Chapter 7: The Person Controlling Everything

The screaming came from the end of the basement.
It was high-pitched.
Terrified.
And unmistakably a child's voice.
Lily buried her face against my chest.
Mason grabbed Daniel's sleeve.
Emma went rigid.
"That's not possible," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"What?""
Her eyes were fixed on the darkness beyond the corridor.
"That sound.""
The scream came again.
This time it was followed by three rapid knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Emma's face lost what little color remained.
"That was the signal.""
"What signal?""
"The children used it when someone was coming.""
I looked toward the corridor.
"Someone is still down here.""
Daniel immediately moved in front of Emma.
"Stay behind me.""
I pulled Lily closer.
"Nobody separates.""
Vanessa was standing several feet away, staring at her phone.
Her whole body was shaking.
"Who called you?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at me.
"I don't know.""
"You answered the phone.""
"I know.""
"Then you heard the voice.""
She nodded.
"Did you recognize it?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered,
"Yes.""
"Who?""
She looked at Daniel.
"I'm afraid to say.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You've been afraid for years.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"It's my father.""
I stared at her.
"Your father is dead.""
"I know.""
Silence swallowed the basement.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then whose voice was that?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I looked at the phone.
The caller ID still displayed *HOME*.
That word bothered me.
Not a number.
Not a name.
Home.
As if someone wanted us to understand that no matter where we went, they were already there.
The screaming started again.
This time it sounded closer.
I turned toward the far end of the basement.
"There's another room.""
Emma nodded.
"Behind the wall.""
I looked at her.
"How do we open it?""
"There's a red brick near the floor.""
I found it.
Pressed it.
Nothing.
I tried pushing harder.
A click sounded inside the wall.
Then a section of concrete shifted inward.
A hidden door opened.
Cold air rushed toward us.
Daniel stared.
"I didn't know this existed.""
"Neither did I.""
Vanessa whispered, "I did.""
Everyone turned toward her.
"You knew?""
She began to cry.
"I was never supposed to open it.""
"Why?""
"My father built it.""
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"He said every family had secrets that needed somewhere to live.""
The sentence made my stomach twist.
I stepped through the opening.
The room beyond was different from the others.
Cleaner.
Newer.
There was a desk.
Two monitors.
A camera system.
Shelves filled with files.
A refrigerator.
Medical supplies.
A small cot.
And on the largest monitor was a live video feed.
My daughter's bedroom.
I froze.
Lily was visible on the screen.
Her bed.
Her stuffed rabbit.
Her night-light.
Everything exactly as it had been that morning.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
"This camera is live.""
Daniel moved beside me.
"When was that footage recorded?""
I looked at the timestamp.
*7:49 P.M.*
It was current.
Someone was watching us.
Right now.
I scanned the other monitors.
Mason's room.
Emma's room.
The kitchen.
The driveway.
The front porch.
Then another feed.
My office.
Another.
My car.
Another.
Lily at school.
I stared.
Someone had been tracking my life.
Not just inside the house.
Everywhere.
Daniel pointed toward the desk.
"Look.""
A tablet sat there.
Its screen was open.
There was a list of names.
Michael Carter.
Lily Carter.
Mason Reed.
Emma Reed.
Daniel Reed.
Vanessa Hale.
Beside each name was a status.
*ACTIVE.*
Except Emma.
Her line said:
*PRESUMED DEAD.*
I felt something inside me crack.
"Who made this?""
Emma stepped closer.
She stared at the screen.
"I've seen that.""
"Where?""
"Before.""
She pointed at the tablet.
"There was another one.""
"When?""
"Years ago.""
"What do you remember?""
She touched her forehead.
"I was told I was being transferred.""
"Transferred where?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Who told you?""
"Ray.""
I frowned.
"Did he take you?""
She nodded.
"Then why are you still here?""
Emma looked around.
"He changed his mind.""
"Why?""
"He said people were asking questions.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"What people?""
"Police.""
He took a step forward.
