Chapter 3: The Man Vanessa Tried to Erase

For several seconds, nobody in the room spoke.

I could hear the rain striking the windows downstairs.

I could hear Lily's uneven breathing against my chest.

And through the phone, I could hear a man breathing on the other end.

Daniel.

Vanessa's former husband.

The father of the boy standing beside me.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

"Daniel," I said carefully, "what are you talking about?""

"I was hoping you would never have to find out.""

His voice was low and exhausted.

"But now that you have...""

He stopped.

"Now that I have what?""

"The room.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"How do you know about the room?""

"Because I built it.""

The words hit me harder than they should have.

"What?""

"I built that room before Vanessa and I separated. It wasn't a punishment room. It was supposed to be a playroom for Mason.""

I looked around.

The bare walls.

The scratched floor.

The tiny chair.

The timer.

The locked storage bin.

I swallowed.

"What happened?""

Daniel sighed.

"Vanessa changed after we got married.""

I glanced at her.

She looked away.

"Changed how?""

"At first, it was little things. Mason was four. He was loud.

Messy. Normal.""

Daniel's voice cracked slightly.

"She started saying he was difficult. Then she said he was manipulative. Then she started telling me he was dangerous.""

I frowned.

"Dangerous?""

"She claimed he hurt Lily.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Mason wasn't even living here when Lily was born.""

"I know.""

Daniel went quiet.

"I believed her for a while.""

That sentence carried something heavy.

Regret.

"What did she say he did?""

"She said he pushed her. Hit her. Sometimes even locked her in rooms.""

I looked at Mason.

He was staring at the floor.

My stomach tightened.

"Was any of it true?""

"No.""

Daniel answered immediately.

"Not one word.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She whispered, "Daniel is lying.""

I put the phone on speaker.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Daniel continued.

"Eventually, Vanessa convinced me Mason needed professional help. She found a counselor who agreed he had severe behavioral problems.""

"Was that counselor legitimate?""

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

"That's what I thought.""

I stared at the phone.

"What happened?""

"I later learned Vanessa had been feeding the counselor information before every appointment.""

My skin prickled.

"What kind of information?""

"Lies. Half-truths. Stories about Mason being violent. Stories about me being an irresponsible father.""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"I was trying to get him help.""

Daniel ignored her.

"Then one day, I came home from work and Mason was crying in that room.""

I glanced at my stepson.

"What happened?""

"I asked him why he was there.""

Daniel's breathing changed.

"He told me Vanessa had locked him inside because he took a cookie.""

I looked at Mason.

He nodded.

Tears silently rolled down his cheeks.

"How old were you?"" I asked.

Mason whispered, "Six.""

Six.

He'd been six years old.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel answered.

"He did.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"He told me everything.""

"Then why didn't you take him?""

"I tried.""

Daniel's voice became bitter.

"But Vanessa had already prepared for that.""

He explained that by then, Vanessa had collected months of notes documenting Mason's supposed behavior.

Tantrums.

Disobedience.

Lying.

Aggression.

Food stealing.

Nighttime disturbances.

Every ordinary thing a child might do had been transformed into evidence against him.

"When I confronted her," Daniel said, "she told me Mason needed structure. Then she threatened to accuse me of abusing him.""

I closed my eyes.

"So you left.""

"I didn't want to.""

"Why did you?""

"Because she made sure I had no choice.""

Vanessa suddenly shouted, "That's enough!""

Lily flinched.

I immediately turned toward her.

"It's okay, baby.""

She nodded, but she was trembling.

I lowered the phone.

"Daniel, I need you to tell me exactly what happened after that.""

There was a long pause.

"Vanessa filed for custody.""

I looked at Mason.

"She got it?""

"Temporary custody.""

"Why?""

"Because she had documentation.""

The word made my blood boil.

"Documentation you now know was false.""

"Yes.""

Daniel continued.

"The judge ordered evaluations. Every evaluator saw a frightened six-year-old who refused to speak in front of Vanessa.""

Mason whispered, "She said I would get in trouble.""

Daniel heard him.

"That's exactly what he used to tell me.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

But I didn't know whether those tears were remorse, fear, or both.

Daniel said, "Eventually I was allowed supervised visits.""

"Why didn't you fight harder?""

"I did.""

His voice broke.

"I spent everything I had.""

"Then what?""

"Vanessa kept filing complaints.""

He described accusation after accusation.

Missed appointments.

Claims that he frightened Mason.

Claims that Mason didn't want to see him.

Claims that Daniel was trying to manipulate the child.

Eventually, the court restrictions became too complicated and expensive.

Daniel couldn't keep up.

"He chose to stay with me.""

I looked at Mason.

The boy shook his head.

"I didn't.""

Daniel's silence confirmed it.

"I know," he finally said.

My chest tightened.

"So why are you calling me tonight?""

"Because someone sent me a picture.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What picture?""

"Of the pantry.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She looked away.

"Who sent it?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you send it to yourself?""

"No.""

"Then who?""

"A number I didn't recognize.""

Daniel paused.

"It said, 'She's doing it again.''"

A cold sensation moved down my back.

"Doing what again?""

"Exactly what she did before.""

Vanessa stepped toward the phone.

"You are lying.""

Daniel said nothing.

I asked, "Did this happen with anyone else?""

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"My niece.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"What?""

Daniel ignored her.

"Before Mason, there was another child.""

I felt Lily's arms tighten around my neck.

"Whose child?""

"Her sister's.""

Vanessa froze.

"Daniel," I said, "what happened?""

"Her sister left Vanessa alone with the girl for a weekend.""

"What happened?""

"The child stopped eating.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"How old?""

"Five.""

My stomach dropped.

