Chapter 9: The Baby They Tried to Take

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The rain poured around us.

Police lights flashed red and blue across the driveway.

My daughter stood only a few feet away, wrapped in Mason's arms, shivering beneath the storm.

And my wife had just told me something that could split my entire life in half.

"I switched the babies.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"What babies?""

She was crying so hard she could barely speak.

"Lily and another baby.""

My stomach twisted.

"Where?""

"At the hospital.""

Daniel stepped toward her.

"You need to explain exactly what you're saying.""

Vanessa looked at the police officers surrounding us.

"They won't let me.""

One of the officers approached.

"Ma'am, you're going to need to come with us.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Michael, please. Before they take me, you need to know the truth.""

"You've lied to me all night.""

"I know.""

"You lied for years.""

"I know.""

"Why should I believe you now?""

"Because this is the one thing I never wanted to do.""

Her words were almost lost beneath the rain.

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at us.

She didn't understand.

How could she?

She was five.

She only knew that her father was scared and her mother was crying.

I walked over and crouched beside her.

"Lily.""

She looked into my eyes.

"Are you still my daddy?""

The question destroyed me.

I wrapped my arms around her.

"Always.""

"But you look scared.""

"I am.""

"Because of me?""

"No.""

I held her tighter.

"Never because of you.""

She rested her head against my shoulder.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Now tell me.""

One of the officers stepped closer.

"Sir, we need to separate everyone.""

I shook my head.

"I need five minutes.""

The officer hesitated.

His radio crackled.

Another officer ran toward him.

"Detective says nobody leaves.""

The first officer nodded.

"Five minutes.""

I turned back to Vanessa.

"Start at the hospital.""

She wiped her face.

"When Lily was born, I was exhausted. Your mother had left the room for a while, and you were asleep beside me.""

I remembered it.

The hospital room.

The dim lights.

Lily's first cry.

Her tiny fingers wrapping around mine.

"I was approached by a nurse.""

"What nurse?""

"I don't know her name.""

"You don't know the name of the nurse who helped deliver our child?""

"She wasn't our nurse.""

My chest tightened.

"What did she want?""

Vanessa looked down.

"She told me there had been a problem with the records.""

"What kind of problem?""

"She said your daughter had been flagged.""

I stared.

"Flagged for what?""

"Genetic compatibility.""

I didn't understand.

"With whom?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't understand either.""

"Then why did you listen to her?""

"Because she knew things.""

"Like what?""

"Your full name. Your employer. Where you lived.

The fact that your mother was nearby. The fact that you had no other children.""

I felt sick.

Someone had information about us before Lily was even born.

The nurse told Vanessa that the hospital had received an emergency request to move one newborn temporarily because of a supposed identification error.

"She said a baby might have been exposed to a dangerous medication.""

I frowned.

"And you believed her?""

"I was exhausted. I had just given birth. I was terrified something had happened to the baby.""

"So what did you do?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I followed her.""

"Where?""

"A service corridor.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"That's how they got you.""

Vanessa nodded.

"She took me to a small room.""

"What happened?""

"There was another woman holding a baby.""

My pulse quickened.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"What did the woman look like?""

"Dark hair. Maybe thirty.""

"Then?""

"The nurse told me the babies would be moved temporarily.""

Vanessa's voice shook.

"But she handed me the other baby.""

I stared.

"What?""

"She told me to hold her.""

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"You didn't know that was another woman's child?""

"She said it was Lily.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"She told you that baby was mine?""

"Yes.""

"So what did you do?""

"I took the baby.""

"And where was Lily?""

"Another room.""

I stepped back.

"You left your newborn daughter?""

"I didn't know it was her.""

My voice became sharp.

"Then how did you eventually get the right baby?""

Vanessa started sobbing.

"I didn't.""

I couldn't move.

She looked at Lily.

"I brought home the baby they gave me.""

My whole body went cold.

"That's impossible.""

The officers were listening now.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Then who is Lily?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

My heart pounded.

Lily wasn't really my daughter?

I looked at her face.

The tiny freckle beside her left eye.