"Did the police know you were alive?""
Emma shook her head.
"They were told I ran away.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I thought...""
He couldn't finish.
Emma walked toward him.
"I know.""
He looked up.
"I'm sorry.""
She gave him a weak smile.
"I know you looked.""
He covered his mouth.
I turned toward the computer.
There was a folder labeled *DISPOSITION*.
I opened it.
Inside were files on children.
Not just Emma.
There were twenty-three names.
Some had dates beside them.
Some had notes.
*PLACED WITH RELATIVE.*
*TRANSFERRED.*
*RUNAWAY.*
*DECEASED.*
*UNLOCATED.*
I stared at the list.
"What is this?""
Vanessa moved closer.
Her expression changed.
"I've never seen that.""
I looked at her.
"That's hard to believe.""
She shook her head.
"I've seen the basement. I've seen the records. But not this.""
Daniel opened another file.
"These dates...""
He looked stunned.
"They match the cases.""
"What cases?""
"Children who disappeared in this county.""
A horrible silence fell over us.
I looked at the twenty-three names.
"They're all children.""
Daniel nodded.
"Some were reported missing.""
"Some?""
"Some were labeled runaways.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"You expect me to believe all these children passed through this house?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I don't.""
Emma pointed toward a second folder.
"That's where they kept the photographs.""
I opened it.
Inside were hundreds.
Children in different places.
Different houses.
Different backgrounds.
But all the images had one thing in common.
A timestamp.
And a small symbol in the lower corner.
A black triangle.
"What does that mean?""
Emma stared at it.
"Selection.""
"Selection for what?""
"I don't know.""
Mason spoke from behind me.
"Mom knows.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"No.""
"You told me.""
"I was trying to scare you.""
"You said Ray picks children.""
Daniel's head snapped toward Vanessa.
"He what?""
She started crying.
"I didn't understand what he was doing.""
"Then explain it.""
She wiped her face.
"He said some children were difficult.""
"So?""
"He said difficult children could be taught.""
I felt sick.
"By locking them away?""
"At first, yes.""
"And then?""
She hesitated.
"What happened to them?""
"I don't know.""
Emma stepped forward.
"You do.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
Emma's eyes hardened.
"You were there.""
"I was scared.""
"You watched.""
"I was a child too.""
"You were eighteen.""
The room became silent.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
"Eighteen?""
She nodded.
"That's when it started?""
Vanessa looked down.
"My father said I had to help.""
"Why you?""
"He said I understood children.""
I felt anger rise.
"No.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"He said I was easy to manipulate.""
The words stunned all of us.
She continued.
"My father used fear. Ray used fear. And eventually, I learned how to survive by doing whatever they wanted.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You married me to hide all this.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Partly.""
"Partly?""
She looked at me.
"When I met Michael, I thought I could finally leave.""
My heart hardened.
"You never intended to tell me.""
"No.""
"Why did you marry me?""
"Because they told me to.""
The room fell silent.
Daniel stared at her.
"Who?""
Vanessa looked at the camera.
Then she whispered,
"The person who has been running this.""
A sudden notification appeared on the monitor.
*NEW MESSAGE.*
I clicked it.
The screen turned black.
Then white letters appeared.
*HELLO, MICHAEL.*
I felt my stomach drop.
Another line appeared.
*YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.*
Then:
*VANESSA IS NOT THE ONE YOU SHOULD FEAR.*
I looked at her.
She was trembling.
A third line appeared.
*ASK DANIEL WHY HE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT THE FIRE.*
Daniel went completely still.
I turned toward him.
"What fire?""
He stared at the screen.
"Not now.""
"Tell me.""
"I was going to.""
"When?""
He looked away.
"After I found Emma.""
"What fire?""
Emma stepped closer.
"I remember the fire.""
Daniel's face went pale.
"Emma...""
"You told me to stay upstairs.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know.""
"You left.""
"I thought your mother had you.""
Emma shook her head.
"You left.""
The screen changed.
A grainy image appeared.
