Chapter 6: The Child Behind the Wall

The voice came again.
"Michael?""
This time there was no mistaking it.
It sounded like Lily.
Exactly like Lily.
The same tiny voice.
The same frightened tremble.
But Lily was standing behind me with both hands gripping my shirt.
"Daddy," she whispered, "I'm here.""
I looked at Ray.
He had stopped smiling.
Vanessa was staring at the wall.
Mason was crying silently.
"Who is behind that wall?"" I demanded.
Nobody answered.
I stepped toward it.
Ray moved down another stair.
"Don't.""
His voice was calm now.
Too calm.
I turned toward him.
"You don't give me orders.""
"I am trying to keep you from making a mistake.""
"I've made enough mistakes tonight.""
I put my palm against the wall.
A faint vibration traveled through it.
Then—
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Three small knocks.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
"Emma?""
Silence.
I pressed my ear to the wall.
At first, nothing.
Then a whisper.
"Please.""
It was a child's voice.
Different from Lily.
Different from Mason.
A little older.
My stomach dropped.
"Emma?""
The response came immediately.
"Yes.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"No...""
I looked at her.
"You said she disappeared.""
"I thought she did.""
"She's here?""
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
Ray suddenly rushed forward.
I stepped between him and the wall.
"Don't come any closer.""
He stopped.
His eyes were hard.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with.""
"Then explain it.""
He said nothing.
I turned to Vanessa.
"How long have you known someone was behind that wall?""
Her lips trembled.
"I heard her.""
"How long?""
"Since tonight.""
I stared at her.
"You're lying.""
She looked at me.
"I swear.""
Mason shook his head.
"Mom heard it before.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Mason...""
"I heard you talking to her.""
I looked at him.
"When?""
"Last month.""
"Who?""
"Emma.""
My skin prickled.
I faced the wall again.
"Emma, my name is Michael.""
There was a pause.
"I know.""
My stomach dropped.
"How do you know my name?""
"Vanessa talks about you.""
I looked at my wife.
"What does she tell you?""
The child didn't answer.
Then she whispered,
"That you don't believe children.""
I glanced at Vanessa.
Her face crumpled.
"That's not true.""
The voice continued.
"She said you'd never come.""
My throat tightened.
"Well, I'm here now.""
Silence.
Then the child said,
"Can you get me out?""
I stepped back and looked at the wall.
"Yes.""
Ray moved again.
"Michael.""
I spun around.
"What?""
"Think before you act.""
"I am thinking.""
"You have children standing behind you.""
"Exactly.""
He stared at me.
Then his expression changed.
He wasn't afraid of me.
He was afraid of what was behind the wall.
I looked toward the metal filing cabinets.
One of them had been pushed several inches away from the foundation.
I moved it.
Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.
The edges were covered with fresh screws.
Someone had opened it recently.
I grabbed the nearest tool from the desk.
A heavy screwdriver.
"Michael," Vanessa whispered.
"Get back.""
I began removing the screws.
One.
Two.
Three.
The wood shifted.
Behind it was darkness.
Then a tiny hand appeared.
Lily screamed.
Mason stumbled backward.
I grabbed the child's hand.
It was freezing.
"Easy.""
The hand tightened around mine.
"Please don't let go.""
"I won't.""
I pulled.
The opening was narrow.
I removed more boards.
Finally, a small girl crawled through.
She was thin.
Far too thin.
Her hair was tangled.
Her face was pale.
She wore an oversized gray sweatshirt and socks with holes in the toes.
For a second I simply stared.
She looked about thirteen.
Maybe fourteen.
She shielded her eyes from the light.
Then she looked directly at Vanessa.
Her face went white.
"No.""
Vanessa started crying.
"Emma.""
The girl stepped backward.
"No.""
Her voice shook.
"Don't touch me.""
Vanessa dropped to her knees.
"I didn't know you were still alive.""
Emma stared at her.
"You knew.""
"I didn't.""
"You left me.""
The words were barely louder than a whisper.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You knew this child?""
"She was gone.""
Emma shook her head.
"You heard me.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I was afraid.""
"Of Ray?""
Vanessa nodded.
Emma looked toward the stairs.
Ray was gone.
My head snapped around.
"Where did he go?""
Mason pointed upward.
"He ran.""
I immediately pulled out my phone.
"No.""
The call screen showed no service.
Of course.
Basement.
Concrete walls.
I looked at Emma.
"Can you walk?""
She nodded.