The dimple that appeared whenever she smiled.

Every bedtime story.

Every fever.

Every scraped knee.

Every time she had reached for me.

The idea that blood could somehow erase all of that felt unbearable.

Then Vanessa said,

"But the baby I brought home wasn't random.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

"They chose her for you.""

"Why?""

"Because they wanted you emotionally attached.""

"Attached to what?""

"To the test.""

"The test again?""

Vanessa nodded.

"They wanted to see what you would do when someone threatened to take your child away.""

Daniel stared at her.

"This is sick.""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"They believed people reveal their true nature when they think they're losing everything.""

I looked at Lily.

"Who was the other baby?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"The baby they took that night.""

I didn't speak.

"They said she belonged to someone connected to the program.""

"What program?""

"I never learned the name.""

"Then what happened to my daughter?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Michael...""

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"Where?""

"I don't know!""

The scream tore out of her.

"That's why I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"That if I ever told you, they'd come back for Lily.""

I shook my head.

"If Lily was the wrong baby, why did they stay away?""

"They didn't.""

The words were quiet.

I stopped.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Lily.

"They've been watching her the entire time.""

My stomach turned.

"The photographs.""

"Yes.""

"The notes.""

"Yes.""

"The food.""

She nodded.

"The isolation.""

Another nod.

"Why?""

"Because they wanted to see how much pressure she could endure.""

I felt sick.

A child.

My child.

Had been turned into a target.

But something still bothered me.

I turned toward Daniel.

"How did you know about Emma?""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Because Emma was the first child they used.""

I looked back at Vanessa.

"Used for what?""

"Testing.""

"Testing what?""

"Whether children could be conditioned into silence.""

I closed my eyes.

That explained the room.

The food.

The isolation.

The threats.

The records.

The constant fear.

They weren't simply tormenting children.

They were observing reactions.

Then I remembered something.

The monitor.

The list.

*ACTIVE.*

I turned toward the basement.

"There's a computer down there.""

One of the officers looked at me.

"What kind?""

"Multiple cameras. Files on children. Medical records.""

The officer immediately spoke into his radio.

"Send the evidence team downstairs.""

Then another officer came running from the front of the house.

"We have a problem.""

Everyone turned.

"What?""

"The suspect isn't in the yard.""

"Thomas?""

The officer nodded.

"We searched the property. He's gone.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You said he was your boss.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then who hired him?""

She shook her head.

"I never knew.""

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

"I do.""

We all looked at him.

He took out his phone.

"There was one person who kept appearing in every document.""

"Who?""

Daniel unlocked his phone.

An old photograph appeared.

It showed a meeting room.

Several people were seated around a table.

Vanessa's father.

Ray.

A younger Thomas.

And another man.

I recognized him immediately.

My stomach dropped.

"My father?""

I stared at the image.

No.

Not my father.

My father had died when I was eleven.

But the man in the photo looked almost exactly like him.

The officer took the phone.

"Who is that?""

"I don't know," Daniel said.

I stared at the photograph.

Then I noticed a detail.

A ring.

A heavy silver ring with a black stone.

I'd seen it before.

On Thomas.

My pulse jumped.

"That's not my father.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Then who?""

I zoomed in.

There was a nameplate in front of the man.

The image was blurry.

I could make out only part of the name.

*RICH...*

Vanessa suddenly whispered,

"Richard Vale.""

I looked at her.

"Who is he?""

She shook her head.

"I thought he was dead.""

Daniel went pale.

"He's not.""

The officer frowned.

"Who is Richard Vale?""

Daniel answered.

"The founder.""

"Founder of what?""

"The organization.""

My chest tightened.

"What's the organization called?""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She finally whispered,

"The Family Project.""

The words sounded absurd.

Almost harmless.

That made them more frightening.

The officer immediately started writing.

"What is the Family Project?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Families chosen for long-term observation.""

"Observation of what?""

"Trust.""

"Parenting.""

"Fear.""

"Attachment.""

"Loss.""

I stared at her.

"You volunteered me.""

"No.""

"Then how was I chosen?""

She looked at me.

"Through your job.""

