifty thousand. He received payments for years.""
I shook my head.
"Why?""
"Because Victor promised him a share of the Harbor Point development.""
I stared at her.
"Are you saying Michael was working with Victor the entire time?""
She nodded.
Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.
"Claire, Michael didn't disappear because he wanted to abandon Lily.""
I looked at her.
"Then why?""
"Because Victor threatened him.""
"With what?""
My mother lowered her eyes.
"With a secret about Lily's birth.""
I felt cold.
"What secret?""
She looked directly at me.
"Michael isn't the man who signed the original hospital paperwork.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
Patricia began crying again.
"Your father knew. That's why he had the hospital records sealed.""
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
It was Graham.
"Claire, you need to come back to the estate.""
"What's happened?""
"Vanessa is here.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why?""
"She wants to see you.""
"Tell her I'm not interested.""
Graham hesitated.
"Claire, she's brought someone.""
"Who?""
His answer made my knees weak.
"Michael.""
I stared at the phone.
May you like
Then he added:
"And he's carrying Lily's original birth records.""