An old photograph.
A house engulfed in flames.
I recognized it.
It was this house.
But it looked older.
Smoke billowed from the second floor.
A small figure stood outside.
A child.
Someone had circled her in red.
Then a timestamp appeared.
Fourteen years earlier.
I looked at Emma.
"You were there?""
She nodded.
"I got out.""
"Then why did everyone think you were dead?""
She looked at Vanessa.
"Because she told them I didn't.""
Vanessa was crying.
"I thought Ray would kill you.""
"But he didn't.""
"No.""
"Who saved me?""
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
"He did.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't know.""
Emma pointed toward the photograph.
"You carried me.""
Daniel covered his face.
"I don't remember.""
"You were bleeding.""
He looked up.
"I don't remember.""
"You told me to run.""
His eyes widened.
"Emma...""
I stared between them.
"Why did you never tell me?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because after the fire, I was arrested.""
"What?""
"Vanessa accused me of starting it.""
The monitor flashed again.
*THAT PART IS TRUE.*
I felt a chill.
Then another line:
*DANIEL DID SET THE FIRE.*
Daniel looked horrified.
"No.""
*AND HE DID IT TO DESTROY THE EVIDENCE.*
He stepped backward.
"That's a lie.""
I stared at him.
"Did you?""
"No.""
The computer began playing a video.
Old footage.
Black-and-white.
A younger Daniel stood in the basement.
He was carrying a box.
He looked terrified.
Behind him was Vanessa's father.
And beside him—
Ray.
I watched as they argued.
There was no audio.
Then Daniel pointed toward the stairs.
Ray shoved him.
Vanessa's father struck Daniel across the face.
The video stopped.
Another clip began.
Daniel was kneeling beside a little girl.
Emma.
He wrapped her in a blanket.
Then he carried her toward the staircase.
The footage ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"I didn't know there was a camera.""
I looked at him.
"Why were you here?""
He swallowed.
"I came to get Emma.""
"So you knew she was alive.""
"I suspected.""
"How long?""
"Years.""
My anger rose.
"Years?""
He nodded.
"I kept looking.""
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
"Because the moment I did, they'd move her.""
I looked toward Emma.
"Who is 'they'?""
Daniel pointed at the monitor.
"Whoever controls those records.""
The screen flickered.
Then a message appeared.
*DANIEL HAS TOLD YOU ENOUGH.*
The next line made my blood run cold.
*NOW ASK VANESSA WHY SHE CHOSE LILY.*
I turned toward my wife.
She looked at the screen.
Then at Lily.
She started shaking.
"No.""
"What does that mean?""
"Michael...""
"Why Lily?""
"Because...""
She couldn't finish.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Vanessa.""
She began to cry.
"I didn't choose her.""
"Then who did?""
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"I was told to watch her.""
"For what?""
"Until they decided whether she was suitable.""
My stomach turned.
"Suitable for what?""
She whispered,
"Replacement.""
The word echoed through the room.
"What replacement?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Emma's.""
Emma went completely still.
"No.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
Emma backed away.
"No.""
Mason grabbed her hand.
My daughter started crying.
"What does that mean?"" I demanded.
Vanessa couldn't look at me.
"They wanted another child.""
"Why?""
"I don't know.""
"You watched Lily because they wanted her?""
"Yes.""
"Who are 'they'?""
She closed her eyes.
Then said a name.
A name I had heard before.
A name that had been sitting silently in my life for years.
"The person behind all of this isn't Ray.""
She looked directly at me.
"It's your boss.""
Everything inside me stopped.
"My boss?""
Vanessa nodded.
"He has been watching you since before we met.""
I couldn't speak.
The monitor flickered one final time.
A photograph appeared.
It was me.
Standing outside my office.
Taken three years earlier.
Underneath it was a single sentence:
*YOU WERE NEVER CHOSEN BY ACCIDENT.*
Then the screens went black.
May you like
And from upstairs came the sound of the front door opening.
Someone had entered the house.
