Chapter 5: The Groom Had Been Lied To, Too
Graham stared at the document as though the words might rearrange themselves if he looked long enough.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Richard Ellison signed as a guarantor on a loan secured against assets that did not belong to Vanessa.""
Graham slowly lowered the paper.
"That doesn't make sense. My father told me he had never done business with the Whitmores.""
Vanessa grabbed the document.
"Give me that.""
Graham pulled it away.
"Don't.""
She looked at him.
"You're seriously going to believe these people over me?""
"These people have documents.""
"Documents can be forged!""
Mr. Mason cleared his throat.
"That particular document was verified by the financial institution involved. It also contains your signature, Miss Whitmore.""
Vanessa went silent.
Graham looked at her.
"Why did you borrow money against Claire's trust?""
"It was temporary.""
"How much?""
She swallowed.
"That isn't important.""
"How much, Vanessa?""
Daniel answered.
"Three million, four hundred thousand dollars.""
A guest near the head table audibly gasped.
Graham took a step backward.
"Three million?""
Vanessa raised her hands.
"Listen to me. It was an investment. The money was supposed to generate returns. Nobody was going to lose anything.""
I stared at her.
"You borrowed three million dollars from my daughter's inheritance?""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"Don't make this about Lily.""
"She was the beneficiary!""
"She was a baby!""
The words landed like a slap.
I stepped toward my sister.
"She was my baby. She was eight months old when you took that money.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"And what would you have done with it? Bought another cheap apartment? Paid your bills? You never understood how to manage money.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Enough.""
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
She pointed directly at me.
"Do you know what I had to deal with? Dad always treated you like you were special. Everything was about Claire.
Claire's education. Claire's wedding. Claire's future.""
I stared at her.
"Dad loved both of us.""
"He gave you everything!""
"No. He gave me a childhood.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"He left you millions.""
"And you stole them.""
Her mouth opened.
For a moment, she had no answer.
Then she turned toward Graham.
"Tell them this is ridiculous. Tell them you're not going to let strangers destroy our wedding.""
Graham didn't respond.
Instead, he examined the loan agreement.
"Why is my father listed as guarantor?""
Vanessa's expression softened instantly.
"Because he wanted to help us build a future.""
"Did he know the collateral belonged to Claire?""
She hesitated.
"Of course not.""
Graham looked at Daniel.
"Can you prove that?""
Daniel opened a smaller folder.
"I believe this recording will help.""
He handed a USB drive to the DJ.
Vanessa lunged forward.
"NO!""
The DJ pulled his hand away.
Graham's voice cut through the ballroom.
"Let him play it.""
The screen changed.
A recording showed a conference room with three people seated around a table.
Vanessa.
Richard Ellison.
And my mother.
The timestamp showed it had been recorded nearly six months earlier.
Richard was the first to speak.
"Once Graham and Vanessa are married, we'll consolidate everything under the Ellison family structure.""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's the plan.""
My mother leaned forward.
"And Claire?""
Richard shrugged.
"She won't have any control once the transfer is finalized.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Claire won't even know what happened.""
The recording continued.
Richard opened a folder.
"What about the child?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Which child?""
"Lily. The trust documents identify her as a protected beneficiary.""
My mother's voice answered.
"That's already being handled.""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
"I don't want a legal problem later.""
Vanessa leaned back.
"By then, the assets will have been moved twice. Nobody will be able to trace anything.""
The ballroom fell completely silent.
Graham looked as though someone had struck him.
He watched his father's face on the screen.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
"You knew?""
She immediately began shaking her head.
"It's not what it looks like.""
He laughed once, without humor.
"You just said Claire wouldn't know.""
"That was taken out of context!""
"Context?""
He pointed at the screen.
"You discussed hiding assets from an eight-year-old.""
Vanessa began crying.
"Baby, please. We can talk about this privately.""
Graham stepped away from her.
"Don't call me that.""
I noticed something then.
My mother wasn't looking at Graham.
She was looking at the screen, specifically at the timestamp.
Her expression had changed from anger to calculation.
"Where did you get that recording?"" she demanded.
Daniel answered.
"Your former financial adviser provided it.""
My mother stiffened.
"Who?""
"Someone who has been cooperating with the independent investigation.""
Vanessa suddenly looked toward the ballroom doors.
"Is he here?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Graham removed his wedding ring from his pocket.
He had been holding it throughout the confrontation.
Now he placed it on the table.
Vanessa stared at it.
"What are you doing?""
"I'm not marrying you.""
Her face collapsed.
"Graham, don't.""
"I asked you one question before we started planning this wedding. I asked whether there was anything in your past that could affect our future.""
"I love you.""
"You told me the truth was the most important thing in a marriage.""
"It is!""
"Then why have you spent months hiding this?""
She reached for his hand.
He moved away.
"I trusted you.""
Vanessa's tears turned to anger.
"And what about your family? Your father knew everything!""
Graham froze.
"What?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Don't look so shocked. Richard was involved from the beginning.""
"Stop lying.""
"Ask him!""
Graham immediately took out his phone and called his father.
The ballroom was so quiet that we could hear the ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a man's voice answered.
"Graham? What's going on?""
Graham put the call on speaker.
"Dad, did you know about the Bennett trust?""
Silence.
"Where did you hear that?""
Graham closed his eyes.
"That's not an answer.""
His father's voice became irritated.
"Listen to me. Whatever Daniel is telling you, don't discuss it in public.""
Graham's face went pale.
"Did you sign a loan agreement with Vanessa?""
Another pause.
Then Richard answered.
"Yes.""
Graham looked at his bride.
"Did you know she was using someone else's money?""
Richard sighed.
"Son, you don't understand the arrangement.""
"Then explain it.""
"Not over the phone.""
Graham's hand tightened around the device.
"Did you help them steal from Claire?""
Richard's voice dropped.
"Be careful what you say.""
Graham stared at the phone.
Then his father said something that made every person in the ballroom turn toward me.
"Claire Bennett should be grateful we didn't take the child as well.""
I felt the air disappear from my lungs.
Graham looked horrified.
"What did you just say?""
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
I grabbed Lily and pulled her against me.
Daniel's expression had turned deadly serious.
"Claire," he said quietly.
"There's something I need to tell you about the night your daughter was born.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He glanced toward Mr. Mason.
Then back at me.
"Your father didn't just leave Lily a financial inheritance.""
May you like
He paused.
"He left her a legal protection that someone has been trying to destroy since the day she was born.""