My heart skipped.

"What does my job have to do with this?""

"Your company handled one of their financial accounts.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Years ago.""

I tried to remember.

There had been a private investment client.

An account I had inherited when I became senior manager.

I remembered seeing the company name.

A charitable trust.

Vale Foundation.

I felt cold.

"Richard Vale.""

Vanessa nodded.

"He was one of your company's biggest private clients.""

The pieces began falling together.

My job.

Thomas.

The fake charitable foundation.

Vanessa.

The children.

The surveillance.

All connected.

But there was still one question.

"Why Lily?""

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

"They were trying to determine whether you would choose your biological child over the child you believed was yours.""

I couldn't process it.

"And the other baby?""

"They were observing another family.""

"Which family?""

She didn't know.

Or refused to say.

Then Emma spoke.

"I know.""

Everyone turned.

She had been standing beside Daniel.

She looked at me.

"I've seen the file.""

"Where?""

"In the room.""

She pointed toward the basement.

"There was a list of families.""

I walked toward her.

"What did it say?""

"One family was marked as completed.""

"Who?""

She whispered a last name.

It was one I recognized.

My hands went cold.

It belonged to an executive at my company.

Someone who had once worked directly under me.

Someone who had quit suddenly five years ago.

I remembered his wife.

She had given birth the same week Lily was born.

And they'd announced the baby died.

I felt dizzy.

"They did this to other families.""

Emma nodded.

"Many.""

I looked at the police officers.

"This is bigger than my house.""

The detective's expression was grim.

"We're beginning to understand that.""

Then my phone vibrated.

Everyone stared at it.

Unknown number.

One text.

*YOU'RE ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.*

A second message appeared.

*BUT YOU STILL HAVE THE WRONG CHILD.*

My blood froze.

I looked at Lily.

She stared back.

A third message arrived.

*THE GIRL YOU BROUGHT HOME IS NOT THE ONE WE TOOK.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another text appeared.

*YOUR REAL DAUGHTER HAS BEEN WITH YOU ALL ALONG.*

My hands began shaking.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at Lily.

Then at the message.

"I don't understand," I whispered.

Another message arrived.

*ASK YOUR WIFE ABOUT THE SECOND HOSPITAL ROOM.*

Vanessa's face went completely white.

"What second room?""

I turned toward her.

She couldn't look at me.

I stepped closer.

"What second hospital room?""

She whispered,

"There was another room.""

"Where?""

"At the end of the corridor.""

"What happened there?""

Her voice broke.

"I heard a baby crying.""

"And?""

"I went inside.""

"What did you see?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"You.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"You were standing there.""

My blood ran cold.

"I was sleeping in our room.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"The man in that room looked exactly like you.""

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?""

"I thought you had come to take the baby.""

"But I hadn't.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"That's when I knew something was wrong.""

"What did the man do?""

She whispered,

"He took the baby.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

"Then who was he?""

Vanessa started shaking.

"I don't know.""

A detective approached.

"Sir.""

I turned.

"We found something in the basement.""

He held up a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph.

I took one look and felt my world stop.

The photograph showed me.

Standing outside the hospital.

Five years ago.

Holding a newborn baby.

But I had never seen that photograph before.

And the timestamp on it read:

*3:17 A.M.*

The exact minute Lily was born.

I stared at the image.

Then at the detective.

"That's me.""

He nodded.

"We know.""

I looked closer.

The baby in my arms had a tiny birthmark above her right eyebrow.

I looked at Lily.

She had no birthmark there.

The detective said quietly,

"Your daughter may not be the only thing that was switched that night.""

Then Vanessa whispered behind me,

"Michael...""

I turned.

Her eyes were full of terror.

"I remember that baby.""

"Which baby?""

"The one in the photograph.""

She swallowed.

"She wasn't Lily.""

I looked down at the photograph again.

And suddenly the most horrifying possibility of all came into focus.

Someone had been pretending to be me that night.

Someone had taken a newborn baby.

Someone had returned to our home with a different child.

May you like

And somehow, for five years, we'd never known.

Until tonight.