I removed my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
Lily came forward slowly.
"Are you Emma?""
The girl looked at her.
"Yes.""
"I'm Lily.""
Emma stared at her for a long moment.
Then she whispered,
"I've heard you crying.""
Lily moved closer to me.
"From where?""
Emma pointed toward the wall.
"From the room.""
My stomach turned.
"You heard Lily?""
"Sometimes.""
"For how long?""
"Months.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Months?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know.""
Emma laughed bitterly.
"You always knew.""
Vanessa covered her face.
I crouched in front of Emma.
"Who kept you here?""
She looked toward the ceiling.
"Ray.""
"Just Ray?""
Emma hesitated.
Then looked at Vanessa.
"She helped him.""
Vanessa flinched.
"Emma...""
"You gave him the keys.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always had a choice.""
The girl said it without anger.
That made it worse.
I stood.
"How did this happen?""
Emma looked at Mason.
"He knows.""
Mason stared at the floor.
"You remember?""
He nodded.
"I was little.""
"Tell me.""
He swallowed.
"Mom told me Emma was sick.""
Emma spoke quietly.
"She lied.""
Mason nodded.
"She said Emma needed to stay downstairs.""
"Why?""
"Because Ray said she was dangerous.""
Emma shook her head.
"I wasn't dangerous.""
"No.""
I looked at Mason.
"What happened after you came downstairs?""
He wiped his eyes.
"Ray was there.""
"Where?""
"In the little room.""
Emma's expression tightened.
"He told me that nobody would believe me.""
I looked at the walls.
The tally marks.
The mattress.
The drawings.
The tiny cup.
The years of silence.
"How long were you down here?""
Emma looked away.
"I don't know.""
"Years?""
She nodded.
"At first I thought it was days.""
Her voice became distant.
"Then I stopped counting.""
I felt sick.
"How did you survive?""
"I found ways.""
"What ways?""
She looked toward a vent.
"Food came through there.""
I followed her gaze.
A vent near the floor.
The same vent that connected to the kitchen.
"Who brought it?""
"Sometimes Vanessa.""
My wife began shaking.
"Sometimes she forgot.""
Emma continued.
"Sometimes Ray brought it.""
"And when nobody brought food?""
"I waited.""
The room became painfully quiet.
Lily began crying.
I pulled her close.
"No more waiting.""
Emma looked at me.
"Is that true?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked unconvinced.
"People always say that.""
"I know.""
"But then they leave.""
"I'm not leaving you.""
She studied my face.
Then asked the question that broke my heart.
"Are you really her father?""
I looked at Lily.
"No.""
Emma looked confused.
"I mean...""
I shook my head.
"I'm Lily's father.""
Then I pointed at Mason.
"That's his dad.""
Emma smiled weakly.
"I know.""
"What do you mean?""
"Ray told me.""
"About me?""
"Yes.""
"What did he tell you?""
She hesitated.
"That you were supposed to be the perfect husband.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"He said Vanessa chose you because you were easy to trust.""
The words hit me hard.
I looked at Vanessa.
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
"Choose me for what?""
Emma didn't answer.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"For what?""
"Michael...""
"For what?""
She began crying again.
"I needed someone who would believe me.""
"Believe you about what?""
"Everything.""
"Even after you lied about the children?""
"I didn't know how to get out.""
I shook my head.
"You could have told me.""
"Would you have believed me?""
I stared at her.
"No.""
The answer came slowly.
"Not after tonight.""
She nodded.
"I knew that.""
I felt a wave of anger.
"So you married me because I trusted you.""
She nodded.
"And moved my daughter into this house.""
Another nod.
"And you used my trust to hide what was happening.""
Her shoulders collapsed.
"I was trying to survive.""
"You made children suffer.""
"I know.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"You don't know.""
Vanessa looked up.
"Because if you knew, you would have stopped years ago.""
Emma suddenly spoke.
"There is more.""
Everyone turned toward her.
"What?""
She pointed to the wall.
"That isn't the only room.""
I followed her finger.
At first I saw nothing.
Then she moved to a section of brick near the corner.
She pressed three bricks in sequence.
Click.
A panel popped outward.
Behind it was another narrow compartment.
Inside were dozens of files.
And photographs.
I grabbed the nearest one.
A younger Vanessa stood in front of the house.
Beside her was Ray.
And another man.
I recognized him instantly.
Daniel.
But the photograph was dated fifteen years earlier.
Before Vanessa and Daniel had married.
