Calm

Chapter 8: The Man Waiting in My Living Room

The sound of the front door closing echoed through the house.

Everyone in the basement went silent.

I stared at the staircase.

Someone had entered.

The door had opened from the outside.

Then closed.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Mason squeezed Emma's hand.

Lily buried her face against my side.

Vanessa looked like she was about to collapse.

Daniel whispered, "How did they get in?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

The basement lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then stayed on.

I reached into my pocket and tightened my grip around the small flashlight.

"Nobody moves.""

Footsteps crossed the kitchen floor above us.

One step.

Pause.

Another.

Whoever had entered wasn't in a hurry.

They wanted us to hear them.

Daniel moved closer.

"Could be Ray.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"How do you know?""

"Ray doesn't walk like that.""

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She whispered,

"He always checks the doors first.""

A cold feeling ran down my spine.

"Whoever that is already knows we're down here.""

Emma looked terrified.

"They're coming.""

The footsteps stopped.

Right above us.

Silence.

Then three knocks.

Not from the wall.

From the basement door.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lily cried out.

I lifted my hand.

"Stay behind me.""

The basement door opened slowly.

A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

Then a man stepped into the light.

I knew him.

My stomach dropped.

It was Thomas.

My boss.

The man whose photograph had appeared on the monitor.

The man Vanessa had just accused of controlling everything.

He stood there wearing the same dark suit he'd worn at the office that morning.

Calm.

Dry.

Not a single trace of rain on him despite the storm outside.

He looked down the stairs.

Then smiled.

"Michael.""

I couldn't speak.

Thomas took one step down.

"It's been a difficult evening.""

Daniel stepped in front of Emma.

"You.""

Thomas smiled.

"Daniel.""

"You stay away from her.""

Thomas tilted his head.

"You've spent fourteen years searching for her.""

"Because you took her.""

"No.""

Thomas's smile faded.

"You lost her.""

Emma stared at him.

"You're lying.""

Thomas looked directly at her.

"I didn't expect you to remember me.""

Emma's face tightened.

"I remember everything.""

He took another step.

"That's unfortunate.""

I moved forward.

"Stop.""

Thomas stopped.

"Michael, you really shouldn't be angry with me.""

"Get out of my house.""

He laughed quietly.

"I don't think you understand whose house this is.""

I glanced at Vanessa.

She had stepped backward.

"Thomas...""

He looked at her.

"You were supposed to keep him away from the basement.""

Her expression crumbled.

"I tried.""

"No.""

He sounded almost bored.

"You became emotional.""

"People were going to find out.""

"Because you failed.""

I felt my blood boil.

"You've been controlling her.""

Thomas looked at me.

"Controlling is a strong word.""

"Then choose another.""

"Managing.""

I almost laughed.

"You've been managing my wife.""

"I've been managing a situation that existed long before you entered it.""

"What situation?""

He looked toward Emma.

"That.""

Daniel's fists tightened.

Thomas continued down the stairs.

"She was never supposed to survive.""

Emma stared at him.

"Why?""

He looked at her.

"Because children talk.""

She flinched.

Mason stepped closer to me.

Thomas noticed him.

"Ah.""

He smiled.

"The boy.""

Mason froze.

"You remember him?""

"Of course.""

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

"You said he was manageable.""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"He was a child.""

"So was Emma.""

Thomas looked at Lily.

"And this one.""

My body went rigid.

He stared at my daughter for several seconds.

"She's younger than I expected.""

I stepped between them.

"Don't look at her.""

Thomas raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone.""

"You came into my house.""

"Because you found something you weren't supposed to find.""

"You mean the children you imprisoned?""

Thomas sighed.

"You have a very dramatic way of describing things.""

Daniel shouted,

"She's been kept underground for years!""

Thomas didn't even blink.

"She wasn't the only one.""

The words hung in the air.

Emma stared at him.

"Where are the others?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Some are alive.""

Hope flashed in her eyes.

"Where?""

He smiled faintly.

"Wouldn't you like to know?""

I took a step forward.

"You're going to tell us.""

Thomas looked amused.

"Are you threatening me?""

"I'm telling you.""

"Michael.""

His voice became quieter.

"You still don't understand.""

"I understand plenty.""

"No.""

He pointed toward the monitor room.

"You think you discovered a secret.""

He shook his head.

"You discovered a system.""

My stomach tightened.

"What system?""

"One that has operated for generations.""

Vanessa started crying.

Thomas glanced at her.

"Your father understood the value of discipline.""

"Discipline?"" I said.

"Fear, Michael.""

He smiled.

"Fear is more efficient.""

I felt sick.

"You targeted children.""

"Not random children.""

"Then how did you choose them?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"We choose families.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Families that are vulnerable.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You selected mine.""

"Your family was unstable.""

"You destroyed it.""

Thomas shrugged.

"I exposed its weaknesses.""

I looked toward Vanessa.

"And mine?""

Thomas smiled.

"Yours was particularly useful.""

"Why?""

"Because you were successful.""

The answer made no sense.

"Successful?""

"You had money. A respected position. A stable reputation.""

He paused.

"And you trusted people.""

I understood.

The trust.

The reason Vanessa had been chosen.

The reason I had been watched.

"You picked me.""

Thomas nodded.

"Years before you ever met Vanessa.""

"Why?""

"Because someone needed to observe how you reacted under pressure.""

I felt a chill.

"Observe me for what?""

"Selection.""

Lily whimpered.

I immediately pulled her closer.