"She told her mother that Vanessa didn't let her eat unless she behaved.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"That's not true.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Then why did your sister take her daughter and disappear?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"And why," Daniel continued, "did she cut all contact with you?""

Silence.

Lily whispered, "Daddy?""

I looked at her.

"I'm here.""

She glanced toward Vanessa.

"Can we go to Grandma's?""

The question broke something inside me.

She had never asked to leave home before.

She was asking now.

"Yes.""

I lifted her into my arms.

Then I looked at Mason.

"Get your shoes.""

Vanessa stepped in front of him.

"No.""

I stared at her.

"Move.""

"You can't take my son.""

"Mason is coming with us.""

"He is my child.""

"He just told me you've been locking both children in a room.""

"I disciplined him.""

"He is terrified of you.""

"He is confused.""

"He isn't confused.""

Mason stepped around her.

He grabbed my hand.

Vanessa's expression darkened.

"You think you can just walk away with my son?""

I looked at her.

"No.""

I glanced at Lily.

"I'm taking both children somewhere safe while I figure out what you've been doing.""

"You'll destroy this family.""

I almost laughed.

"You did that yourself.""

I led the children downstairs.

Vanessa followed.

She didn't touch us.

She didn't yell.

She suddenly became eerily quiet.

And that frightened me more.

We reached the front door.

Mason stopped.

"Dad.""

"What?""

He pointed toward the kitchen.

"There's something else.""

I turned.

"What?""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Under the sink.""

I remembered Lily pointing there earlier.

The second lock.

My stomach tightened.

I went into the kitchen.

Vanessa followed behind me.

"Michael, don't.""

I crouched beside the cabinet.

There was indeed a small combination lock attached to the handles.

"What is inside?""

"Cleaning supplies.""

"Then open it.""

She remained silent.

"Open it.""

"Michael—"

"Open it.""

She finally reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

My eyes fixed on it.

"Why did you tell me it was a combination lock?""

She didn't answer.

She opened the cabinet.

Cleaning products were stacked at the front.

Nothing unusual.

I moved them aside.

There was a plastic box behind them.

I pulled it out.

Inside were envelopes.

Lots of envelopes.

Each one had a date.

I picked up the newest.

September 28.

Three days earlier.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

I read it once.

Then again.

My hands started shaking.

"What is it?"" Mason asked.

I couldn't answer.

The note said:

*Michael is beginning to notice.*

I looked up.

Vanessa's face was drained of color.

I opened another envelope.

*Keep Lily away from the pantry when he is home.*

Another.

*Make Mason think his father abandoned him.*

Another.

*Do not leave receipts for extra groceries.*

Another.

My heart hammered.

These weren't random notes.

They were instructions.

A plan.

Someone had been telling Vanessa what to do.

I looked at the envelopes.

"Who wrote these?""

Vanessa stared at the floor.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

Daniel suddenly spoke through the phone.

"Michael.""

"What?""

"Look at the handwriting.""

I studied the notes.

The writing was neat.

Slanted slightly to the right.

I recognized it.

But I couldn't place it.

"Why?""

"Because I know that handwriting.""

I stared at the speaker.

"Whose is it?""

Daniel was silent for so long I thought the call had dropped.

Then he said,

"Mine.""

My head snapped up.

"What?""

"I wrote those notes.""

Vanessa's head jerked toward the phone.

"No!""

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"I wrote them years ago.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked genuinely stunned.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel continued.

"I had a notebook during the custody battle. I wrote down everything I suspected about Vanessa.""

I looked at the notes again.

"So these are your notes?""

"Yes.""

"Then why are they here?""

"I don't know.""

I flipped through them faster.

Some were dated years ago.

Others were recent.

But they all used the same handwriting.

My stomach turned.

"Daniel...""

"What?""

"Some of these are dated this year.""

There was silence.

"What?""

I held one up.

September.

Another.

August.

Another.

July.

Daniel's breathing grew heavier.

"That isn't possible.""

"Why?""

"Because I haven't been inside that house in four years.""

Vanessa whispered, "Someone is setting me up.""

I looked at her.

For the first time, I wasn't certain what I was looking at.

A guilty woman?

A terrified woman?

Or someone being manipulated too?

Then Mason suddenly grabbed my sleeve.

"Dad.""

"What?""

He pointed toward the box.

"That's not all.""

He reached beneath the envelopes.

His fingers pulled out a photograph.

I took it.

It was old.

Very old.

The picture showed Vanessa standing beside another woman.

A little girl stood between them.

Five years old.

And behind them was this same house.

But there was something written on the back.

I turned it over.

Four words.

*She wasn't the first one.*

My pulse slammed against my throat.

"Daniel...""

"I don't like the sound of that.""

"Who is the little girl?""

Vanessa began crying.

Real, uncontrollable crying.

I turned toward her.

"Who is she?""

She covered her mouth.

"I never wanted this to happen.""

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?""

She looked at me.

And for the first time, she stopped trying to defend herself.

"I didn't start it.""

The room went silent.

"Then who did?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.

All three of us looked toward the ceiling.

Mason grabbed my arm.

"There.""

Another crash.

Then a thud.

Something—or someone—was moving around in the locked room.

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

"Stay behind me.""

I started toward the staircase.

Vanessa didn't move.

"Mason," I said.

The boy stared at his mother.

Then whispered,

"Dad... there's no one supposed to be up there.""

I reached the bottom step.

Another sound came from above.

A slow scrape.

Then three deliberate knocks against the bedroom door.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the ceiling.

And then she whispered the words that made every hair on my arms stand up.

"Michael...""

Her voice shook.

"That room has been empty for two years.""

I looked at the stairs.

Then at my daughter.

Then at Mason.

And finally back at Vanessa.

"Then who is upstairs?""

May you like

No one answered.

And before I could take another step, the lights in the entire house went out.