All three of them were standing beside Emma.
Emma was smiling.
Alive.
Happy.
Nothing like the girl standing in front of me now.
I flipped the photo over.
There was writing.
*First family meeting.*
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?""
Emma looked at the photograph.
"They were deciding what to do with me.""
Vanessa whispered, "No.""
Emma continued.
"They said I had become a problem.""
I looked at her.
"What did you do?""
"Nothing.""
"What did they say you had done?""
"Refused to keep secrets.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"What secrets?""
Emma's voice became barely audible.
"I saw what happened to another child.""
The room went still.
"What child?""
Emma pointed toward another photograph.
A little boy.
Maybe seven.
Standing beside Ray.
The date was fourteen years old.
"He was here before me.""
I felt sick.
"Where is he now?""
Emma looked at me.
"I don't know.""
"How many children?""
She shook her head.
"Too many.""
I looked through the photographs.
More faces.
Different ages.
Different years.
All photographed in the same house.
Some in the upstairs room.
Some in the basement.
Some beside Vanessa.
Some beside Ray.
I felt like I was drowning.
Then I noticed another file.
The label was recent.
*LILY — FINAL PHASE*
My blood froze.
I opened it.
There were photographs of Lily sleeping.
In her bedroom.
Eating.
Playing.
At the backyard swing.
Walking into school.
Someone had been watching my daughter.
Recent photographs.
Very recent.
My hands started shaking.
The last picture was taken that afternoon.
Lily was standing beside the mailbox.
The photographer had been close.
Very close.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"You watched her.""
"No.""
"You knew someone was following her.""
"No.""
"Then who took these?""
Emma looked at the photographs.
"Ray.""
I looked at the basement stairs.
"He was planning something.""
Emma nodded.
"What?""
She stared at Lily.
"To make her disappear.""
My blood ran cold.
"When?""
"Tonight.""
I looked at the clock on my phone.
7:42 p.m.
My daughter had almost been taken.
While I'd been fighting with Vanessa, someone had been watching.
I grabbed Lily.
"We're leaving.""
Mason nodded.
Emma stayed still.
"You're coming too.""
She looked at me.
"Where?""
"Somewhere safe.""
She shook her head.
"There isn't anywhere safe.""
"There is now.""
I pulled out my phone again.
This time one bar appeared.
I called emergency services.
The connection began ringing.
Then the basement lights went out.
Emma screamed.
A door slammed upstairs.
Mason grabbed my arm.
"He's back.""
I turned.
Something moved at the end of the corridor.
A shadow.
Tall.
Slow.
Coming toward us.
I pushed all three children behind me.
"Stay back.""
The shadow stepped into the weak light from my phone.
It wasn't Ray.
It was Daniel.
He stood at the end of the corridor, breathing hard.
His eyes immediately locked onto Emma.
He froze.
"Emma?""
The girl stared back.
Her lips parted.
"Dad?""
Daniel dropped to his knees.
"No...""
He covered his face.
"Oh God.""
Emma took one trembling step toward him.
Daniel looked up.
Tears filled his eyes.
"I thought you were dead.""
Emma shook her head.
"I waited.""
He stood and rushed toward her.
Then stopped inches away.
As if he was afraid touching her would make her disappear.
"Can I...?""
Emma nodded.
He pulled her into his arms.
She broke down.
For the first time, the thirteen-year-old girl who had survived years behind a wall cried like a little child.
I stood there holding Lily and Mason.
And for one brief moment, the horror in the basement seemed to pause.
Then Daniel looked at me.
His face changed.
"Michael.""
"What?""
His eyes moved to the photographs in my hands.
"Where did you find those?""
"Down here.""
He stared.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He pointed toward the file labeled Lily.
"Vanessa wasn't doing this alone.""
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
Daniel's face went pale.
"I came here tonight because I got another message.""
"From who?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"What did it say?""
He pulled out his phone.
The screen showed a single message.
*They know about Emma. Finish it tonight.*
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"I think Ray wasn't the one giving orders.""
Before anyone could respond, another phone began ringing.
Vanessa's.
She pulled it from her pocket.
The caller ID had no name.
Only one word.
*HOME.*
She answered.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
Cold.
Calm.
Close enough for all of us to hear.
"You found her.""
Vanessa's face went white.
The voice continued.
"Then you know what happens next.""
The line went dead.
May you like
A second later, every door in the basement slammed shut at once.
And somewhere in the darkness, a child began screaming.