Thomas continued.

"We needed to know whether you would protect a child who depended on you.""

Daniel shook his head.

"This is insane.""

Thomas ignored him.

"We created small problems.""

"The lies.""

"The accusations.""

"The food.""

"The isolation.""

Thomas nodded.

"All controlled.""

I stared at him.

"My daughter was part of an experiment?""

"Not an experiment.""

"Then what?""

"A test.""

"For what?""

Thomas looked at me.

"Ownership.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"Ownership?""

"You call children your family.""

Thomas's expression was almost philosophical.

"We call them assets.""

Daniel lunged.

I caught his arm before he reached Thomas.

"Don't.""

Thomas smiled.

"See?""

He looked at Daniel.

"Still impulsive.""

Then he looked at me.

"That's why you were interesting.""

I pushed Daniel back.

"Get the kids ready.""

Thomas sighed.

"You're not leaving.""

I looked toward the stairs.

"Try stopping me.""

He smiled.

"I don't need to.""

He pulled a small remote from his pocket.

Pressed a button.

A loud click came from somewhere inside the walls.

Then the basement door slammed shut.

Mason jumped.

Thomas pointed upward.

"Your car won't start.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"Your phones are being tracked.""

I checked mine.

No signal.

Thomas continued.

"And the police are currently receiving a report that you kidnapped your wife and children.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You did what?""

"I made one phone call.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Thomas smiled.

"You should believe her on this one.""

I didn't know whether I wanted to.

But I had no time.

I looked around the room.

"There's another exit.""

Thomas's eyes narrowed slightly.

I caught it.

He hadn't expected that.

Emma noticed too.

"Behind the shelves.""

I immediately moved toward them.

Thomas stepped forward.

"No.""

That was enough.

I shoved the shelf aside.

A narrow opening appeared.

A tunnel.

Thomas rushed toward me.

Daniel tackled him.

The two men crashed into the concrete floor.

Vanessa screamed.

I grabbed Lily and pulled her into the tunnel.

"Mason!""

He pushed Emma ahead.

"Go!""

Daniel struggled with Thomas.

Thomas punched him.

Daniel fell.

Vanessa grabbed a metal pipe from the floor and swung.

Thomas blocked it.

"Vanessa!""

She struck him again.

He staggered.

"Run!""

We ran.

The tunnel was narrow and dark.

Mason held Emma's hand.

I carried Lily.

Behind us came shouting.

Then footsteps.

"They're coming!"" Mason yelled.

I looked ahead.

A faint light appeared.

An exit.

I ran faster.

The tunnel opened into an abandoned utility room outside the house.

A rusted metal door stood ahead.

I shoved it.

Locked.

"Move.""

I slammed my shoulder into it.

Nothing.

Again.

Still nothing.

Mason looked around.

"There's a chain.""

I pulled it free.

The door opened.

Cold rain hit my face.

We had reached the backyard.

"Go!""

The children ran into the storm.

I followed.

Then I stopped.

My car sat in the driveway.

The hood was open.

Smoke rose from the engine.

Thomas had been telling the truth.

I pulled out my phone.

One bar.

I called emergency services.

The call connected.

"Emergency services. What's your location?""

"Someone is holding children captive at my house. We need police and medical assistance.""

The operator asked for my address.

I gave it.

"Are you in immediate danger?""

"Yes.""

I looked back at the house.

Thomas had come out the rear door.

Vanessa and Daniel were behind him.

He saw me.

He smiled.

Then he held up something in his hand.

A gun.

I pulled the children behind the car.

"Yes.""

My voice dropped.

"We have an armed man.""

The operator asked,

"How many people are with you?""

"Four children and two adults.""

Thomas began walking toward us.

Vanessa suddenly stepped in front of him.

"Thomas, stop.""

He pointed the gun at her.

"Move.""

"No.""

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Vanessa!""

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

"Michael!""

Thomas aimed at Vanessa.

I stepped out from behind the car.

"Put it down.""

He looked at me.

"You still think this ends with you saving everyone.""

He smiled.

"It doesn't.""

A police siren sounded in the distance.

Thomas's expression changed.

He looked toward the road.

Then back at me.

"This is not finished.""

He slowly lowered the gun.

Then he smiled.

"You've been asking who chose Lily.""

I stared.

"Yes.""

Thomas pointed toward Vanessa.

"Ask her what she did the night Lily was born.""

Vanessa went completely still.

Thomas turned.

And disappeared into the darkness behind the house.

The police arrived seconds later.

Officers flooded the yard.

Guns raised.

Commands shouted.

Daniel immediately raised his hands.

Vanessa dropped to her knees.

Emma stood frozen in the rain.

Mason held Lily.

And I stood there staring at my wife.

Because Thomas's final words had changed everything again.

The night Lily was born.

I remembered it perfectly.

Vanessa had been there.

I had been there.

Our daughter had been born at 3:17 a.m.

Everything had seemed normal.

At least, I thought it had.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What did you do that night?""

She started crying.

"I didn't know what they wanted.""

"What did you do?""

She shook her head.

"Michael, please.""

"Tell me.""

She looked toward Lily.

Then at the police.

And finally at me.

"I switched the babies.""

My entire body went numb.

"What?""

Vanessa whispered,

"Lily wasn't supposed to be your daughter.""

Emma gasped.

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

And I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

May you like

Because for the first time in five years, I was forced to consider a question I had never imagined asking.

Was Lily really the child I had carried home from that hospital?
